Took my dog to the groomers..

Before and after pictures added. I can't take him seriously anymore! Lol

But the real issue is he's so cold, nonstop shaking and he's started peeing in the house, I've put his coat on for the garden but he just wants to come inside. Then he pees and poos. Any advice?

Has he been to the groomers before?

The shaking mighr be that he is traumatised.

WickedlyCharmed · 05/12/2024 14:46

Is he groomed regularly? He must have been terribly matted for the groomers to have shorn him like that.

Go and get him a jumper, poor wee fella.

123456tsh · 05/12/2024 14:51

No it was his first time, not matted, I said I wanted more manageable and left her too it. He's wearing his coat at the minute. Do you think he's just peeing inside because he's cold outside?

Was he mistreated at the groomers

Gettingbysomehow · 05/12/2024 14:55

Oh poor little thing, he must feel naked bless him. White dog and navy sofa though, why is it not covered in fur? My white cat sheds everywhere.

123456tsh · 05/12/2024 14:55

@crumblingschools not as fair as I'm aware. I left him with her, it's a little set up in her house.

Did the groomer say how your dog behaved when there? Have you used clippers on the dog before?

WickedlyCharmed · 05/12/2024 14:58

Is she new to grooming? A decent groomer will usually offer a puppy bath and trim for the first few times, to ease them into it.

That’s a terrible cut if he wasn’t matted! He’s been clippered on his first groom. He’s probably traumatised.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 05/12/2024 15:03

He's shaking and peeing indoors because he is stressed. From his point of view he was whisked away (believing he was going on a lovely walk) and then someone clamped him down and shaved him. It's going to take him a while to come to terms with. A bath and claw trim would have been a better 'starter visit' for poor pooch.

He'll get over it. Lots of cuddles and treats and his coat will soon grow back. Keep a coat on him if he needs it for outside, but maybe a bit of jollying him up might help, if you're doting on him too much. Take him somewhere he loves (with his coat on) and give him some fun.

And maybe next time tell the groomer to just tiddle about with the outside bits, until he's got his confidence back.

123456tsh · 05/12/2024 15:06

@crumblingschools when I asked she said he was wingly. I've used clippers on his face quite a few times and he was fine. Hes bathed and dried with the hairdryer often.

@WickedlyCharmed I was surprised too, I didn't think you clipped there fur till they are over one, he's only just about 6 months. He had a lot of fur as you can see from his before photo but was washed and brushed. It's a very wonky cut

He's probably bloody cold. It's winter. The groomer has given him a severe cut not a tidy up to make it more manageable. Get used to putting a coat on him every time he goes out for a few months. Save a cut like that for the summertime.

Mummyoflittledragon · 05/12/2024 15:27

My younger dog had a puppy groom the first time. My older dog didn’t as the groomer I used to use didn’t offer this to me and I’d never heard of it. I’d just put your dog’s coat on him all the time until he settles. The shaking may not be cold as others have said.

Lots of cuddles and take him outside, let him be a bit Velcro atm. He won’t need to be groomed again for a while, which is a bonus. I’d book somewhere else now for after Christmas, If you can go to a salon and meet the person beforehand that would be good. Then get a puppy groomer to acclimatise him.

coffeesaveslives · 05/12/2024 15:32

If you have a dog who will need to be groomed one day, you should really start taking them to the salon from about 12 weeks of age so they can get used to the whole experience of being away from you, being handled, washed, brushed etc.

Unfortunately if you've never taken him before and then left him to get a full groom, he's probably a bit traumatised and freaked out by the whole thing. He should settle in a few days but next time, you need to take him to a groomer who will acclimatise him properly and get him used to everything bit by bit.

Look up "Doggy Styling" on TikTok - they have some great examples of what a puppy groom should look like.

@coffeesaveslives we haven't had him very long as the previous owners
Had to re-home him, but I got him booked in soon as I could.

I feel bad for the poor little fella, she's tried to give him a poodle cut and he just looks like a posh rat lol

If she's clipped him like that and he genuinely wasn't matted and is only 6 months, then I would never return to her and be warning others off that business. is she properly qualified?

I agree.

My 9 year old looks similar to this right now - and he just had a major operation!

123456tsh · 05/12/2024 16:01

@MarnieRey yeah I don't think we'll be returning, she had great reviews, but the only groomers who had appointments so she can't be that busy.

I think you had good intentions but leaving a brand new rescue dog with a total stranger for a full groom probably wasn't a very good idea, really. He must have been really scared.

However, he looks absolutely fine with his new cut - it'll be much more manageable in the muddy months anyway, so I would just see it as a lesson learned. It's unlikely he's really going to be traumatised - just give him a few days to adjust.

Sidebeforeself · 05/12/2024 16:19

I take it you wont be going back to the same groomer?

Sidebeforeself · 05/12/2024 16:19

Sorry x post!

IlovePond · 05/12/2024 16:44

@123456tsh - as other people have said - a woolly coat might help him feel better. Aldi have some very cheap and adorable ones in for Xmas, so you could get a couple to try, if he’s amenable. I’d put a thinner coat on in the house too, as he might be cold as well as stressed.

If he’s still like this tomorrow, I would call your vet for advice. Ours are pretty good over the phone. It’s possible he has picked up some infection as well as/instead of being stressed.

Once you’ve ruled out any physical cause for the ‘accidents’, then you might have to accept a little while of re-toilet training.

If you are happy letting people know - roughly- where you are based, perhaps some people would be able to recommend good local groomers for the future. Alternatively, some home groomers will come to you, which is less stressful for a potentially nervous dog.

One of those cuddle baskets/blankets for him to snuggle into might cheer him up a bit and make him feel more secure. Alternately, if you have an old Oodie or something similar you could let him lie on, that would probably help too. (My DDog cuddles up to me in my Oodie when he’s feeling tired/stressed/if he sees the hoover!)

I hope he’s better soon.

NotYourSaviour · 05/12/2024 16:49

Oh poor little thing, yes he's just had a bit of a fright...he's not necessarily cold but his whole body will feel different and alien to him, on top of his first full grooming experience!

But he'll be okay, he'll acclimatise and bounce back. I own a breed that needs regular maintenance, it's easier for them to go every 6 weeks or so for bathing, detangling, trimming etc without the dog getting too much of a shock with a heavy cut.

Keep him quiet and comfortable, let him decompress and he'll get over it. But I would suggest a different groomer next time, she got a bit scissor happy there. Go onto your local Facebook page and search for nearby word of mouth recommendations, that's what I do.

VegTrug · 05/12/2024 17:23

Poor thing. You need to get him a sweater and never use that groomer again!

VegTrug · 05/12/2024 17:27

When our schnauzer was ill with cancer, he was shaking a lot and the vet said “lots of people decide that there must be other reasons behind it but 99/100 it really is because they’re cold! Especially dogs with short fur or right after a groom. You see owners walking their short haired Jack Russell in the middle of winter with no coat on and then claim the dog’s shaking is nerves or something! It’s baffling!” 🤯

Newpeep · 05/12/2024 17:31

Poor chap. He sounds traumatised. I hand strip my dog myself now but the groomer we used to use would offer a ‘puppy session’ first which was just a bit of stripping and lots of treats with you there before they went in for the real thing and even then it was shorter the first time. Stripping is pulling dead hair so quite time consuming. My dog always came back full of beans so we knew she wasn’t stressed.

You are going to need to do some behavioural work before he goes again. Or do it yourself. Tbh the quality of that it would be better to DIY! It’s not hard.
