The doghouse

If you're worried about your pet's health, please speak to a vet or qualified professional.

For weeks we have searched rescue centres for a youngish family dog. We've tried RSPCA, Battersea, Dogs Trust, Many Tears, Bordercollie Trust, Collie rescue, local rescues, much less local ones

Please can some one think of anything that might help. The last two I spoke to said they had absolutely nothing in but young dogs with behavioural problems (often lockdown related) and big breed dogs/ greyhounds. We have such a dog shaped hole in this house. We'd love to fill it. Has anyone any suggestions please?

In reply to the Many Tears question, copied from their : About Us ' info

ABOUT US

Many Tears Animal Rescue (MTAR) is based in Carmarthenshire, Wales but has dogs in foster homes throughout the UK. We take in and rehome primarily ex-breeding dogs who are no longer required; those on "death row" in the pounds and those whose owners are no longer able to keep them.
We are a unique rescue in that the majority of our dogs are ex-breeders and many have never seen the outside world before. With the help of our staff, fosterers and other volunteers we provide a special and loving environment to help all our dogs adapt and find permanent, loving new homes. All potential adopters are interviewed and homes vetted and we do our utmost best to find the right home for each dog. The rescue has grown considerably since it first opened and now homes in excess of 3,000 dogs a year.
All our dogs are spayed/neutered, micro chipped, inoculated and wormed but in addition to this we get many dogs in need of specialist veterinary care. Some of the most frequent problems we encounter are dogs who arrive here with eye and heart problems, along with those with liver shunts and joint problems. Any treatment is required is financed by donations to the rescue which enable us to ensure each dog receives the specialist care it needs.
Our History In 2004 Sylvia and Bill Van Atta bought a property called Cawdor Kennels in Carmarthenshire, Wales. The previous owners had a yard with kennels used for show dogs and they used these kennels to open their new rescue called Many Tears Animal Rescue. Originally the rescue was set up as a Not For Profit Company but in November 2020 Many Tears Animal Rescue became a registered charity. (No: 1192227).

Both Sylvia and Bill have a long history of animal rescue - particularly Sylvia who has set up and worked in rescues in both the UK and USA. They have witnessed many sad situations and shed many tears over dogs in terrible situations and hence the name Many Tears Animal Rescue.

Although Many Tears is based in Wales it has dogs in foster homes throughout the UK. We take in and rehome ex-breeding dogs, those from pounds, others whose owners are no longer able to keep them and, when we have space, we help rescues overseas

You could try asking if you can put a "wanted" sign up at the local livestock mart, somebody might have a couple of spare collie pups going, or a youngster that doesn't have enough drive to work.

That's a good idea. Thank you.

What about this little guy? www.dogstrust.org.uk/rehoming/dogs/collie-border/3450238

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 20/04/2024 22:24

15 collies on M T right now, tho some are collie X's. aged from 8 weeks to 9 years. dogs and bitches.
2 of which are shy / scared, so that's down to 13 and I guess exclude the 9 year old too as you are looking for a young dog altho he has come from a home, and one would like to be adopted with her friend so that brings you down to 11...

all of which appear to be at the center, not in foster.

If you’re not set on a rescue then Wicantoft have a tofty puppy available. A tofty is a rough collie/welsh sheepdog mix and they are part of a breeding programme to reduce the number of diseases etc found in rough collies. Toftys don’t tend to have the big show collie coat, they look a bit more like border collies coat wise.

The breeder is well known in collie world. This puppy is a male and was part of an accidental litter when the breeder was in hospital and the dog sitter wasn’t careful about keeping the dogs separate! If you look on the Yorkshire tofty Facebook page then there are lots of videos of him.

What about a kelpie? Very collie like. We have had 2 rescues. The second was from the kelpie welfare Facebook page.

High hopes dog rescue, though the vast majority are from abroad and I know this does bother some people.

We have a rescue dog through a private rescue advertising on Pets 4 Homes. Quite a few rescues advertised through there - and actually were the only ones who ever responded to an online enquiry form ( I completed many many forms). At that time there were at least 3 or 4 collies being re-homed privately. 2 were from farms in Wales where they didn’t have the right working temperament, 1 from Central London (🙁) and one other in a rescue in Lincolnshire.

Bulgarian Rescue Dogs - You could try these guys out, they have theirs hands full at the moment with litters from pregnant strays. Ran by a couple from the UK who moved to Bulgaria to set up their own rescue after helping another rescue over there.

Gumtree is full of collies and collie mixes that are rehomed as people don't understand how much energy they heave and how much stimulation they need.
GT is notorious for puppy mils but there is fair chunk of owners who prefer to arrange rehoming and checks themselves and don't want dog getting to kennel.
I got mine collie mix through there and he is with us for seven years now. Still in contacct with previous owner (us by email, not the dog).

This is how I found an adult chihuahua. Allergies were the only issue. Very nice woman and we're Facebook friends now. My dog is perfect for me.
