I can't actually believe I'm finally typing this... I think I'm getting a dog!

I've wanted one of my own my entire life. I had one growing up and look after friends and neighbours at every available opportunity as I adore dogs so much. A rescue came up locally and I thought he looked lovely, he was snapped up immediately, but came up again yesterday! Me and DP are meeting him this afternoon.

Any tips for meeting a rescue for the first time? Other than being gentle and calm? He's 8 months so a bouncy chap.

ARGGGH! So excited. 😁

This threads just been amazing, proper cheared me up, everytimeI pop back on , love the pics of him, he looks so sad ha, can't wait for the day he's properly settled and relax and happy, which because of all your love and patience with him won't be long. He's gonna be adorable one day.

HangingOver · 17/10/2024 17:17

RescuePod has been ridiculously good today. He's on his third long nap of the day and has been just so so much calmer.

In fact he's slept so much I'm almost worried haha

Eating, pooping, drinking etc. though. Would you be worried or is he just finally relaxing enough to nap?

I might be a PFB parent and text the trainer...

I've had 3 rescue dogs of different breeds. It's always chaos for at least a few months. Sometimes a lot longer, depending on what they've been through.

Enjoy the sleep. If he's eating drinking and pooping, just be happy for the peace. It'll be temporary 😂

sonjadog · 17/10/2024 17:26

He may well just be relaxing. His whole life has been turned upside down and he doesn't know why. It's about three weeks since you got him, right?

WiddlinDiddlin · 17/10/2024 20:43

Sounds like he's just realised he can let go.. and so has... flomp!

GeminiGiggles · 17/10/2024 20:51

Yay for naps! My collie was a nightmare when over tired and suffered from FOMO so bad 🤣 you've reminded me I used to have to pretend to nap so he would nap. Then when he snored I could doom scroll in peace 😆

With the destroying things would one of those suction tug toy things work?

The Tragic Ears are so sad poor boy! I love how expressive the ears are ❤️

One tiny bit of advice - give up trying to listen to podcasts on a walk. It's better to be fully present. Good luck with him, he's fab. And he is sleeping at 3 weeks with relief that he's not getting kicked out again.

I've been thinking the same. IT's a bit soon to go on autopilot during the walks. He deserves full attention and probably can sense that you are distracted. He needs all of your focus at this point.

Glad to hear he is sleeping soundly and feeling more secure.

HangingOver · 17/10/2024 21:46

He does get my attention, that's why I don't end up hearing a word of it 🤣 I have to listen again when he's asleep

Oh I forgot to say, he had his first trip in my car today! Just a two minute drive to his favourite grassy patch. We've been building up to it with loads of treats. He's got to go to the vet soon to get weighed for his next wormer and flea and getting some advice about getting some more weight on him. Luckily the vet is ten mins away by car.

My rescue dog was absolutely mad for the first 3 weeks then miraculously calmed down and suddenly seemed to understand house rules, so fingers crossed for you.

Thank you. In the last day and a half he's suddenly started to want to take long naps. No signs of illness so I think he might be relaxing enough to let himself sleep 💤

He still has manically insane periods but they're starting to feel more contained if that makes sense. Like they last about 20 minutes of manic high energy with some destructiveness but he'll eventually be soothed by commands, tuggy and sniffing for treats. Sniffing in particular does seem to reset him. Or he sometimes does ten laps of the garden to let off steam 🤣

Oh the pupdates are flowing today... Trainer is coming to our house on Monday to see the space and go for a short walk with us in order to make suggestions. Hurrah!

FeralWoman · 18/10/2024 11:59

I love that his camera is named PodWatch!

I hope that the trainer is able to help you and Pod.

GeminiGiggles · 18/10/2024 13:29

I'll be honest I didn't look at it too much just remembered seeing an advert for one!

Cant wait to hear how it goes on Monday - love seeing Pod updates 😍

Re vets I wouldn't do any preventative flea treatments, can cause major health complications.

Re vets I wouldn't do any preventative flea treatments, can cause major health complications.

The woman we bought our house from seemed to have been of the same opinion. We moved in and the place was so overrun with fleas that it took two visits from pest control to get rid of them. One of our poor cats was so badly infested (despite preventative flea treatment) that she became anaemic. ‘Severe health complications’ from preventative flea and wormers are quite rare, definitely more so than complications from a flea infestation.

WiddlinDiddlin · 18/10/2024 19:51

It is possible to not do preventative flea treatment on the dog... and yet still apply it to the house every six/twelve months, and then treat the dog as and when necessary... This can be better for dogs (particularly those who react badly to certain flea treatments!).

Sounds like your houses previous owner failed on that front too @hereismydog

It was beyond awful, I cried every day for weeks until they’d gone! Absolutely soul-destroying.

We have a husky op. Ddog toys used to last maximum of about 15 seconds.. Nerf (the maker of dc guns!) make quite robust ddoggy toys. Very robust in fact. Sold at your regular Pet shop....
