@tizwozliz
Oh how annoying! You seem to be having a nightmare with this spay; I know you've already had to reschedule it because of her hormone levels. Fingers crossed that when you rebook it'll be third time lucky...

YorkshireFelix · 01/12/2024 12:29

How is everyone doing? I hope you are feeling a bit brighter @CaptainBeanThief, I have been thinking about you.

I am full of cold. Absolutely gutted as I feel horrendous and only just started feeling normal after my bout of Covid. Poor V didn't get walked yesterday and I feel so bad, and not sure I'll make it out today either. I'll try and take him on a walk around the block this afternoon maybe.

He was an angel for me yesterday, and enjoyed his Pooch & Mutt advent calendar this morning 😄

Here he is partaking favourite pastime - watching birds out of the window.

Oh, how crap @YorkshireFelix getting a cold straight on the back of Covid. I hope it doesn't linger.

Yes, @CaptainBeanThief is in my thoughts too and I hope lovely @Bupster is feeling better after her recent bout of lurgy. Ooh, very curious about the advent calendar now....🤔Just ordered a bag of kibble and a new collar for Brie's Christmas, but I don't think I'll bother gift wrapping a 12kg kibble bag 😆

Beautiful Vinny looks deep in thought here, as usual ❤I'm sure he'd get along with Brie, despite the size discrepancy, she is quite a philosophical sort too.

brushingboots · 01/12/2024 13:48

Oh no, poor you @YorkshireFelix, that’s rotten. Someone should invent some kind of dog-teleporting system so we can send our pups to people when we can’t get out. We went on a proper ramble this morning somewhere we can’t usually walk offlead because of cows and did some hunting, and she was on top form. I am always amazed at how bold she is – she never hesitates and it is so wonderful to watch. Now on the sofa under the heated blanket for the foreseeable, doing work, with pupsy lying as close to my face as possible.

Sending love also to @CaptainBeanThief and Milo <3

YorkshireFelix · 01/12/2024 13:58

Thank you @PyreneanAubrie. Dd is desperate to buy V loads of gifts but he's already got so much stuff so I think a new toy and a chew will suffice!! I am terrible for spending on him since it's dd (and mine) lifelong dream to have a dog. He's so spoilt!!

@brushingboots that sounds like a gorgeous morning. I hope you've got the lovely sunshine we have got up here too. Pupsy is a superstar ⭐️

My spoilt doggos have not one but two advent calendars each!

Our girl is suddenly, over the last week or so, refusing to get in the car and we have no idea why. She's completely phobic; just now she was sitting cringing beside the hedge in the driveway and wouldn't move towards the car. We can't fathom it. She hasn't been to the vets, we never leave her anywhere, all her car trips have been to nice quiet places for a lovely walk. We don't go far so it's not a travel sickness issue, but now she just won't go near the car. She seems to be terrified. We've tried bribery; treats of different types but today it totally failed.

She's had a walk locally, seems fine, doesn't appear to be in pain or moving awkwardly. It's just baffling. It's going to have a massive impact, because it's not as if we can just pick her up and plunk her in the boot if she sits down and refuses to move. It's an Octavia Estate with a dog guard so she has plenty of space, it's not as if she's crated. All our others would happily jump in and out of the cars. We're never strict or shouty at her, we always try to make walks something fun and exciting. I have no idea what's gone wrong...😥

brushingboots · 01/12/2024 17:04

@PyreneanAubrie is it too late for a secondary fear phase?

Bupster · 01/12/2024 17:18

Oh @PyreneanAubrie I do hope it's temporary! Bill has always hated the car and it made me so anxious that we barely went anywhere, and I'm sure my anxiety was rubbing off on him. It really shrank our world, and even now that he's getting marginally better I'm still an absolute wuss about pushing it, so we don't go anywhere yet.

But @brushingboots might have a point - mad dislikes of things for no apparent reason often seem to be secondary fear; and perhaps it'll go away if you let her get over it in her own time? Not that you have a choice given her size! Maybe just walk her near the hedge and give her a fuss then walk away, try to get her a little bit nearer? Is she being funny about other similar cars that you've passed on your walk?

MarketThyme · 01/12/2024 17:59

@pyreneanaubrie you've mentioned Brie doesn't want to let you out of her sight or purview. Could you try having you and family get in to car and sitting there for a couple of minutes (otherwise ignoring her) and seeing if she follows? If you have a dog safe place to park car great, if not could you tie her lead to something in the car to ensure she's safe while you and family sit in car on driveway?

PyreneanAubrie · 01/12/2024 19:23

@brushingboots
We thought she was in a secondary fear period 5 or 6 weeks ago, she suddenly became bothered by motorbikes, tractors, trucks when she hadn't been before. It stretched into early November and she was really bothered by fireworks, but it seemed to have passed. A local events venue had a big firework display two nights ago and she wasn't fussed.

@Bupster
I knew you'd had issues with Bill not liking the car ad it's partly why I decided to post about Brie. It's odd because she's been okay until the last week or so. Yesterday's drive up to the moor took a few bribes of treats being chucked into the boot of the car but today it was a flat out refusal. No, she's not bothered about walking past other cars, just ours and only when the tailgate is open. We did try getting her in the car via the back door, onto the seat but she refused that also.

@MarketThyme
Funnily enough, my chap suggested similar. He wonders if I should go and sit in the car boot tomorrow with some tempting treats (basically with Brie that means a bag of cheese chunks) before he brings her out of the back gate. Unfortunately our driveway is not gated so we can't just let her run to the car off-lead. We'll see how she reacts to me being in that space and just sitting... not actually drive anywhere, just be in the car. I suspect she'll still be weird about it.

We'll have to try to figure it out, I might ask the trainer for his thoughts on Tuesday. I don't like her being anxious but we also need to rule out anything physical as she's such a hefty girl. We always give her a leg up to get into the car and also make sure she doesn't leap straight out. Hopefully it will pass before she gets any bigger.

Bupster · 01/12/2024 21:00

Poor spooky pup - and poor you too, I know you absolutely love getting her out onto the moors. Please do keep us updated @PyreneanAubrie . I'll let you know how my horror is getting on too - work should be a bit less bonkers soon and I might be able to take him in the car to places other than daycare...

tizwozliz · 01/12/2024 21:10

I forget how old Brie is, could a season be on the horizon? Might account for some change in behaviour, especially the clinginess

Thanks! You could be right, that would probably explain her being a bit "off"- it actually hadn't entered my head but it does make sense. She's just turned 8 months old and it's so long since we last had a girl (previous two pups both male) that neither of us can remember at what age our other girls first came into season. If it's anything like with humans, where weight can seemingly be a factor, then it could be anytime soon. I'll keep an eye on her and let yo know but it's probably a good call.

PyreneanAubrie · 01/12/2024 21:36

@Bupster - I really hope you can start getting Bill a bit further afield soon. You are incredibly patient so I'll take a leaf from your book; we'll just take it gently and not force the issue for now.

I do think there's a possibility that @tizwozliz may have just hit the nail on the head and first season is imminent. We shall see...

Edit to add: on weekdays we generally walk locally from the house, but at weekends we tend to drive up to the moors as it's quieter. We live in quite a touristy village.

YorkshireFelix · 01/12/2024 22:11

That is a really good point re season. I'd have never considered that! Hopefully the change in behaviour doesn't last long. As you said, it's not like you can just grab her and pop her in the car regardless!

Very good shout @tizwozliz! Might just be a season coming for Brie.

I've got a very clingy pup here tonight but she's been done so no chance of it being hormones, just needs her mum I think, which is fine by me. She does insist on lying across my laptop keyboard though which is no use when I'm trying to write.

brushingboots · 01/12/2024 22:40

We have so many places to go in the car @Bupster! So many places for pupsy to lead Bill into (responsible) temptation...

I've sent many accidental teams messages at work because Vinny loves laying across my keyboard. He must be touching me at all times 😂

❤Well that was interesting. The Puppy Blues lasted about 3 days last week and for those three days I had the wrong dog, but now I'm back to being smitten ❤How can something so big be so damn cute? Don't you want to pick her up and kiss her little fluffy head?

@PyreneanAubrie that's so nice to hear! Have you made any progress with the random car fear?

brushingboots · 02/12/2024 20:13

I thought you'd all like to know that I have maintained my status as Bog Lady General, since tonight, out walking in the pitch black, I not only slipped down a hill but down a hill into a bog. I am so tired of dark, dark walks. Only five (??) more months to go!!!

Well she just had two walks from home today but my chap made a point of stopping to open the car boot and she wasn't fussed, although he/we made no attempt to get her in... I'll update as and when we do try to take her for a car ride, but she is walking past the car fine and not bothered by cars, vans, people out and about. So, yesterday's extreme reaction is currently a mystery.

We have dog training man again tomorrow, so I might mention the car issue to him and get his thoughts. I had an okay walk with her this afternoon. I am flatly refusing the trainer's headcollar suggestion because I hate seeing a thing around her muzzle. I had her back on the harness, collar double-ended lead combo as I feel it's more secure.

Indeed. You most definitely are our resident Bog Lady now, sounds quite hazardous where you are, particularly so after dark... 😨

YorkshireFelix · 02/12/2024 20:47

@brushingboots what's with all the bogs. You must live in bog city 🤣
