Hello my fabulous Podsquad, here is Podcast Thread III.

For anyone that is new to this thread, it's about my rescue dog, known as Pod.

Here is thread No. 2 https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/the_doghouse/5197068-the-pod-cast?page=39&reply=141216881

And thread No 1 https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/the_doghouse/5177112-oh-my-giddy-god?page=1

for if anyone would like to go back and see how astonishingly naïve and traumatised I was by taking on a fully grown, teenaged pointy dog who seemed determined to destroy me and everything I love.

Theatrics over, here is the Pod in question (obviously I've edited the lead out - I'm not mental).

If anyone doesn't have is Insta handle and wants it, just DM me. A video of me and Pod doing yoga together will appear at some point soon.

@mydogisthebest Like talent shows and singing shows? The contestants almost always have a sad story. Can’t they just be talented and great at what they do? Celebrate talent instead of vying for sympathy votes.

Even The Repair Shop is now just full of sob stories. I have stopped watching it. I get upset and cry so easily and do not want to get upset watching tv shows

I have been cheating on Pod today, had to wait to collect my son at one of the most popular dog walking spots in the city, sat and admired what must have been 100s of dogs and got to stroke a 12 week old pomski who was out doing some socialising 😭 I could have stolen him

You haven't actually got him in your coat pocket have you @Techno56 ?

I would absolutely watch this. @WiddlinDiddlin I think you should front it.

Oh dear lordy no, I've a face for radio... and a voice strictly for books!

I wish I did, we are still thinking about him now 🐕🐕🐕

I'm sure other adolescent dog owners will understand this.... Some days he's so lovely and chill and nice... And other days, like today, I don't seem to do ANYTHING other than firefight one shitty behaviour after another.

The past 48 hours he's been about as likeable as Elon Musk. We seem to get stuck in this Shout to go out, immediately shout outside, be brought in, go into one room, shout, go into another room, shout. It's been two days of CONSTANT barking and it's making me want to run face first at a wall just to get some quiet. He'll be distracted from it for tricks and treats but I can't do that all effing day.

Arrrrgh fuck and damn and bollocks.

Ahhhh sorry it's soooo shite right now 😢

Is he allowed out on walks yet? No ideas for helping (other brain games?)

Pod - listen mate, stop being a knob. It's not big and it's not clever. Let your mum have some peace (or at least appreciate ALL that she has done/does for you)

HangingOver · 02/02/2025 19:30

I honestly have a new respect for parents I truly truly do. The constant need to cheerfully produce engagement and novelty ALL DAY is exhausting. I least I can call Pod a giant prick to his face without going to jail.

Oh Pod. He doesn't know how lucky he is.

Feel free to come here and vent when he's being too Poddy.

HangingOver · 02/02/2025 19:45

I'm trying to get him to at least get through a meal without shouting by keeping a little tin of treats on the table, telling him to go on his bed and firing one at him at intervals to keep him on there

OP posts:
WiddlinDiddlin · 02/02/2025 21:39

The demanding that you make the world 'just so' for them is strong at this point, despite being recently de-nutted, his hormones are making him do this and much of the time he might not even have a clue why.

Firing treats at his bed is a fabulous tactic fulfilling his need to mooch food (it is a need, its how dogs go from 'mum doesn't vomit food for us any more' to 'can find my own food all by myself'... a LONG period of mooching it, begging it, nicking it, grovelling for it, being cheeky and outright dreadful in varying measure) and avoiding triggering his 'I need to have food while you have food or im missing out AND MAY DIE OF THIS IMMINENTLY' button.

If you imagine what would happen to a wild canid if they just.. lay around quietly whilst others ate... didn't go to see where the others went... ignored food just lying around... it does make more sense.

It doesn't make it any less face-smashingly irritating to live with... sorry!

HangingOver · 02/02/2025 22:00

Thanks Widdlin.

He's not actually a begger usually which is fantastic, he normally has one food sniff and then turns into a prawn on his bed but the last two days he's just stood in the middle of the kitchen going "WAAAAAH!!!!!!" for the whole meal 😂 God I am exhausted. I hope he goes back to his version of normal soon. Work tomorrow will be interesting. Blood shouty Kenneth.

I'm also trialling a lullaby... It's goes "Be a prawny.. Be a prawny .. be a tiny Poddy Prawn..." to the tune of the Christmas carol "infant holy". It doesn't actually work at getting him to sleep but he seems to like it.

OP posts:
spiderlight · 02/02/2025 22:13

I love that he has a lullaby. Ours has a sea shanty, which is called 'What shall we do with the noisy Daisy?'

sydsmum · 02/02/2025 22:33

I too was in your position with my boy, trying everything to entertain him and exhaust him at the same time. For the first year of rescuing him I considered my life destroyed and wanted the old life back. But I loved him so much there was no going back. Hiding chunks of cheese around the house for him to find was helpful along with 3 long walks a day. He turned out to be the best thing that had ever happened to me in my life. Hang on in there it gets easier x

Thank you I found this extremely comforting to read, except for the year part 😂

Pods been less shouty today, he had two nice-ish walks and lots of snoozing in the sun.

I had quite a serious talk with him at 3am this morning when his bad dreams or farts woke him up and he borked. I went down in the dark and whispered to him that I love him very very much and will give him everything he needs. And what he needed in that moment was to rub his face all over mine. Sounds disgusting but it was really very sweet.

Aww, Hanging! I'm no hound psychologist but that sounds like Pod saying " back atcha, mum 😍"

He's such a sweet boy 😊

HangingOver · 03/02/2025 20:19

Arggggggh. He's is now pretty much barking when he is awake. Kill me.

Huge sympathy. It must be almost unbearable.

Lurcher girl has just silently scoffed four salmon fillets I had cooked and left to cool, well out of her reach, I thought. You'd think I'd have learned by now, in five and a half years.🙄

HangingOver · 03/02/2025 20:57

It is unbearable. Wits end stuff. I'm seeing vet and trainer Wednesday so I'll mention it to both. He's just YELLING AT NOTHING.

OP posts:
2025willbemytime · 03/02/2025 21:14

He's not. He's yelling at you but you've not translated yet.

Poor Pod. He's so confused.

Is Mr Hanging willing to take Pod for a short walk to save your sanity?

I really feel for you, sometimes I just wish I understood dog arsehole k9 language!

A reaction to losing his "bits" maybe?🤔

I think it must be. It's like being back at day one. All night he's been around paced the house barking and whining, ripping everything up, biting and humping me, wanting to go out every five minutes. He's so agitated, it's like he's a different dog to last week. He just ran at me and nipped my leg hard out of absolutely nowhere. Poor DP had his head in his hands just now and he's bulletproof. Gyargh 😥 I think I'll ring the vet tomorrow and see if we can bring his checkup forward just in case there's any physical explanation but he's eating drinking and pooping normally. Hate seeing Pod so stressed and angry.
