9 week old puppy just died, need a handhold

I feel so desolate. My husband and I got a beautiful pomsky puppy two weeks ago. He was so clever and gorgeous, and starting to get his own personality. I got a call from my distraught husband while I was at the gym: the poor puppy had thrown up a bit of kibble during training, and then he aspirated it. He choked to death in about a minute , while my husband desperately tried to clear his airways.

Im just broken. We lost our last dog very suddenly earlier this year (he was only six and had a seizure). This puppy was supposed to be our new little guy, who would help us get over our last dog’s death. And now he’s just gone. A puppy isn’t supposed to die. It’s incomprehensible.

Im now massively anxious and panicked thinking something is going to happen to our remaining dog, and I just feel that we are somehow cursed.

I know it’s also irrational but I just keep thinking it’s so unfair. We are experienced , good dog owners - so why did this happen?

I know the dog house is a supportive place, so I just wanted to tell you about my little Enki. I can’t even offer words of advice to other owners to prevent this because the vet said it was a freakish accident. He may have had some undiagnosed condition like a hernia that made him prone to aspirate food. Please can someone tell me this will get better? I’ve never experienced mental pain like this.

I am so sorry ,cant imagine how you must be feeling and poor DH as well.Freak accidents are so common .A lady we met ,whose dog slipped on wrapping paper on the stone floor at Christmas and had to be put down (twisted something in his gut) Be kind to yourself and dont blame anyone

WeeBisom · 16/03/2024 14:27

We've just heard from another vet, and it appears our poor puppy had a congenital condition which caused his throat to swell up and for him to regurgitate food. Apparently absolutely nothing could have been done for him :( It was just one of those random awful things.

So sorry for you all 💐❤

thiswillbedisplayed82 · 16/03/2024 16:36

you got the puppy at 7 weeks

NOT from a reputable breeder that’s for sure

KeenMintCrow · 16/03/2024 17:04

OP you collected this puppy at 7 weeks? Separated from his mother at 7 weeks!!!

This would have been from a puppy farm

Do some people have to put a spoke in,ie regards to age. You are upset, you don't need this. We got our last puppy a border collie,at 7 weeks from a farm where we used to live. The mother had rejected them, stopped feeding. They were weaned, we had had lots of collies before. It's a farm, they cannot hand rear 8 puppies. They were happy we knew what we were doing.

Op I am so very sorry for your loss. It is traumatic losing a pet and especially under such heartbreaking circumstances. Please reach out and share your grief I have found pet loss unbearably hard it’s hard to explain sometimes.

For all those trying to stick a boot in to someone upset and in shock have a long word with yourself. Plus you are incorrect as it happens as the Op clarified she got pup at 8 weeks which is perfectly common practice.

lexi873 · 16/03/2024 17:14

The OP has already been back to say she made a mistake the pup was 10 weeks and she bought it at 8 weeks. Really no need to stick the boot in is there …

This! To the posters above rating about seven weeks, try reading the (not very long) thread before sticking the boot in

8 weeks is still far too young and not a chance a reputable breeder would ah e handed over an 8 weeker

Jesus talk about kicking someone when they’re down. Some of you should have a good look at yourself and the way you’re behaving.

Madwife123 · 16/03/2024 17:23

It’s a pomsky aka a designer crossbreed of 2 totally incompatible breeds. Regardless of the age it was sold at, it wasn’t from an ethical breeder. No ethical person would deliberately cross those breeds. They are very prone to collapsing trachea as well as multiple other heath problems.

@WeeBisom Please if you get another puppy look into the health concerns of these ‘designer’ crossbreeds. Some breeds should never be crossed together!

Nannyfannybanny · 16/03/2024 17:24

It's perfectly normal for dogs to leave the litter at 8 weeks. We got all ours then.

sonjadog · 16/03/2024 17:34

So sorry, OP. What a horrible thing to happen. I lost two dogs within a short period due to different health issues that followed after my much loved Aussie that I had for 13 years. I remember feeling how unfair it was when all I wanted was a new bestfriend to love and then this happened. But losing them was just bad luck, just as this was just a very unfortunate event that happened with your puppy. This is the hardest part of dog owning, losing them is so, so hard. Be kind to yourselves over the next few weeks.

It used to be normal to get your puppy at 6 weeks. We got one at that age, which I now think is too young, but 8-10 weeks is utterly fine.

There are some bloody brutal posters on this board. There is just no need for it. Some people excuse it with, 'Well, it's about dogs, they get upset' but I'm on several FB pages that focus on dogs and none of them is like this.

OP, I'm so sorry this happened to you. Puppies are so small and trusting.

WeeBisom · 16/03/2024 18:04

Sorry for the confusion, I said he was 9 weeks old but he had literally just turned 10 weeks. This was my mistake , I was so used this past week telling the vet and puppy classes he was 9 weeks. Yes we got him at 8 weeks old. All of our previous dogs have been rehomed at 8 weeks (except for one who we got at 12 weeks). I understand the importance of pups not being taken from their mums until they are the right age, and wouldn’t get a puppy at 7 weeks.

The breeder is fully registered and gets regular inspections. I do understand the controversy around designer breeds, but he was from a good breeder who has been breeding for years. He didn’t die from a collapsed trachea.

I didn’t mean to make people angry or upset with my post , just wanted a bit of support. I just felt terrible and wanted to share. I’ve had some really good insight from people, good advice about feeding treats, and pet first aid, so thanks for that.

OP posts:
Madwife123 · 16/03/2024 18:23

@WeeBisom Sorry but no good breeder thinks crossing a Husky and a Pomeranian is a good idea! The size difference alone tells you it’s a really unethical thing to do. The health issues associated with this breed confirms this.

Being registered with the council means nothing. Many puppy farms are registered. They also do not inspect regularly. You can check this yourself on the licensing terms. Being licensed means you breed a lot of litters so actually being council licensed generally means a breeder you want to avoid. A breeder that breeds for health rather than money generally has very few litters and NEVER crosses vastly incompatible breeds for profit.

VillageOnSmile · 16/03/2024 19:02

Could people stop going on about the breed being unethical etc…?

The OP started this thread needing support after loosing two dogs in close successions.
Maybe stick to the thread and the OP issue.

It’s not the right time nor place to raise issues about dog farming and ethical breeding. You can do that on another thread.

VillageOnSmile · 16/03/2024 19:03

@WeeBisom I’m really sorry.
Im not a dog person but how upset you are about the accident is obvious from your posts.

Take some time to grieve for that dog. It’s such a sad thing.
