I need dog food suggestions

I am considering cancelling her current dog food subscription. I pay about £65 a month for it, that's my budget. I think she weighs about 1kg. There is often a third missing out of several compartments in each tray, or a lot of gaps and a lot of air where there could be food if that makes sense. I expected full trays. There's also a lot of grain and minimal meat and veg. When I emailed the company they blamed it on the way that the boxes were being stacked in the vans causing food to move from one compartment to another, but I don't think that's true I think there wasn't much food to begin with. I don't feel satisfied with the amount of food and need to top it up with human food out the shop anyway because she isn't getting enough. I'm thinking about lilys kitchen

I changed from Different dog as my pup started to be fussy with it and it was just so expensive, to Millie's wolfheart salmon kibble. He likes it a lot more and his poos have been great as well as his coat from the salmon. I sometimes top it with a wee bit of wet food. It's a lot cheaper than I was paying. Id recommend!

Beautyfadesdumbisforever · 09/01/2025 22:11

How much do you think your dog weighs?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/01/2025 22:21

I agree with @amber763 , we have Millie's wolfheart, I pay £53 for 12kg and it lasts 5 weeks. Their treats and goodies are always well received as well.

Have you thought about raw feeding? My dog loves it, we use paleo ridge. The essentials range is quite reasonable and they often have intro offers on

Beautyfadesdumbisforever · 10/01/2025 07:08

So it’s a teacup size dog or a puppy of a small breed. £65 a month is a ridiculous amount of money for the amount of food a dog of that size would need. Have you looked on the All about dog food website which gives you the nutritional value, cost and ingredients of pretty much all dog foods in an easy to understand % way.
you say you expect full trays are they sending you enough food for your dog. I think a lot of the cost of monthly tailored dog food goes on the convenience rather than the amount of food you actually get. Try the AADF website.

Portabella · 10/01/2025 07:27

I've just changed my dog to Butternut box and what a huge difference in her
Clean bowl at both meals and sleeping all night again.

Newpeep · 10/01/2025 08:40

That is a ridiculous amount of money! My dog is 6.5 Kg and her food costs £30 for 5 Kg (MW) and with a topper of Barking Heads that lasts about 3 months. So £10 a month to feed. A bit over. She is fabulous condition and a really good weight and she absolutely loves it.

NordicwithTeen · 10/01/2025 08:56

I've done the same with ours who was on Butternut. Over Christmas the box came with a load of smaller pouches and I don't think they gave us the right amount in total (was all a bit frantic so didn't weigh etc at the time). I pay the same amount as you for a full month so had cut down to 3 weeks rather than 4. Somehow then the price went up to almost the same as the previous. I left and got a 30% off for a few weeks so using that while I use tins to cover the last week, then doing a subscribe and save on Amazon for tins. If nothing else I'll have my freezer space back and about £40pm back in my account every month.

Tbh I'm getting thoroughly fed up with companies basically setting prices to things, fiddling you then putting the prices up so even if you try to cut back you end up paying the same amount.

CoubousAndTourmalet · 10/01/2025 09:55

That sounds crazy for a dog of that size. Honestly the subscription boxes are a complete rip-off; this is not the first post complaining about half filled trays.

It's costing me roughly the same amount to feed a 45kg puppy on good quality kibble and trays of wet food.

Unless you have a dog with food sensitivities then you are just paying for the convenience. A good quality dry or even wet is so much cheaper and nutritionally balanced. Most top performance and working dogs are fed good quality dry.

NordicwithTeen · 10/01/2025 10:21

Actually I've just remembered last summer we went to the Lido at Saltdean and there was a stand there with free treats to try. Our dog loved them but I stupidly threw away the pot... I think they were based in Sussex... Anyone got any ideas?

Sasskitty · 10/01/2025 10:25

We use Butternut Box. She (our dog) loves it, shiny soft coat, fabulous. I think for a 1Kg dog it wouldn’t be as much as you’re paying now. Our dog is 12Kg and it’s about £65pm.

bunnygeek · 10/01/2025 10:45

I have a PomChi whose about 4kg (if your dog is 1kg she is TINY!) and she is now on Lily's Kitchen and loves it. She is sensitive to chicken so we order anything that doesn't have chicken in it, fortunately there are a few options.

Lily's Kitchen has "everything 25% off" about once a month on their website so we order then usually - and I get the small 150g trays and she has half of one of those in the evening, and some of the senior biscuits in the morning for breakfast.

Floralnomad · 10/01/2025 10:47

1kg is tiny what is she ?

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 10/01/2025 10:53

Do you mean 1kg? Is that even a dog?!

Snowmanscarf · 10/01/2025 11:02

I use Butternut box (and kibble). It costs about £50 per month (plus kibble cost on top)and that’s for a Labrador.

Even with food sensitivities, if you do your research into ingredients it's not that hard to feed even a big dog well for a sensible price. We had one that couldn't tolerate chicken and one that couldn't eat turkey but we found ways around it. It's easy enough to add veg to their food or cook meat yourself to feed alongside a good kibble - we were doing that long before these subscription foods were available.

biscuitsandbooks · 10/01/2025 11:20

1kg? Are you sure? That's the size of an 8 week old kitten Confused

Lovelybitofsquirrel3 · 10/01/2025 12:20

I don’t want to say the brand incase it counts as slander or something like that, I don’t want to get into any trouble. But the food was supposed to make her live longer and is apparently the best one in reality it’s full of grain and minimal veg. The photos looked better. But she would eat it all after previously being very fussy. I thought it would also be better to give her a good diet now to lessen the need for vets in the future.
Yes she’s only a tiny dog, I don’t know her exact weight but I’d say around there. she eats more often throughout the day than other dogs.
I’m thinking about lilys kitchen.

Have a look on all about dog food. Anything that rates above 70% is a good food as a rule. What I feed dry is 75% and wet 86%. My last dog was fed on a variety of food from very bad to very good as she was a very fussy eater and lived to 17 with no vet visits until the very end. Genetics matter more than food.

KhakiShaker · 10/01/2025 12:26

I feed my 27kg shepherd mix Years. It’s great, she loves it. It’s not cheap at 110pm but it’s the highest rated non-raw on AADF. It even smells nice unlike Butternut box 🤢

Consider raw if you haven’t already. It didn’t suit my girl but if it works for your dog then it’s the best thing for them. I used to use Luna and Me which was about 80pm for my girl.

Snippit · 10/01/2025 12:41

My dogs are on Chappie, as advised by a vet. I mix with a little brown bread, I have 3 dogs, 13kilos, 20 kilos and 26 kilos, spend just under £100 a month on their food. I also drizzle a little oil on it and they love it and are doing really well.

I remember my grandparents dogs being on Chappie many years ago, there wasn’t so much choice back then and I do think we’re being guilt tripped into buying all these fancy foods for our pets 🤷‍♀️

Hellohah · 10/01/2025 13:19

£65/month for a 1 kg dog????
I pay £93 for 26 days to feed my 30kg idiot raw.
That is shockingly expensive OP. I'm assuming it's Years because that's the only one I've seen that comes in compartments?

Theoscargoesto · 10/01/2025 13:25

I feed butternut to my two 10k dogs, about 50/50 with good quality kibble (Acana). Butternut is about £60 per month, kibble £70-odd for 11 kg bag. Since changing to butternut I have noticed better coats and the older one needs her anal glands emptying much less often (a true blessing!!).
