Recommend me a dog food

I’m fed up with raw - defrosting, mucky dishes and freezer space etc especially heading into summer

Looking for a decent kibble that produces nice smallish 💩s.

Can spend up to £50 a 15kg or thereabouts

Any recommendations please 😁

Bakers complete here. With frozen raw chicken hocks or wings as a side dish . Very happy healthy dog.

Amazon lifelong grain free is v good and well under budget 😀🐶😀

FfsJaney · 03/05/2024 06:45

A thousand times no to Bakers. One of the worse foods on the market. Cereals make up the majority of the ingredients and the other ingredients aren't even listed. It really is terrible food.

Floramac · 03/05/2024 08:28

Millies wolfheart, excellent quality food, very helpful customer service.

it always gets a bad press on here but I’ve got three friends that feed it all have happy healthy dogs with beautiful coats!
I feed vets kitchen sensitive. For years I used to feed a very expensive kibble for dogs with digestion problem can’t remember what it was called but there was a brief supply issue and I grabbed a small bag of vets kitchen sensitive in Tesco hoping it would tide me over and have never looked back. I have a very old dog who looks a million dollars the vet thought I’d acquired a new dog because he looks like a 5 yr old and my young corgi looks amazing on it the dog groomer who also shows dogs commented on his lovely shinny coat and asked what I feed him.

stillstanding51 · 03/05/2024 10:22

Thanks! Seems like Harringtons is worth a try 👍😁

Don’t forget with a higher quality food you feed less as it’s not got bulking in which dogs don’t need. So look at feeding amounts to compare costs rather than weight.

Millie wolfheart is excellent. JWB is ok (used to be very good), Arden Grange the same. Depends a bit on the dog but you are looking for high protein and low carbs generally for quality. (Plus where the protein is coming from)

Our 3 year old lab has been on Guru Surf n Turf most of his life, he loves it. Good, regular poos. You can mix a little hot water on it to create a kind of gravy to put in Kongs/slow feeders etc and we often scatter feed him/use his daily allowance for training treats. Our dog has a lovely coat. We order from here - they are really reliable https://www.pet-shopper.co.uk/product/guru-surf-and-turf-dog-food-13kg Worth checking the recommended amount to feed as I understand you typically feed less volume of this kind of cold pressed kibble than others so you might find it's slightly over your budget but might last longer in the long run.

I completely agree. I was coming on here to say that you have to find the food that suits your dog as they are all so different but this stuff is not even a food. It is full of dyes and potentially carcinogenic so please do avoid.

Also look in to the wisdom of feeding grain free as there are potential cardiac issues with this - it's all still being investigated.

INeedVitaminSea · 06/05/2024 12:02

All my sighthoundy dogs (known for sloppy poos) have done very well on small-bite IAMS, with a bit of mashed Naturo wet food to make gravy.

Yes I think it's a good brand - my lot won't touch it though!

Brilliant choice! Our german shepherd whos' almost 12 has been on this for many years, tend to have the salmon and veg, orchard and turf. The treats are also lovely.

Applesandpairsofrocks · 11/05/2024 16:52

Millie’s is a great choice

there customer service is excellent and lots of options

Eden is similar and also very good

stillstanding51 · 11/05/2024 17:10

3 days in and poo isn’t great yet. Did a quick switch mixing it with raw and then 100% Millies
Hopefully it’ll sort itself out over the next few days

I'll be interested to hear how you get on with Millies Wolfheart. I'm currently trying it out on my fussy boy. So far he doesn't seem keen.

I think perhaps he just doesn't like kibble. I'm not keen to do raw food for the reasons you mention.

Might try Harringtons next.

You could hardly pick a worse food.

MercyDulb0ttle · 11/05/2024 17:21

I fed my boy kibble for years and he ate it ok.

Then I switched - at first because I’d run out of his kibble and told DH to
just pick up a couple of cans of anything from Tesco - to Naturo cans.

He goes mad for it and it’s rated highly on AADF.

They also often have cracking offers.

stillstanding51 · 11/05/2024 17:23

My lad is eating it with gusto!

Its just output isn’t great, early days though 🤞

i read you dont need to go grain free, unless they are allergic

Willmafrockfit · 11/05/2024 17:25

my dog has tinned butchers in the morning and currently wagg complete in the evening.

MercyDulb0ttle · 11/05/2024 17:27

Just looked up Hills prescription diet - the one the vets always try to flog you. Bloody hell. £9 a day it’ll cost you and it rates 18%. God, vets have got a nerve.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 11/05/2024 17:31

Mine is on tails - she was on eukanuba when we got her as a rescue. But she was sick quite a bit. Then tried barking heads which she loved but triggered allergies & pancreatitis which vet suspected why she was unwell on eukanuba also. After Hills which she loathed we moved to tails and have had no issues with since.

i know you have started on Millie’s but thought this useful as well for others.

We got cost back through insurance as it was for a medical reason until her pancreatitis calmed down - took months. But at least weren’t out of pocket.
