Any recommendations please?
Even chicken has got boring. The obvious ones like wagg or pets at home etc seem to upset his tummy.

Ours loved cocktail sausages cut up small. Any left over meat. Or blue cheese, the stinkier the better....

DataPup · 08/07/2024 11:28

JR Pate

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 08/07/2024 11:29

Pâté (the ones that come in sausage casings for dogs) we have some fish ones that absolutely honk 🤢 mine are obsessed

madrush · 08/07/2024 11:29

Primula cheese tubes always worked for us!

longdistanceclaraclara · 08/07/2024 11:39

Frankfurters

BrodiePup · 08/07/2024 11:42

Thanks 🙂
The sausage people use, are they the tinned ones?

JR stuff. They have pate but they also have sticks of different meats like kangaroo. There’s also a soft stinky stick with a wolf on it that our dogs loved, I’ll try to find it.

ETA - This!

tizwozliz · 08/07/2024 11:51

The good thing about JR Pate is it's technically a complete food, so other than adjusting their food you don't have to worry about overdoing it with the treats. Helpful in the puppy phase when you want to treat all good behaviour and you have a dog that doesn't consider their normal food a reward.

fieldsofbutterflies · 08/07/2024 11:58

Tesco cocktail sausages
Grated cheese
Pooch & Mutt treats

All go down a storm with my dog walking dogs. Also Harringtons low-fat kibble for some bizarre reason, they all love it!

Frankfurters

Plus one for frankfurters and smelly cheese. I find just differing them is sufficient.

Also, dogs work on gambling theory so you don't have to give the high value treats every time. As long as the dog knows you have them, and they come around every so often, it is likely to come back / do what is required in case one of the high value treats is forthcoming.

SirChenjins · 08/07/2024 12:02

Small cubes of cheese, hot dog sausages cut up (you can freeze them and defrost as needed), JR pate or Paddock Farm pate (I prefer this one as it’s drier so you can put it straight in your pocket). Both should be cut into tiny pieces and can be given frozen or defrosted. I second not giving them on every occasion, and I also give extra if he’s done something really challenging for him to recognise his hard work. Throwing a handful on the floor if he’s anxious about something can help to distract and relax him as he sniffs them out too.

Thank you for your replies 😊

M&S 'Treat Time' deli dried sausages, cut into tiny tiny pieces. They are like crack for our dog - she'll do anything for them!

muddyford · 08/07/2024 15:17

Cheddar cut into quarter inch cubes (this is for a Lab). I have cat food pouches for superduper rewards, cut the corner off and squeeze into their mouths. Primula cheese too.

Killingoffmyflowersonebyone · 08/07/2024 17:01

Roast beef.

get a discounted joint and cook it up. Then cut it into 1 inch cubes. Takes ages but a 2KG joint lasts me about a month!

CoffeandTiaMaria · 08/07/2024 17:05

I dehydrate ox or pig liver - it keeps ages in the fridge or freezer and is completely irresistible to my dog and others!

I freeze it before dehydrating to make it easier to slice thinly (defrost for about 45 minutes), 500gms costs about £1.25 so very cheap.

EdithStourton · 08/07/2024 18:16

Cheese - Parmesan rinds a top fave
Dried sprats

And for some dogs, praise and play. Though play isn't always convenient when doing lead work on a pavement...

D1ngledanglers · 08/07/2024 18:27

You can increase the value of a treat through delivery - chasing or catching. Or could you swap in a dog toy such as a game of tug for recall?

tabulahrasa · 08/07/2024 18:55

It also depends on the dog what they find high value

one of my current ones isn’t interested in actual chicken, but offer him a chicken fridge raider… 😐

but…

liver cake is often pretty popular, I literally just google a recipe every time - cheap as well.

primula cheese some dogs look at you like you’re insane, others react like it’s addictive 🤷‍♀️

smoked sausage is good for making other things smell as well - which is a positive for dogs

beardediris · 08/07/2024 22:18

Baked liver it’s transformed my dogs recall and now my friends dogs also will come to me in preference to their owners!
It’s cheap to buy I think I pay £2.50 for a box and it lasts me about 10-14 days depending on how many friends and their dogs I walk with. The only downside is it stinks the house out whilst you cook it!

SirChenjins · 09/07/2024 06:38

@beardediris How do you cook the liver?

beardediris · 09/07/2024 20:19

I bake it in the oven on 140 for about 1 3/4 hours and the cut it into small bits. I keep it in the fridge for us too 2 weeks. Personally I loathe liver including the smell when it’s cooking but it’s bloody amazing for recall.

SirChenjins · 09/07/2024 20:52

Brilliant, thanks 😊
