Cairndoodle

Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone has any experience of Cairndoodles they could share?

I’m researching what breeds would be a good fit for our family’s first dog, and they seem to be a good fit for us going off what I’ve read about their usual temperament, exercise requirements, size, and suitability to live with cats and young children.

thanks.

We have a Maltese/Shihtzu mix - nearly 6 yrs old. He's still feisty, but equally cuddly, engaged, lovelable crazy. He came from a farm (as in with cows....not puppy farm!!) and loves other animals too. Remind your kids that a dog is not a toy though - and be prepared for vets/groomer bills. And time and lots of lots of patience when house training them. Don't underestimate the onset of "puppy blues"!

Thanks!
yes I remember an old work colleague got a puppy and initially they were so happy, but once it got a little bit older and started to get a bit more difficult, I remember them being a bit regretful. I know it’s not all cute little fluffy moments and rainbows, which is why I’ve been trying to learn as much as possible over the past year or so.

initially I was looking at older rescue dogs, but my husband mentioned how it might be easier to integrate a puppy with the cats rather than an older dog.

Another Cairn fan here. We got ours when our DC were about the same age as yours and she was the most amazing family member, fitted in perfectly with cats and children. Very sweet natured, loads of personality but iffy recall if something exciting was happening elsewhere. (I'll never forget the day friends came to tea and it took us half an hour to get her back on the lead as she danced around the park with a putrid decaying squirrel corpse in her mouth!). But that's just dogs ...are you sure you want one?

Shouldn't a cairn poodle cross be a canoodle?

I'm reviving an oldish thread here, but I see lots of Cairn fans and I'm at my wits end with mine! She's 7 and we have a shitzu mongrel 3yo. They don't really play together but don't fight.
my children are 12 & 14.

my Cairn has zero recall. I've given up walking her off lead. The big problem is that she constantly wanders. We are her jailers! !My mongrel will walk beside me, play around the garden, cuddle with the children. Even after a really long walk, she would escape if she could, 5 minutes later.

she usually goes to a particular neighbours house, with a family of young children who I suspect feed her. But if they're not home she travels on. She is REALLY difficult to catch. Many of the houses have locked gates and she ignores my call. We have a tracker on her, most of the time.

I'm so fed up of her lack of loyalty. She was once dognapped and we got her back via FB, but if she disappeared now, I wouldn't bother.

had anyone any advice? My home is surrounded with hedging, should we install wire? We tried an electric collar but we would need to replace the cable - which I suspect she dug up!

Can't go wrong with a Labrador - great family dogs and not mixed breed.

Hedging won't contain an escape artist. Ours is reinforced with chicken wire (and ours are not escape artists). It is your responsibility to keep her in: if she caused an accident, you would be liable.

In terms of her loyalty, terriers are independent. But do you play with her? Connect yourself with things she finds exciting, like hunting (under control) or finding items or food hidden in the garden? Make yourself a source of fun, and she might hang around you more.

JudgingJudy · 23/05/2025 12:46

Thanks Edith. I suspect she is a bit bored. I walk her but the DCs don't play with her much any more.
I'm going to look into the chicken wire.

Loved my little cairn 🥰

Newpeep · 23/05/2025 17:51

Terrier specialist here and super fan. Last terrier was high grade at agility and current one has an Obedience title. What training have you done? How do you interact with her? Choice based training is really essential for the independent breeds. They excel at problem solving and are so clever and easily bored!

I suggest you contact a trainer who knows how to motivate terriers and go from there. They’ll only do something if they really really want to…so they need to really really want to 😉

JudgingJudy · 23/05/2025 22:14

Thanks Newpeep - i did training with her as a puppy but I hardly remember it now. I do suspect that she is bored. It has been too hot to walk in the day time recently so she has had a lot of lying about.

My mongrel is more of a lap dog and content to sit under DHs desk as he WFH.

My to do list:
1, Contact trainer
2, Check out intalling chicken wire in back garden.

I was so cross with her yesterday - but she knew it and just kept her head down. We are better today. The trainer is a good idea - the girl was very good the first time. I must see if I can find her number.

Thanks a lot for the tips.

But even if she gets daily long walks - she will still run off at the first chance, She just comes back quickly, or lets herself be caught. She really like to explore. but we live in the suburbs. The roads are busy

JudgingJudy · 23/05/2025 22:38

Appointment booked with trainer for next Wednesday.

Newpeep · 24/05/2025 11:36

This is a lovely game to play with a terrier

Mine will walk all day and not be tired. Games like this on the other hand…

They need to put that terrier brain to use.
