9 week old puppy just died, need a handhold

I feel so desolate. My husband and I got a beautiful pomsky puppy two weeks ago. He was so clever and gorgeous, and starting to get his own personality. I got a call from my distraught husband while I was at the gym: the poor puppy had thrown up a bit of kibble during training, and then he aspirated it. He choked to death in about a minute , while my husband desperately tried to clear his airways.

Im just broken. We lost our last dog very suddenly earlier this year (he was only six and had a seizure). This puppy was supposed to be our new little guy, who would help us get over our last dog’s death. And now he’s just gone. A puppy isn’t supposed to die. It’s incomprehensible.

Im now massively anxious and panicked thinking something is going to happen to our remaining dog, and I just feel that we are somehow cursed.

I know it’s also irrational but I just keep thinking it’s so unfair. We are experienced , good dog owners - so why did this happen?

I know the dog house is a supportive place, so I just wanted to tell you about my little Enki. I can’t even offer words of advice to other owners to prevent this because the vet said it was a freakish accident. He may have had some undiagnosed condition like a hernia that made him prone to aspirate food. Please can someone tell me this will get better? I’ve never experienced mental pain like this.

I am so, so sorry - what a horrible shock for you, and I can't imagine how distressing it must have been for your poor DH. It's desperately unfair, so soon after your first loss. Thinking of you. Sleep tight, Enki 💔

RIP Enki 🌷

I’m so sorry, absolutely devastating.

Nannyfannybanny · 16/03/2024 20:28

There are some horrible needless post on here. We normally got our puppies at 8 weeks, this last one,was 7 (slouching on the sofa with me) mum stopped feeding them, all were farm bred, and weaned, she was happy to let her go early because we had had so many before. The only one who was different was our Phalene, being a toy breed,he had to be 11 weeks.

I am so sorry for your loss

Both my pups are from KC registered accredited breeders, who show at crufts level and are considered one of the top breeder in the country for their breed and we got both our pups at 8 weeks 🤔

No, but you're talking about age. You said reputable breeders won't let a pup go at 8 weeks.

8 weeks is 8 weeks for most breeds, crossed or not. (except toy breeds where I do believe it's better for them to stay a little longer)

helpyhelperton · 17/03/2024 10:38

For goodness sake - this is NOT the place to post about ethics.

How can anyone come in this thread and not show sympathy is beyond me.

Sending so much love to you both - the puppy was made and you adopted him and gave him love. You have nothing to feel guilty about.

It will hurt so much now, look after each other and neither of you are to blame. You will feel better in time but it's OK to grieve for as long as you need.

Please don't even digest the negative posts - you came here for comfort - it's not a place for anything other than that.

I was specifically referring to this

A statement you made which is simply untrue.

We got all our collies from farms, not fancy breeders, tough stock, we've had 3 dogs live to almost 18.

sonjadog · 17/03/2024 11:15

Eight weeks is normal for every puppy I have come across, both from breeders and from rescues.

I disagree. Discussion of ethics is important, but choosing a thread where someone is distraught over the tragic death of their puppy is inappropriate, self-absorbed and showing you completely lack empathy for others.

JMSA · 17/03/2024 11:50

Oh God, I am so so sorry. You poor things Flowers
My Shih Tzu boy will be 9 years old in May, and I live in dread of this. At least he will be an adult though Sad
Sending hugs and massive sympathies x

But not in a dickhead way.

There are ways and ways.

Youarenotseriouspeople · 17/03/2024 12:15

So sorry to hear this.

We lost our pup aged 1 suddenly and in tragic circumstances it was 18 months ago and although time definitely heals i still feel it now.

Take your time and be kind to yourself 💐

Or makes the point that buying unethical crossbreeds and from bulk breeders is likely to leave you in the position o/p now finds herself in.

surely if one person sees this and realises a Pomski is a ridiculous, unethical cross which is likely to have serious health problems, then we are saving that person the trauma o/p is going through?

OrlandointheWilderness · 17/03/2024 12:39

God above, I'm the first person to advocate not getting designer breeds etc, but there is a time and a place. This is a horrific, devastating incident and the OP will be feeling terrible anyway. No need to make someone feel even worse.
