poorly dog - emergency vet on Easter Sunday ?

My 2 year old Cavalier King Charles spaniel was sick a couple of times on Friday evening and has not eaten since then. We have managed to get him to take some water but nothing else. He seemed okay in himself yesterday, but not 100%. Last night he was restless but did manage to sleep.
This morning he seems very lethargic and still won't eat.
I have called the emergency vet number and they are willing to see him (at a large cost !), but said we could also monitor him at home and see if he improves later today and if not take him in later.
Unfortunately we don't drive, so to get him to the emergency vet would involve trying to get an Uber willing to take a dog.

I'm really not sure what to do for the best.

If my dog hadn't eaten in 48 hours I would want them checked by the vet, especially as tomorrow is also a Bank Holiday so it's not like the cost will change overnight.

tabulahrasa · 31/03/2024 13:42

Is he drinking normal amounts? What have you tried feeding him?

Do you know how to check it he’s dehydrated?

Sorry, I know lots of questions, just trying to work out if I’d take him straight away or not...

Blanketpolicy · 31/03/2024 13:43

I’d have taken mine in. Insurance will cover the costs.

he has had a small amount to drink. We have tried feeding him his normal food, treats he would normally love including ham and cheese and I also tried scrambled egg, but he wasn't interested.
I'm not sure how to check if he is dehydrated

Gently pinch the back of his neck and see if the skin goes back down instantly or stays raised up.

Just tried that and the skin seemed to go back down fairly quickly

Has he been pooing?

If he's not been in a few days it could be he has an obstruction in his intestine and that needs checking out ASAP

He definitely needs to see a vet today

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 31/03/2024 14:03

Vet. No other option as you cannot wait until Tuesday at 9am.

ByUmberViewer · 31/03/2024 14:03

I'd take him today it won't be any cheaper tomorrow and he can't be left.

Just a matter of finding an uber but It will be much cheaper than a home visit. it's also better to take him to the vets anyway because all the equipment is there. Can a friend drive you?

OrlandointheWilderness · 31/03/2024 14:03

If he is not eating and is lethargic I would take him now. He could've ingested something poisonous.

Floralnomad · 31/03/2024 14:04

I’d take him in especially as it’s still BH tomorrow .

lovemycbf · 31/03/2024 14:09

Not meaning to panic you but my dog vomited twice on a Sunday and died Monday night as she had acute pancreatitis
Don't hesitate would be my advice
Do you have insurance?as a claim can go in to get money back from emergency vets

tabulahrasa · 31/03/2024 14:22

If he’s not eating anything at all and only drinking a small amount - yeah, I’d take him in

muddyford · 31/03/2024 14:23

The lethargy is the most worrying symptom. He does need to see a vet asap.

NearlyBritishSummertimeYay · 31/03/2024 14:27

I hope he's ok xx

id take him to the vet asap.

i would happily take any if my family/friends/neighbours to the vets. I'd be annoyed if the didn't ask.

effoffwind · 31/03/2024 14:27

Please take the dog to the vet

You'll regret it massively if you delay and doggy deteriorates

We have to suck these costs up as pet lovers

Think how reassured you'll feel if vet diagnosis is not so bad , you'll rest easier and know doggie is just a bit under the weather

He still needs to see a vet.

Lethargic, not eating and only drinking when encouraged are all warning signs that something is very wrong.

happymummy2010 · 31/03/2024 14:31

We have just called the vet and made an appointment for 3.30. Now trying to find an Uber. Unfortunately as it's Easter anyone I would normally ask for help is unavailable today.
Will update later. Thanks for all the advice.

OP, I’ve just got back from the emergency vet on Easter Sunday for the exact same symptoms.

Vet found had a very high temperature and has given him an injection to help bring the fever down. If he’s not eating within 24 hours we have to go back for further tests.

The vet also checked his vital statistics, but fortunately they were fine (not dehydrated, despite not having seen him drink) BUT if they weren’t fine he would need to stay in with a drip.

Take your dog.

Our appointment was £410 for 10 minutes and an injection. Sadly not insurance. But worth it for the peace of mind.

My dogs had a similar issues a few months ago. OOOH vet was 100% worth every penny for the pace of mind. Better to spend the money for reassurance than risk your dog.

Hope your dogs okay!

justasking111 · 31/03/2024 16:08

There seems to be a dog bug going around.

fieldsofbutterflies · 31/03/2024 16:12

We've taken ours in with similar symptoms at the weekend before - he needed various injections and medications and even then it took a few days to get him back to normal.

It can be expensive but it will be more expensive if you leave it and he needs to be admitted. Hopefully your appointment went okay Flowers

OrlandointheWilderness · 31/03/2024 16:21

How's he got on @happymummy2010
?

crumblingschools · 31/03/2024 16:26

Hope you get on okay. Our cavalier had similar a few years ago and he had eaten some random bit of plastic (unknown to us) which had caused a blockage. Needed an op but made full recovery
