Getting dog to take a pissing tablet

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 03/06/2024 21:00

You’d think it was the size of a fucking dvd the way she’s going in but it is not. It’s the size of an anti histamine. Absolutely tiny certainly a lot smaller than the earplug she once ate. But will she take it? Will she fuck.

She’s generally quite good at tablets except for her worming one where we have the same problem but that is actually massive.

She can hold it in her mouth for 15m before spitting it out.

Sges currently on a v limited diet of hypoallergenic food, treats (both dry and hard so no squishing) and carrots (I scooped a hole right in the centre and stuffed it in. SO pleased with myself but I’ve just found it on the floor!)

ANY ideas much appreciated!

are you allowed to crush it? I'd crush it in some peanut butter or hide it in a bit of cheese

itsmeagainagain · 03/06/2024 21:03

ignore me! I totally misread what you put sorry!

DreamyCyanFinch · 03/06/2024 21:03

Can't you grind the tablet into a powder and mix it with food.

Nomorecoconutboosts · 03/06/2024 21:06

Get a big lump of something quite slippy such as dairylea, pate or butter - stick tablet in middle, don’t let Ddog watch you!
for suspicious dogs give them a couple of ‘starters’ without the tablet then slip it in!
might take a couple of goes (watch carefully) but usually my pug scoffs it all down (with his eyes like saucers)
we find hiding it in something more crunchy makes him likely to detect it

Nomorecoconutboosts · 03/06/2024 21:07

Sorry missed the limited diet
anu chance you can dampen the food make it more squishy or cook and mash the carrot?

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 03/06/2024 21:08

She can’t have another food than the dry food, specific treats and carrots.

I might try grinding it up and sprinkling it over her food. Very high chance she’d rather just fucking starve though 😂

Hmm maybe mushing the carrot might work 🤔

Can she have plain chicken broth? Poach a chicken breast, shred it, crush tablet in the liquid

Ummm
Shove it in her mouth and immediately follow with a treat?
Play catch the carrot chunk but one has the tablet in?

I had a cat that even the vet refused to give tablets too so my sympathy

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 03/06/2024 21:12

Are you able to hold dogs chin up, pop tablet in mouth and smooth throat? It’s what DM did with her poodle. I’ve done it with my Lab once or twice. Usually he will just eat it (Lab) if not we pretend it’s yummy, then he takes it.

Nomorecoconutboosts · 03/06/2024 21:12

Can you double check with the vet that she can’t have a really tiny amount of something strong tasting just to get the tablet down her. If she’s a bit off her food anyway you wouldn’t want to waste a meal and tablet by crushing it over a dinner?

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 03/06/2024 21:13

Sadly no chicken (or meat of any kind!)

I shoved it in her mouth then gave her a treat immediately all in one go yesterday and she still managed to spit it out (but eat the treat) 😂

Shes normally v good but these new ones are apparently awful (if they work she’ll be on one a day forever which is…unappealing…!)

Hope she’s better soon it’s a worry isn’t it when they are ill

Swissrollover · 03/06/2024 21:13

I'd try lightly steaming (or microwaving with a drop of water) the carrot chunks, as this seems to be the only available vehicle that can carry a pill.

Idontknowwhattodo78 · 03/06/2024 21:14

Parma ham! You only need a teeny little bit but it sticks to the tablet - works every time. Alternatively shove it in her mouth, blow GENTLY down her nose and rub her throat at the same time. That forces them to swallow….

No sadly not. She’s on a really strict elimination diet to get to the bottom of some allergies so absolutely nothing else.

We use cheese with ours but tonight for the first time he’s realised what’s happening and eaten around the tablet

Back up plan was a piece of leftover chicken from supper - cut a hole in it and popped it inside and he ate it straight down

AppleStrudel23 · 03/06/2024 21:15

Is your dog food crazy? I think a good trick is shove in something like a cocktail sausage and make out it's for you or your preparing it so the dog comes over and starts to really want it and then accidentally "drop" it. My dogs never eats as quickly as she does when she's not supposed to have something. I don't have to use this trick however, my dog is a Labrador so would eat a sofa if I left it in her bowl with her biscuits

I use this

Beautifulbythebay · 03/06/2024 21:16

Surely whatever is on your plate?

fieldsofbutterflies · 03/06/2024 21:16

Is nobody reading the OP? 😬🙈

I would try making a carrot mash type thing OP and mixing it in with that if possible? Or can you get a kind of pill popper thing for dogs like you can for cats?

Mine just thinks medication is a treat so I've never had this issue 😂

Apparently not 😂

I tried the “cooking” then dropping it on the floor which works without fail. She sat and looked at me like I was a fucking idiot 😂

Im half tempted to lick one to see if they’re actually that bad (probably won’t…)

fabio12 · 03/06/2024 21:19

Can you put it in cheese then throw it in the air? Ddog gulps anything thrown and cheese never fails

Lavender14 · 03/06/2024 21:23

I'm not sure if this only works on dogs like mine that only have the one brain cell (that works part time) but I throw the tablet on the floor like I would a treat and say wait... wait... and then go! And he has swallowed it before its even hit his tongue and thinks he's been rewarded for something? He might be an unusual case though.

For my cat I have a harder time (full time brain cells used for evil) and I grind the tablets into a powder and mix into a small amount of wet food so I know he'll eat all of it.

Hope this helps it can be super stressful!

underseige05 · 03/06/2024 21:23

My dog was on a soyabean dry food diet for over a year while having treatment for a liver problem so was on many tablets. When she got fussy with the food unsurprisingly we had to get creative as her only allowed treats were ice cubes.
Get a syringe pop the tablet in and draw in some water. Hold your finger over the end and shake till it dissolves then staight in the mouth keeping the mouth closed till they swallow. We did this for over 6 months and worked like a dream.

Enough098 · 03/06/2024 21:25

Can you look at the ingredients on the dog food, and if there's say chicken in it, cook some chicken and put the tablet in that.
