I need dog food suggestions

I am considering cancelling her current dog food subscription. I pay about £65 a month for it, that's my budget. I think she weighs about 1kg. There is often a third missing out of several compartments in each tray, or a lot of gaps and a lot of air where there could be food if that makes sense. I expected full trays. There's also a lot of grain and minimal meat and veg. When I emailed the company they blamed it on the way that the boxes were being stacked in the vans causing food to move from one compartment to another, but I don't think that's true I think there wasn't much food to begin with. I don't feel satisfied with the amount of food and need to top it up with human food out the shop anyway because she isn't getting enough. I'm thinking about lilys kitchen

My terrier is a mini yorkie x jack Russell, she’s tiny and weighs 5kg. She’s always been raw fed.

My dogs are on Chappie, as advised by a vet. I mix with a little brown bread, I have 3 dogs, 13kilos, 20 kilos and 26 kilos, spend just under £100 a month on their food. I also drizzle a little oil on it and they love it and are doing really well.

I remember my grandparents dogs being on Chappie many years ago, there wasn’t so much choice back then and I do think we’re being guilt tripped into buying all these fancy foods for our pets 🤷‍♀️

Chappie isn't high enough in protein for a lot of active dogs and extremely high in carbohydrates, which dogs don't need much on. They can also gain weight quite quickly on it. It's not something I would feed routinely HOWEVER it is fantastic for settling down stomachs in dogs in the short term. It doesn't have quite the nutrients they tend to need long term. Dogs need high protein and preferably decent quality protein. My last dog was on it for a while when she came to us as her stomach was a mess. Once it settled down we changed her to something with more protein and she did much better. The best dog is a fed dog but there are some foods better than others no doubt.

Our extra small dog (Pomeranian 2.5kg max) lived to 15 years with no health issues on Royal Canin, as recommended by the breeder...

After spending around £4M on fancy foods and prescription dinners, I found Chappie to be the only food that keeps my dog healthy! Couldn't believe the change in him.

Nothing to do with the food - but I’m struggling to even picture a 1kg dog, my petite cat is just under 3kg

But yeah £65 a month for that size dog is ridiculously expensive - I’m very sure pretty much anything will be cheaper

I did meet a puppy who was just under 1kg, a rescue runt of the litter thought to be Yorkie x Chihuahua and so small she had to wear a kitten harness

Mydoglovescheese · 10/01/2025 15:18

My dog is 8kg and has had Lily's kitchen since she was a puppy. I've never had any problems getting her to eat it. I mix some kibble with a quarter of a tray twice a day. Probably costs about £1 a day.

Have you thought about raw feeding? My dog loves it, we use paleo ridge. The essentials range is quite reasonable and they often have intro offers on

If you are thinking of raw feeding, please talk it through with your vet first. Not all vets are advocates of raw feeding.

I've decided on scrumbles

Actually, I live in tmainland UK, and they want me to pay £20 for 'further afield shipping' on a recurring payment. No chance

I've just changed my dog to Butternut box and what a huge difference in her
Clean bowl at both meals and sleeping all night again.

My dog is on Butternut too, and doing very well on it.

I used this site to help narrow down my choices.
https://www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk/

Is your dog still a puppy? Why don't you know their weight? If a puppy, the vet weighs it at each set of vaccines and records it on their medical card, and when older, for annual medical checks.

If my dog was only 1kg, I'd weight it in a bowl on the kitchen scales!
Even a small chihuahua is at least 2kg, so too would love to know what secretive breed this is?

Yes, I've even gone for the organic version and it's still cheaper. And I'm sure there wont be half empty trays

No but they will try and sell you purina 🤢

That's not my experience.

Receiving the amount of food that you've paid for sounds like a good start Wink

HaagenYAAS · 11/01/2025 20:03

I really want to know what breed of dog you have- 1kg is absolutely tiny - my cat weighs 5 x that!

Yeah I used to have a DCat that weighed over 6 kilos. I can't visualise a 1 kilo DDog at all Wink

Two of our Maine Coon boys were over 10kg. I cannot visualise a 1kg dog either.

Our moggy boy was over 8kg before we put him on a diet - even our smallest cat is about 3kg.

A 1kg dog is ridiculously small.

Lovelybitofsquirrel3 · 11/01/2025 20:36

I don't really think of her as a dog I think she's more cat like than dog like even though she is a dog. She doesn't need to be taken for walks and is a lap dog
