My 2 year old Cavalier King Charles spaniel was sick a couple of times on Friday evening and has not eaten since then. We have managed to get him to take some water but nothing else. He seemed okay in himself yesterday, but not 100%. Last night he was restless but did manage to sleep.
This morning he seems very lethargic and still won't eat.
I have called the emergency vet number and they are willing to see him (at a large cost !), but said we could also monitor him at home and see if he improves later today and if not take him in later.
Unfortunately we don't drive, so to get him to the emergency vet would involve trying to get an Uber willing to take a dog.

I'm really not sure what to do for the best.

Hello

We are home. The vet thinks he has gastroenteritis.

He was given an injection and they gave us a can of food to try and some paste to add to the food. She said he hopefully will start to feel better in a couple of hours and to take him back tomorrow morning if he still hasn't eaten. She also emptied his anal glands as they were quite full.

In total it cost c.£350 including Ubers. I'm hoping the consultation and injection will be covered by the pet insurance.

Many thanks for all the advice and encouragement to take him to the vet.

I am so pleased that you did go to the Vet, hopefully the injection helps/works.
£350 - yes I think that's ' good ' as I believe my nearest out of hours is £270 just to walk thru the door, so add on the injection and the food I reckon your cost is similar to what it would cost me.

Hope he feels better soon

Glad your dog is OK.
Just wanted to say check the excess on your pet insurance mine is £300 so might not be worth the hassle of a claim.

I had to take mine yesterday as he's got gastroenteritis after I stupidly gave him a drontal wormer (usually he has panacur). He had an anti-emetic injection, some pro-kolin paste, some probiotics and buscopan. Seems I got off lightly with a £120 bill.

Now I’m getting worried. My dog has been sick twice yesterday and twice today, but seems fine in himself - eating and walking as normal.

We were at emergency vet’s on Friday as he’d eaten a hot cross bun (£400!). They induced vomiting then.

Twice episodes of sickness has been after walks so I wondered whether he had just gulped the water down quickly. The other two times was after drinking also. He has also drank water without being sick.

seemed more tired than normal this evening but otherwise fine.

I would get your dog back to the vets ASAP, to be honest.

Continuous vomiting after ingesting a known toxin would really worry me, especially if he's also more tired than usual. I would want bloods and kidney function tests at a minimum.

my dog was sick also very recently, over this weekend.
i gave her boiled chicken
which she ate
and improved.

£350 is a bargain tbh... my last emergency vet visit was £418, to pull off a broken nail, like, literally a ten second with a pair of pliers job 😐

Twice now he’s caught a dew claw on a holiday weekend
