Puppy problem's

Help!

We have an 8 month old puppy who is house trained to the point of will be dry when we are home, asks to go out. And dry over night.

However when we go out will not hold on and will wee on the floor! They are usually fairly big puddles so I'm going to assume it's because he needs to go?

We never had this issue with my other dog. Putting him in a crate isn't and option, and paying someone to let them out each day is extortionate. Has anyone got any hints or tips to stop him? It's causing arguments in the house

How long are you leaving him at home for?

Notsoflirtythirty · 18/06/2024 06:39

6 hour's whilst I'm at work. So not that long, amd considering he's dry overnight I'm wondering if its now just a bad habit.

I'm off for 6 weeks in the summer so hopefully I'll be able to get so training done then if needed, I'm just at a loss as to whay to do

Well the problem is obvious surely. He's still quite a young dog being left for 6 hours a day with no loo breaks or company...

Cadela · 18/06/2024 06:44

Yeah you can’t leave a puppy for 6 hours. You need to hire a dog walker to break up that time so he can be let out to toilet.

Surely you know this already? Amazed you even had to ask.

Levriers · 18/06/2024 06:45

Six hours ?! FFS 🤦🏻‍♀️

cryinglaughing · 18/06/2024 06:46

Does he go out for a good, long walk before you go to work? Sometimes just letting them out in the garden isn't good enough, they need a walk to get everything moving and empty.

I do think 6 hours is too long to leave an 8 month old 😞 though.

DracoDormiensNumquamTittilandum · 18/06/2024 06:47

I don't leave my dog for 6 hours and he's a middle aged man. It's too long. You shouldn't have got a puppy if you didn't budget for daycare. Find a way to make it work. Cut back something else.

Willmafrockfit · 18/06/2024 06:48

4 hours is usually enough not 6 ime

Notsoflirtythirty · 18/06/2024 06:49

Yep always gets a walk, it's not long to be left, ge should absolutely be able to go that long, and speaking with the vet confirmed this.

As I said he goes overnight so it's not an unrealistic ask for him to hold on.

Vet confirmed what? He might be able to go 6 hours without physically needing to pee though clearly your dog can't. And the vet can't 'confirm' that your dog isn't stressed and anxious after 6 hours alone. You're in denial because you know you're not caring for your dog properly.

Of course it's too long to be left. Just because he physically can be left 6 hours a day and he won't die or anything doesn't mean it's a nice life for your dog. Hmm

Given you're clearly not going to stop leaving him 6 hours a day and haven't thought to get a dog walker in to break up his day I'm not sure what solution you're looking for?

Ylvamoon · 18/06/2024 06:55

I think you need to invest some time into the dog in the morning and have someone to let hom out ... it's not forever only until he's matured.

Dog & FT job can work, but it's tiring and hard work.

... Mine have been out for a long walk already, they'll have breakfast soon and then I go work- just after 7am ... DH is at work (shift) but pop on at around 10:30 and he'll be home around 2pm... to give you an idea of what is involved caring for a dog.

the dog has proved your vet wrong.

Blahblah34 · 18/06/2024 06:57

Have you taken video recordings of the puppy when you are out for 6 hours? He may well have separation anxiety which is causing him to wee from distress.

Well he’s just going to pee in the house every day then if you can’t be bothered to be a decent person and get a dog walker.

It is unrealistic for him to hold on, he is a puppy and 6 hours is too long to be left, no matter what your crock of a vet says.

DustyLee123 · 18/06/2024 06:59

My dog doesn’t need a wee at night, but he doesn’t go 6 hours in the day without a wee. YABU.

Notsoflirtythirty · 18/06/2024 07:01

One at no point did I say I couldn't afford the dog Walker I just said I wanted to avoid the extortionate cost if possible. Two I've had a dog for 3 years prior to having him so am well aware of the involvement. I get up at 5.30 with them every day. And following on no unfortunately I can't just sack off my job.

My partner up until recently was on shift work so was around but had to change jobs due to health reasons. But should I just get rid of them like most people would because my life has unfortunately changed.

No it's not an ideal time they are left, but I'm grateful I'm on a term time contract so they get a lot of time when I am home.

Procrastinates · 18/06/2024 07:05

So your dog has been used to having someone at home for part of the day and now you've changed their routine to expect them to be alone for 6 hours because your husband has a new job... Don't you think that's relevant information and part of the reason the dog is now pissing everywhere.

Added to that your dogs routine changes regularly. Some weeks you're away all day and others you're at home. Can't you see how confusing that is for him?

No one is saying get rid of the dog they are just wondering why you can't see the blindinly obvious solution... Seriously just employ a bloody dog walker and put your dog first it's really not rocket science....

Whinge · 18/06/2024 07:07

But should I just get rid of them like most people would because my life has unfortunately changed.

You shouldn't just get rid because your circumstances have changed, but you do need to consider if your home is now the right place for a dog. If you think dog walkers are extortionate and prefer to keep a puppy locked inside without company for 6 hours, then perhaps it might be better off in a home that can actually provide the basics of what he needs.

I'm grateful I'm on a term time contract so they get a lot of time when I am home.

I actually don't think this is as brilliant as you think it is. The poor dog is going to go from no company for 6 hours, to someone around every day for 6 weeks, then back to being left alone again. Sad

fieldsofbutterflies · 18/06/2024 07:11

You're leaving him alone for way too long- six hours is too much even for most adult dogs, let alone a puppy 😩

BusyCM · 18/06/2024 07:27

I'm secretly glad when bad puppy owners get a protest from their puppies! You deserve the inconvenience of cleaning up a puddle for leaving him so long.

Twiglets1 · 18/06/2024 07:31

6 hours seems too long to leave a puppy of that age alone during the daytime. I could do it with my middle aged dog as long as he had a good walk first but was around more when he was younger.

The answer is probably to employ a dog walker to take him out at lunchtime.

DogUnderDesk · 18/06/2024 07:35

Mine is the same age and asks to go out for a wee every two hours or so during the day. I think it's different at night as they are solidly asleep, not pottering about. (TBH, I'm much the same.)

I'm not as it means the dogs' needs aren't being met.
