Artificial grass….how to train dog not to toilet on it?

NewMeNewUs · 04/04/2024 20:44

We are having our garden renovated in a couple of weeks which included artificial grass being laid.
the gardener has advised me to train the dog (1 year old Labrador) not to toilet on the fake grass, she can do it on the patio instead.
my question is how do I teach this!? Many thanks

This thread is nasty can't blame op for not coming back . Most people banging on like they are holier-than-thou. Probably have like 2 cars. Paved drive ways. Go abroad. Probably do several things not environmental friendly.

Yeah they replies will be . But I need my car ... dint go abroad everyday do we. We need a drive for my needed car . But thus But that bla bla.

You don't know ops situation. People just love a pile on . The thread is pointless.

AstroTurd made me smile!

I didn't spot that! It was a genuine typo = but a relevant one Grin

In my defence, the D is right next to the F....

Seriously are you suggesting that doing things to ensure you can work and get about ie have a car and somewhere to park it is the same as ripping up your lawn and covering it in plastic? 😂

youngones1 · 05/04/2024 17:22

Fake grass is the best, so convenient, stays green throughout the winter and doesn't turn to mud even in the shade. I would take your dog out to do their business and reward them when they do, they will soon understand.

Drive to work/get about by car = damage to environment.

Fake grass = damage to environment

Everyone damages the environment in some way.weather its due to driving etc or laying fake grass

I hope you send pix of your plastic garden to the Shitlawns account on X.

If you fence off the AstroTurf the dog will end up going on the patio out if necessity, but I’d really think twice if you want dog wee on your patio. Our patio is fenced off and when we’ve had stuff going on in the garden that we needed to keep the dogs away from, like a boundary wall being replaced, we just kept them on the patio when they needed to go outside. Never again! A pool of urine on the patio is just disgusting! 🤢

So do really think if you actually want your dog using your patio as a regular loo. It won’t be a place you’d want to barbecue on or sit out on if you do.

You won’t be able to stop all the neighbourhood cats crapping and peeing on it.
A neighbour’s artificial front lawn could be smelt from several yards away despite copious amounts of sluicing. They resorted to using disinfectant that was equally offensive and killed off the plants in their borders.
Eventually they ripped it all up.

They must've had really shite drainage

CosmosQueen · 05/04/2024 17:36

@K0OLA1D it had good drainage but they had to constantly sluice shit off it or it stank during the hot summers we’re experiencing here.
I can not think of anything much worse than having that stench right outside my window.

Well ours doesn't stink and we have a dog, 4 cats (who have actually never shit on my grass) shed loads of neighbours cats (again, never seen cat shit) and foxes.

So there must have been something wrong for it to smell so badly

OldTinHat · 05/04/2024 17:51

My DF asked that my DDog didn't toilet on his lawn (after DDog had been allowed to for ten years odd). It caused huge stress for DDog and me, so we just stopped visiting.

I think you can train dogs to 'go' in a particular place, but it won't be easy if they've been allowed all over and then told no.

IndecentPropolis · 05/04/2024 17:59

We’ve had ours 5 years and it’s never got too hot for anyone’s comfort including the dog/s and it doesn’t smell.

Real grass also stays green in the winter!!

i disagree. Fake grass is bloody horrible imo.

Have any of you with a real lawn considered the environmental cost of using a lawnmower which was probably made in a sweat shop in China and shipped thousands of miles to the UK and powered by electricity from non renewable sources.

Mine was made in Austria, and its powered by me.

Such a silly question (but my push lawn mower is powered by me & if looked after will have a longer life than plastic grass). All our activities have an environmental impact but a lawn has a huge positive environmental impact despite impact of a lawnmower while a plastic lawn has multiple negative impacts from production, transport, installation and disposal, while also having a negative impact just being there - along with all that hoovering & washing.

Blanketpolicy · 06/04/2024 21:11

Our dog always pee'd on the gravel and poo'd only on walks.

If you create a toilet area of gravel or soil (not the patio!), keep in lead until they pee and use traditional training reward methods then should be easy enough

Ecstaticmotion · 06/04/2024 21:18

Fake grass is a sign of a world gone absolutely insane.

If anyone did have such a situation, it would still be environmentally better than your ugly fake grass.

Fake grass is a sign of a world gone absolutely insane.

It also saves the owners the bother of displaying a sign outside their house saying ‘we have no taste’.

What about the neighbourhood cats and foxes ? You won't be able to train them and believe me fox poo is a whole new league of smelly

A lab is the least of your problems with artificial grass

The foxes round here serm to permanently have the runs. I could not face that on plastic grass every morning.
