Why oh why?!? Puppy 😂

Dh has been pestering me for what feels like months for a puppy…

Guess what we got at the weekend…a 13 week old puppy

I think I must have blanked out the puppy days and looked back with rose tinted glasses 😂 (we have 2 other dogs) house training, crate training, getting up twice a night to let the puppy out for a wee, the chewing of anything and everything 😂

Yes I know it will get better and yes I should have said no 🫣

Just remind me I just have to get through the next few weeks - is it too early to have a glass of wine 🍷 😂

Ahhhh take lots of photos! (And keep pouring the wine.) They grow so fast!! 💔

21ZIGGY · 03/04/2024 19:24

They grow up so fast and it is worth it but i think its the next few months rather than weeks thatll be tough...🙃 and i need to remind myself of that now mine is 2.5 and i keep thinking of another

Goldenphoenix · 03/04/2024 21:15

Oh it's very stressful having a pup but worth it in the end. Mine is 9 months old now and those first few months seem a lifetime ago! Be kind to yourself and accept this is a cute but difficult stage!

hipposcanweartutus · 07/04/2024 10:00

Is never too early for wine! We’ve always had older, rescue dogs until we got our Jack Russell terorist Lucy as a puppy. She is nearly 2 years old and is gorgeous but I have to admit, nothing could have prepared us for the first few months! Her saving grace is that she was an angel overnight! Enjoy the puppy months and remember, it does get easier but you may want to increase your wine order!

MarvellousMonsters · 07/04/2024 10:04

Why indeed when there are so many dogs waiting to be rehomed in rescue centres. Hmm

StormingNorman · 07/04/2024 10:16

It’s all about context. A glass of red may be a bit heavy with breakfast…get on the Buck’s Fizz. Maybe without the orange juice 😂

PurpleOodie · 07/04/2024 10:32

It was 7 months of pure hell with our youngest dog. If anyone I know ever tells me that they’re thinking of getting a puppy, my answer is always “don’t do it”. I love my dogs beyond belief but in all honestly I do regret getting them.

Why indeed when there are so many dogs waiting to be rehomed in rescue centres. Hmm

Every bloody time someone gets a puppy.... Many people are not in a position to take a rescue dog, because they often come with a long list of conditions (some combo of no other dogs, no cats, no under 10s in the household, no visiting children ever, must always be kept on a lead, cannot ever be left, can't have dogs next door, must be muzzled when out, must be away from main roads, has resource guarding and a bite history, has no manners so can't be near anyone infirm...)

I say this as someone who grew up with two dogs who were effectively rescues: private rehomes (there were no rescue centres where we lived), one due to be PTS the next day.

WhatACluster · 07/04/2024 11:09

@MarvellousMonsters we were turned down by 3 rescues, we have cats, part of a fence is only 5ft tall (I have trellis to put on top but that wasn’t good enough) I have 2 older children who have lived with dogs all their lives yet went against us…we have resident dogs which again was something that one rescue wasn’t happy about 🤷‍♀️ the lists were endless and the hoops we had to jump through were ridiculous, one rescue wanted to see proof my income, and the fees were astronomical we paid less for a fully vaccinated puppy, microchipped etc than the £600 one rescue wanted.

We wanted a specific breed. So we went with a puppy from a breeder/dog trainer who was entirely happy with our house, set up and family. We met them several times of the course of a couple of week, they did a garden check, met my resident dogs. The breeder is a fountain of knowledge and we are happy with our decision.

Whilst I would have loved to rescue apparently our situation is not favourable to some rescues and I wasn’t going to waste any more of my time trying different ones.

Many years ago I used to foster dogs (pre children) for a breed specific rescue, I know a lot of the challenges dogs can face, I only stopped fostering as the rescue I worked with wouldn’t let me do it whilst my children were under 7 due to insurance purposes.

Anyway he’s a small terror 😂 destroyed my rose bush and several pairs of socks and taken a good chunk out of a kitchen chair, but he’s absolutely fantastic, this week he’s learnt, sit, down, stay, wait, today we are doing crate and come 😂 however he’s now fully house trained.

I hated the puppy phase, then the adolescent phase. Thank god adult dogs are lovely 😁.

Although my 7 year old soon to be 8 dog still acts like an arsehole sometimes just to remind me why I would never get a puppy again 😆

Easier said than done. The rescue near us will not allow any of their dogs to be crated, ever - if you do, you have to give the dog back. My dog (who is nearly 6, got him as a puppy) sleeps in a nice bed in a large crate in the bedroom with me and DH. He's happy, safe and loved - and removed from the crate immediately if he asks. The crate is for his own safety as he's tiny and we don't want him squashed under someone's feet in the dark or something. But we are unsuitable for rescue.

Plus the latest one I came across from a friend trying to adopt….

Every other animal they owned had to be neutered, no entire males or females……
they have a small number of goats, all milkers so no rescue!

How do they find out though to then demand the dog back ??!’

Obviously the dog would fire off an email about the illegal crating as soon as it was released.

Elebag · 07/04/2024 12:07

I love these threads. It reminds me why I really can't get a dog whenever I feel like I'm wobbling.

you sign to say you won’t crate

i prefer only to sign things that I am going to abide by

This was me a few weeks ago! 'Why did I do this!?' He's 5 months now, we've turned a corner, he's called down a bit 💓

What about horses? Mice?

Maybe talk to the centres about their conditions? A friend of mine has just been turned down because she's too old, even for an old dog, despite being incredibly sprites and walking 5-8 miles daily, with or without a dog and her daughter undertaking to take the dog if friend doesn't outlive it.
