Getting dog to take a pissing tablet

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 03/06/2024 21:00

You’d think it was the size of a fucking dvd the way she’s going in but it is not. It’s the size of an anti histamine. Absolutely tiny certainly a lot smaller than the earplug she once ate. But will she take it? Will she fuck.

She’s generally quite good at tablets except for her worming one where we have the same problem but that is actually massive.

She can hold it in her mouth for 15m before spitting it out.

Sges currently on a v limited diet of hypoallergenic food, treats (both dry and hard so no squishing) and carrots (I scooped a hole right in the centre and stuffed it in. SO pleased with myself but I’ve just found it on the floor!)

ANY ideas much appreciated!

Sorry re read your stuff, she has a specific diet. Is she allowed to drink milk with this diet?

Kendodd · 03/06/2024 21:30

Can the tablet be crushed, mixed with water then shot down her throat with a children's medicine syringe? Possibly even while she's asleep?

ThePoetsWife · 03/06/2024 21:32

Cook the carrot and when soft squash the pull into it

LiesDoNotBecomeUs · 03/06/2024 21:33

We usually butter tablets to make them seem fatty (and make them slippy)

  • we use butter or lard or dripping or even olive oil.

Some of the carrots could be cooked a little - to make them mush a bit - then add the (possibly crushed) tablet?

Drama:
Put a scoop of the infected carrot on one of your own dinner plates (after you have finished eating) and let the dog have the plate ? Ours would certainly fall for such a forbidden treat as human food must be an upgrade.

BrokenWing · 03/06/2024 21:37

Sit with her between your legs facing away from you, rubbing around her ears/chin/face and pop it in when she doesn’t expect it, hold mouth up and shut and rub throat until lots of licking and swallowing makes sure it has gone down.

there are pill poppers to help you get it further back in throat if you can’t open the mouth enough.

What breed is she, I always found collies easier to open their mouths than labs, and larger dogs easier than very small as easier to grip without potentially hurting for example

Towards the end of the video

Could you soak a couple of her dry biscuits or treats in water to make a mush and hide or mix crushed tablet in it?
Or hollow out a tablet sized hole in a biscuit to push the tablet in?

MrsWhites · 03/06/2024 21:42

I have tried everything with my dog - his worming tablets are huge, no amount of cheese or dairylea will disguise it - he literally sucks all the treat off the tablet and then spits it out.

Now I crush the tablet and mix it with a bit of beef or salmon paste and put it on a licky mat, that way you can see if any of the bits are left.

Roryhon · 03/06/2024 21:44

Ours is allergic to loads. I would still use a lump of cheese as a one off to get a tablet down. It won’t make that much difference to allergy tests if it’s a one off tiny bit, surely. We coat our tablets in itchy dog oil.

Otherwise do what we do with the cats. Hold them firmly, prise open the mouth, put the tablet right at the back of the throat, hold the dogs nose up and the mouth closed and gently stroke the throat until they swallow. Usually only takes a few seconds.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 03/06/2024 21:51

Grate carrot over a bit of the dog food as a "treat" in usual bowl. If dog eats it, crush tablet into powder & mix into grated carrot then again put over/mix into dog food.

Or can you crush the dog food & add the powdered tablet. Then top with a bit of the grated carrot to tempt doggo.

thewreckofthehesperus · 03/06/2024 21:56

What i do with mine is have two pieces of ham ready, one with the pill wrapped in it. Feed the pill first and then the other piece. My dog gobbles the first one down as hes so eager to get the second piece down his gob too.

Could you try that with softened carrot?

Luckypoppy · 03/06/2024 21:59

Crush it in between two spoons. Add it to some water then syringe it using a calpol syringe. It's the only way my yorkie will take any medication.

Eyesopenwideawake · 03/06/2024 22:09

Open her mouth and push it down her throat, as vet's do. The only fool proof method.

LizzieBennett73 · 03/06/2024 22:12

Mine is on daily arthritis meds and they must taste disgusting as he really doesn't want to swallow it! We've perfected a technique though - throat open really wide, tablet thrown to back of throat then close mouth and rub until they've swallowed. 99.9% success rate.

mitogoshi · 03/06/2024 22:13

Unfortunately none of my tricks are suitable due to the diet situation. That said my ddog had pulled tablets from cheese, steak, even a human chocolate (roses so hardly any cocoa) they are crafty creatures

OldTinHat · 03/06/2024 22:16

Have you tried squishing it in a lump of cheese?

1984fluffysheep · 03/06/2024 22:18

This will sound insane I know but it worked on my dog for his worming tablet so... worth a shot.

I got it in my hand, held it up to my mouth and pretended to eat it. Made lots of mmmm noises until he was very interested and wanted whatever I was "eating" and then gave it to him. He ate it before he realised what it was lol! Before I did this he'd spat it out about 4 times.

soupfiend · 03/06/2024 22:21

How big is the dog, can you do what you do with cats which is to pinch the sides of their mouths to make them open it, shove the tablet at the back of their throat and them stroke their neck to make them swallow?

Then drive to A+E with your fingers in an ice box of course

Bobbie12345 · 03/06/2024 22:21

Depending on your dog and any chance they will bite you… stand behind, with your left hand (if you are right handed) hold their chin up, with the tablet between finger and thumb in your right hand work in between their rear teeth on the right, pop the tablet just over the back of their tongue, immediately give them a yummy treat while still holding their chin up a bit.
Takes some getting the hang of but then becomes so quick and easy. My dog sits and waits for the process because he loves the treat he gets. Not distressing for him at all.

RicePuddingWithCinnamon · 03/06/2024 22:23

Can someone else do it? My dog used to run off if I even thought about giving her her medicine, like she KNEW but she would happily eat any old bloody thing when my mum fed her 🙄

Copperoliverbear · 03/06/2024 22:26

Chicken, peanut butter xylitol free, roast beef. X

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 03/06/2024 22:38

So I’ve tried the putting it to the back of the mouth and holding her mouth and stroking her neck and it has a 50% success rate. She apparently gets it between her gum and lip the spits it out later.

Now to be fair, in secondary school I mastered the ability to hide contraband chewing gum and smarties under my lip so I’m actually impressed at her smarts! But it’s so annoying 😂

Im going to try mushed carrot tomorrow and report back. She’s never had cooked carrot so we can but pray!

She doesn’t like her kibble made wet sadly (that could be because I once decided to make a paste of it to stick in a kong but it was taking forever to soften so I microwaved it…well you can imagine the smell…) otherwise that could be an option!

Her diet really is that strict right now, I’m not taking any chances with just a bit of cheese etc if it means her going back to red raw skin

Ill go to the vet’s and pick up one of those pill syringe things linked above (she may see it as a torture device tbh)

Shes a 6kg Westie (and the absolute goodest girl!) So I’m not overly worried about biting. Frankly it can’t be worse then the puppy stage esp as the vet declared he’d never seen such sharp teeth 🧛

Do you have a cat?

Been trying for ages today to give my dog a tablet, employing all sorts of delivery agents/tricks.

Only thing that worked was when I pretended to give the cheese the tablet finally got wrapped up in to the cat. Snaffled it down in one then after many many trie in a jealous fit!

HarrietSchulenberg · 03/06/2024 22:57

My lurcher is similar. The only way I can get tablets into him is to tip his head back, prise his jaws open and drop the tablet straight down his gullet then hold his mouth closed and massage his throat till he swallows. Helps to have 2 people to do it but I can do it on my own with some swearing.
He's been known to lick bowls clean of chicken dinners and leave the tablet rattling in the bowl.
