Disturbing new puppy

MamaBanana12 · 28/03/2024 22:03

We have a 11 week old cockerpoo pup, he's settled so well and is no bother during the day. Toileting well, a bit bitey at the moment but nothing out of the ordinary for a pup.

My only issue is that he's in his crate downstairs at night. He sleeps quite well but if my toddler wakes in the night, (poorly at the moment and coughing and just waking super early) me moving around upstairs wakes him and he starts crying & my husband leaves for work at 5.40 we are waking pup and he's then up and ready for the day.

I've been taking him out for a wee but he just won't go back into crate without being really vocal and I don't want to upset him. So I've been then just on the sofa but last night from 3am when my toddler woke I've been on the sofa and I'm just exhausted !!

Any tips?

"Any tips?"
I suppose its a bit late for the tip of dont get a puppy when you have a toddler 😂
Pup will learn to adapt to the family routine, will just take a bit of time. If you're up anyway, I'd be letting him out for a pee and then straight back into crate with minimum fuss.

BirthdayRainbow · 28/03/2024 22:18

Shut the door of the room he is in so can't hear the toddler?

justasking111 · 28/03/2024 22:23

Ignore if it's the middle of the night, he'll soon get the message. Your husband leaving early is a problem though.

MamaBanana12 · 28/03/2024 22:24

Yeah the doors are shut it's just the sound of
Us moving upstairs.

And my toddler is pre schooler age almost and to be fair has slept through since 6 months, just unwell currently.

We've had a dog for 15 years who died last year, just been a long time since a pup. I don't mind getting up it's not pups fault he's always let out to pee.
Considered moving him upstairs or letting him out the crate at that time as he loves to just settle on the sofa or in my slippers but don't want to undo crate work.
(Never crate trained previous dog so it is new to us. She used to sleep in our room

Yeah it's a pain.
He lets him out before he leaves but usually our old dog he'd let her out and she's then run up stairs back into my bed.
So it's just hard to know how to navigate it for pup who's downstairs

I always have puppies in the bedroom and they sleep through beautifully even when we need to get up in the night for the loo etc. I think being downstairs alone after being with mum and litter mates is anxiety inducing for pups so I would pop the crate in your bedroom and see if that helps them settle faster after disturbance.

Thank you for the advice.
Yeah I think I will give this a try. He's such a good boy and has settled so well he just gets a bit upset when woken!
I'll move it upstairs and see if that settles him. Once he's fully house trained I'm ok with him just being upstairs tbh but it just isn't ideal before then!

Good luck and I hope you get some peaceful nights soon. Failing that DH on the sofa downstairs so he doesn’t wake any of you up Grin.

What do you think the difference is between a baby dog and a human baby crying in the night? Should your baby shut up because you’ve put it in a cage and your dog is crying and disturbing it?

If you don't know the difference 🙄

What time do you put the puppy to bed? Just thinking that, actually, 05:40 is a reasonable time for a puppy to wake up anyway if it’s going to bed early. They’re social little things who want their family.

So if it’s been in a crate for 7-8 hours already. It’s not surprising if it wants love/attention?

Yeah fair point. He's goes to bed around 10pm!

Might just see if he would like to potter around rather than go back in crate. I don't mind either way. Will see how he does upstairs

11 weeks is so young to be on his own no wonder he’s crying. It’s good that you’re bringing the crate upstairs he will settle so much faster if he’s with you

fieldsofbutterflies · 29/03/2024 07:49

If he's going to bed at 10pm then I think you're doing well to get him to stay asleep until 5.40 to be honest Grin

Devilshands · 29/03/2024 07:50

Ah! That could be it then, OP! Although puppies sleep 18+hours a day, if he's getting 6-7 hours sleep solidly through the night, then he's probably beyond excited when he hears people! Don't forget that during the day he's only sleep 1-2 hours at a time...

My Golden was the same - total nightmare. If yours is able to hold his bladder, once he's been into the garden you could take him to bed with you? I did that with mine. He'd wake me up at 5AM, I'd let him out to the toilet and then we'd go back to bed for another hour or so. It took a few days of ignoring him once he got into bed, but by about day 3 he understood the routine.

Why's this? My cockapoo pup set her own bedtime of 8pm and sleeps till 6.15. not in a crate though

fieldsofbutterflies · 29/03/2024 07:55

@Cockapoopoopoo because it's incredibly unusual for puppies to sleep for such long periods of time overnight - you're very lucky.

Just to be clear he's only crying once he's been woken up. He's totally fine through the night I don't leave him to cry either, my husband takes him out and then when he leaves I come down so he's not alone once awake!

Aw I know I feel bad it's just very early 🤣 I'll see how he does upstairs and if not maybe bring him in for a snuggle when husband leaves!

Yeah I think this feels a good plan!
He's great overnight no accidents at all only has a pee on his first night. I'm so shocked at that. I set alarms to take him out through the night when we first got him but he was furious with me and just laid on the patio asleep at 2am 🤣🤣

Maybe try a loud white noise machine next to the dog‘s crate? It will help block out the noise during the night and send a signal that it’s still sleep time when your husband leaves for work.

I am going to go against what people say about having your puppy upstairs with you. Your little one will soon be better and puppy will be back to sleeping soundly in crate, you’ve done well with crate training so far, so I would stick to it. We didn’t have our puppy upstairs until he was around 6 months old, he did really well in his crate. Vets advice was not too many stairs until he was older.

InfoComet · 29/03/2024 08:24

When very young ours used to wake just before 6. We were still feeding 4 times a day so we gave breakfast then, went into the garden for the toilet then she'd settle back to sleep on my lap on the sofa. Breakfast got moved to around 7:30 when we moved to feeding 3 times a day (about 16 weeks iirc) and by that stage she was happily sleeping until around that time.
