Feel like the worst dog mum ever tonight 😭
Had an evening out tonight, 7-10pm. Couldn't get out of it and seeing as he 99.9% of the time is very settled, he must've just 'known' tonight. He'll normally go to bed just after 7 and that's it for him.
Had around 25+ notifications of crying which I couldn't hear as there was live music on.
I got home just after 10 and let him out the crate, normally at 10 when I wake him for a wee he's as dopey and sleepy as anything but not tonight! Clearly happy to see us but obviously has been super anxious and now wanting to chew his bone furiously.
I've listened to the notifications, just before I got home there was a proper howl, now I'm broken!

One of the notifications, he cries then makes a sound like he's saying 'where's mama?'!
Seriously - I might try and post the audio!

Could there have been something going on with neighbours or outside that got him worried?
I would also feel awful; at the moment I feel bad leaving her at all despite no evidence of distress, but it's early days for us.
I leave the radio on to mask random noises that might bother her.
Have you left him again since then?
Hope it was a one off!
Best wishes

@Cavalierchaos
Good to hear about the house training success!

Fern can be easy on the lead if it's just us, but as soon as any human or dog approaches she is bonkers!
I just do my best.. if I have the best treats on me sometimes she'll "come away" nicely but mostly I'm just hanging on to stop her bothering those who don't want to meet a puppy.

Venusflytart · 18/05/2024 08:34

@Yllasin I have the same issue with Moxie, he does somersaults and backflips 😂. He is also quite large for a 6 month whippet at 12 kilos so it takes some muscle to keep him in check sometimes.

Haha, at 5.7kg Fern doesn't take a lot of strength but I wish I could put her in a collar rather than a harness, she gets a bit red around the front legs. But in a collar I'm fearful for neck damage while she's such a baby.

Venusflytart · 18/05/2024 09:26

@Yllasin they do special whippet collars perhaps a small size would work for fern? I have moxie in a halti harness plus a wide collar and that seems to work. the collar is for grabbing him sometimes as he is slippery! adding a fairly useless picture.

People don’t reply to individual posts unless they have something useful to say about it. Unless you have asked a question, you are being treated like everyone else.

I've just looked back at your last post and I had clicked the thanks button, which was acknowledging your post?

Yes, I have a little whippet collar, she's still too small for it although it's 8-10"! Do you think once she grows into it, it wouldn't hurt her neck when she's being a twit? 😆

My little dickhead is 11 month old tomorrow 😬😬😬
He's definitely looking like a dog not a puppy anymore and I don't know whether to feel sad or not 😂

Hey! Sorry you felt that, have to say I also don't tend to post unless I'm asking something or can help somebody else (not very often as I'm still early on in the journey and not hugely experienced)
Lovely looking pup though, thanks for the photo 😊

JamieJ93 · 18/05/2024 12:37

Just to say,
I wasn't being arsey with my post,
Just feeling a little frustrated with Milo and shouldn't have taken it out on the group

JaneIves · 18/05/2024 12:50

@Yllasin We are working on leaving when awake, very short 5/10 minutes max. We do this in the kitchen as we have a gate and a mat on the floor for him in there.
I've left him asleep in his crate several times knowing I'll be a max of 1.5hrs, this was the first time I'd left him during the evening. I'd left the tv on but I guess he knew there were no other 'home' sounds, like us talking or moving around. We tend to cover his crate completely for naps and the first part of night time sleep as he's just too nosey and won't settle. We leave the front uncovered after his late evening wee.
It was a learning curve for sure, but no lasting effects from him, he still goes into his crate!

ahh bless her!! i can't wait to get out and about on walks !!

userxx · 18/05/2024 21:10

@JaneIves you’ll get used to the howling, borders are howly little buggers! Doesn’t really make it an enjoyable night out does it when you’re stressing about the pup at home 🙈 nothing kills a social life more than puppy guilt!

Cavalierchaos · 18/05/2024 22:17

He did a poo in the kitchen today. Grr.

CurlsnSunshinetime4tea · 19/05/2024 01:47

oh @JamieJ93 i do look at the posts daily but have no words of wisdom as i try to navigate Finley's puppyhood.
like @Cavalierchaos we still have the occasional puddles in the house and the fact that his hint to toilet is us CARRYING him to the pen is a bit worrisome as he's getting heavy!!
the biting is way less and my hands have healed as have dh.
we've spotted some digging tendencies which is a non negotiable for us and hopefully we don't come down too hard on his natural instincts.
so far we love his gentle nature.
we had an urgent vet visit though as i spotted a lump on his upper lip, size of a cherry pit and rock hard immovable.
i also noted his whiskers were insanely curly and stiff like wire, the vet had never seen such a thing and we thought if it was still present come the time to neuter we would explore it surgically, in the mean time trialed antibiotics. for an area that did not appear red or inflamed.

then one day i decided to explore the area and the wire bristle whiskers pulled out so easily and were at least 6 times the length of the exposed whisker. little 1/4 inch whiskers pulled out at least 2 full inches long incredibly easily...no tugging necessary!! the area is now much smaller and only a few more whiskers to try to pull.

Lougle · 19/05/2024 08:56

@CurlsnSunshinetime4tea we carried Hazel to the pen for a long time. It didn't cause an issue. They adapt. For ages Hazel would let herself out of the cat flap. In the last couple of weeks she has taken to poking her head out of it, so that we hear it and let her out.

Any advice welcome on this - although I suspect I may just have to ride it.

We moved BooDog to a crate in our room about 8 weeks ago (from being on a sofabed with me downstairs!). At first he slept through to about 6. Got up for pee then would hop up on the bed and do another hour or so. Over the past couple of weeks he's started waking at around 4. I take him out to the toilet, then he'll go back into his crate for a couple of hours. I cannot work out why he suddenly needs this night toilet stop, I haven't changed anything.

Ilovemyshoes · 20/05/2024 10:49

Hi I’m a first time poster. I have a six month old springer and I have the same problem. He sleeps in a create in our room and is now waking once or twice in the night and I’m taking him out for a pee. He has always peed the moment he touches grass so I’m not sure whether he needs it or not. He whines though and then stops for a couple of hours after he’s been out. It’s very tiring! We also have a very elderly Jack Russell who sleeps on our bed so I naively thought he would sleep in our room in the long term without a crate. Any help would be great, thanks.

tizwozliz · 20/05/2024 11:39

@BackToLurk - it might be that he's waking and then deciding he needs the toilet rather than waking because he needs the toilet if that makes sense. So lighter mornings, birds etc. could be waking him

LER83 · 20/05/2024 20:08

Can I join? We brought home our 14 week old sprocker spaniel on Saturday, and despite reading all the books, I don't have a clue what I am doing! We have a 3 year old cocker spaniel already, but we got him when he was 10 months old and he had been incredibly well trained in the house! Puppies are a whole new world! I feel like I'm instilling bad habits already!

JamieJ93 · 22/05/2024 15:35

Hello everyone! 😊
Milo stayed over at my mum's last night (very settled as we come here alot) it was our 5th wedding anniversary yesterday so it was a good break tbh.
Yesterday, I don't know what it was but I had a moment where I looked at Milo and I thought - he's going to be a very good dog.
He has been behaved impeccably overnight for my mum and has been today.
Has anyone else had progress with their dogs?
I have been feeling like a failure for the full 9 months since we have had him due to the various up and downs.
My mum was showing me a picture of when he was 13 weeks old. He was such a tiny baby 💗

Anyone else's toilet training go out the window when it's raining? My puppy absolutely refuses to go outside. But when it's dry, all good...
