We have a whippet bedlington cross @Venusflytart they are so chilled

Yllasin · 09/03/2024 12:19

@Venusflytart
My pup is whippet/IG, smallest of 10 and 10 and 1/2 weeks. Latest weight 3.25kg. Fern is her name.
I had whippet/Bedlingtons in the past, my parents had whippet brothers and I walked a whippet as cinnamon trust volunteer before getting Fern.
Ooh the decisions and responsibility seem so much this time for some reason.

@PaddingtonsHat what a beauty!

Thanks- the cuteness gets her out of trouble far too often

Venusflytart · 09/03/2024 12:37

@Yllasin what a cutie! She's so small and dainty! Mine is Just over 8 kilos and gained a kilo in the last two weeks. He's in a growth spurt and will be a big boy although he doesn't seem to eat very much.

perhaps whippets are not that food driven like some other breeds?

Venusflytart · 09/03/2024 12:39

PointerParty · 09/03/2024 10:40

We have been doing blankets over the top but her favourite thing is jumping onto the top of the crate (getting less frequent with training but not completely eradicated) so I need something a bit more snug!

If you can sew, it should not be too difficult to get some waterproof (tent) fabric and create something yourself? I plan to make my boy's wardrobe (whippet jackets) as well 😀

Ours isn’t. He’s 16 months now and weighs 8.1kg. We think he’s done growing.

My deerhound was never food driven either.

But both of these were smallest in the litter, so not sure if that has an impact.

Our 10 week old who’s a Whippet bedlington x greyhound was the bigger litter mate and is currently very treat focused. Dinner not so much

I will keep weighing him as he looks very clumsy (big ears, stumpy nose, and big floppy feet), so I think he'll grow a bit more. He likes carrots and leaves in the garden...

JaneIves · 09/03/2024 14:02

My 16 week old BT has been waking earlier and earlier, we cover the sides of the crate but not the front, so he looks out facing our back patio doors. We do draw the curtains at night but wondering if the chink if light that gets through is waking him?
Does anyone else completely cover their crate?

New tax for new post, obvs.

I see a few owners with older pups on here so I'll sneak in. Unluckypup is 15 months now. We went through a major recall regression that we are thankfully on the other side of. My current worry is that she's shown some resource guarding outside of the house that has come out of nowhere. Once barked at a dog who came bowling over when I got out her high value recall sausages, and twice has barked/air snapped when drinking outside of the house and interrupted by another dog also wanting a drink. All after running around playing, so highly aroused I guess. I'm not sure if I should be concerned or not. I'm going to be careful to not get food/water out around other dogs going forwards.

Our bedlington whippets weighed 8.4 and 9.5, people never stopped thinking they were puppies.

We used an old curtain and zip tied it to the crate bars. We found that she didn't like being covered though, and preferred the crate without it.

I think re. Resource guarding, it's really important to understand that it's about what the dog thinks is important, not what we think. Hazel loves a carrot and we can sit with her while she eats it, but when I gave her a frozen carrot she took it away to a quiet corner so we couldn't get near it.

Unluckycat1 · 09/03/2024 18:24

Thanks @Lougle unluckypup does take her good snacks (chicken feet etc) to her bed to eat. I've never experienced her resource guarding at home, but we just leave her alone when it comes to food. Water resource guarding seems quite uncommon, so I'm wondering if I've caused it by taking her bowl away too quickly when out. I often give her a drink at the end of a run/play then throw the remaining water away and pack up. Maybe she's not as finished with it as I presumed.

It might be resource guarding, but it could also be just not being comfortable with another dog in her face.

As well as avoiding other dogs at watering time, could you wait until you think she's finished, then get her attention and throw her a yummy treat a few feet away, so that she moves away from the bowl before you pick it up?

Milo is driving me insane with his barking recently,
Especially at 6am in the morning! It's not that he wants to go out for the toilet it's that he wants to terrorise me and my husband and jump all over me.
Even during the afternoon when hes having down time in his crate, he's barking just because he can, I do ignore him most of the time ( not in the morning just incase he is very desperate) but the other times he just wants to be near me 24/7.
I love cuddles but I can't be with him all the time as I just need a breather sometimes.
His mental needs and physical needs are met ( in terms of excersise and sniffing games)
I am exhausted, I love him, he's my best friend (no real life friends) but sometimes he just gets on my nerves, is that normal?
Any advice what else I can be doing with him,
Never had a puppy like this.

Inspired by Crufts, I’d like to start early with hand signals along with voice commands. Is the standard for hand signals global/regional/or a bit to each their own? 48 hrs till puppy arrival.

We use hand signals alongside cues. I'm not sure there is an international code. Lots of people do their own instinctive movements that become signals.

I can't wait for when taking the dogs for a walk doesn't involve a change of clothes!

Unluckycat1 · 11/03/2024 08:48

Thanks again @Lougle I'll try something like that. I can't imagine her ever barking or snapping at me, but that's probably an overly naive belief.

@CurlsnSunshinetime4tea hand signals are great. Like Lougle said, ours have been instinctive. Adding a beckoning signal to 'come' was helpful with recall, especially as I'm not a big fan of shouting her name out. Though a whistle might be better, I do slightly regret not whistle training (I just know I'd forget to take it out half the time).

@tizwozliz right? That said, while it's still endlessly muddy out there, that we're no longer having to wade through newly formed rivers where paths used to be feels positive

PointerParty · 11/03/2024 18:35

@CurlsnSunshinetime4tea if you plan to do something specific with your dog then you may need to use certain hand signals, otherwise just pick what works for you. My older GSP does gun dog training where "correct" hand signals are quite important. She also does agility where the hand signals are a bit looser. I rarely use verbal commands for agility, she follows my hands and feet.

@Unluckycat1 it's never too late for whistle training! I have whistles everywhere (glove box, treat pouch, one on my keys, coat pocket). They're all acme 211.5. The whistle cuts through so much noise, I couldn't be without it.

@tizwozliz the mud is really getting to me now. Apart from being covered in it on walks, they have started tearing round a patch of mud in the garden, then smearing it everywhere outside and inside several times a day.

After lots of discussions with DH we have decided to try medication with pup before we speak to anyone about rehoming. I want to feel I've tried everything, this is her home. Pup had her appointment with the vet today after the full behaviourist report came through. The vet agreed with the vet behaviourist that her gait looked a bit bowed and stiff, and ruling out pain should be step one. So she's starting a 2 week pain trial to see if her reactivity improves. She's been given quite a high dose of gabapentin so I think she'll be zonked initially... and it will be hard to make judgements about reactivity if she's wiped out. I didn't know how much she was getting until we were in reception and the vet was already in another consult. They're capsules so difficult to split, I'll try for a few days and then ask for a lower dose if she's too sleepy. I feel quite sad about giving her something that's going to space her out initially, but if she's in pain then we need to work towards making it better.

CurlsnSunshinetime4tea · 11/03/2024 20:04

Thank you for the info on the hand signals @Lougle , @Unluckycat1 , and @PointerParty .
Were pretty excited over here with tomorrow very late evening being puppy arrival time.
He's (Finley) is an 8 week old Airedale pup and will be joining a 13 yr old Airedale and a 14 yr of Tibetan Spaniel.
13 yrs ago we had low learning expectations of the Airedale (based on what we had read about the breed) but found over time the old fellow to have good recall and good knowledge of basic commands so we are raising the bar on this new addition.

tizwozliz · 12/03/2024 17:08

I should be tidying the kitchen but I'm trapped 😊

CurlsnSunshinetime4tea · 12/03/2024 19:28

11.5 hours till the new pup arrives in our home. about 30 minutes until dh meets with the co-breeder for the hand over.
armed with cooked liver and my trusty whistle i took the two older ones for a good off leash hike. they were very well behaved and are probably unprepared for the chaos of what's to come...

PaddingtonsHat · 12/03/2024 20:06

@CurlsnSunshinetime4tea how exciting! Where is your pup coming from sounds like quite a trek

CurlsnSunshinetime4tea · 12/03/2024 20:48

@PaddingtonsHat from a breeder in Winnipeg Shawndee Airedale and Russel Terriers. We’re located in BC, so 2 hr time difference, coupled with us not living in a major city so only 2 flights per day with the carrier (4 a day total). He comes in on the last flight of the day at 23:50. All the flights are short 1-2 hour. The Calgary layover is 6-8 hrs so low stress.
Ears set just yesterday.
