Tips on collecting urine sample from small female dog, please

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 24/02/2024 11:12

Vets and YouTube suggest a collecting vessel that is narrow enough to slide between her back legs, short enough not to touch her when I slide it under, and long enough to collect something given that I can't see when it's in the right place,. Given how low she squats, and she's less than 10kg anyway, finding something suitable is a bit of a challenge.

I appreciate that vets can get samples in other ways, but regular urine tests are likely to be part of her future so we need a solution I can manage at home.

All ideas welcome, thank you from both of us!

I have a collapsible rubber drinks bowl. It has ridged sides so it collapses flat for travel. It is now v useful for collecting urine, as I can squeeze the sides in to make it sort of boat shaped. Of course I don't use it for anything else now!

Small tupperware or take away box?

donteatthedaisies0 · 24/02/2024 11:19

I can only suggest a shopping trip to find something suitable like B&M something like that . We had a shallow fairly narrow kitchen plastic dish that was suitable .

lifebeginsaftercoffee · 24/02/2024 11:30

Tupperware box.

Meezer · 24/02/2024 11:31

We do this regularly and for our dog this works every time...
1- use plastic container - old chinese takeaway plastic boxes are perfect as they have low sides (I keep them all now for this purpose)
2- in the morning, put dog on lead to take them out in the garden for their 1st wee
3- when they crouch put the box in the appropriate place... (!)
4- when done, let dog off, put the lid on the box ready for vet.

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 24/02/2024 11:47

Thanks so much for the quick replies.

All the plastic boxes I have are too tall to get underneath her without touching. A pity because I have a collection going back 20 years and I might at last have found a use for them. But I have high hopes for the collapsible water bowl.

Those of you who are practiced at this, any tips on the 'appropriate place' or is it just trial and error for that particular dog? She's so low to the ground I can't see anything at all.

Maybe different as i hd to do it with male dog but old plastic chinese container, waited till I saw a dog cock his leg to a tree knowing my dog would have to pee over the pee and once he went near i put the container down. Et voila! #

ohdamnitjanet · 24/02/2024 11:48

I’ve done this with a plastic takeaway container, just slide it under!

donteatthedaisies0 · 24/02/2024 11:50

Slide it under from behind . If your box is at least a few inches long you'll get the sample .

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 24/02/2024 12:09

Thanks all, takeaway containers are much too tall though. If the collapsible pot doesn't work I think I'll see if I can find a narrow windowsill plant tray.

Shallow tuppawear box. Do it first thing so don't let her out for a morning wee until you're ready and be prepared to do a sliding dive like a pro-goal keeper.

donteatthedaisies0 · 24/02/2024 12:39

Make sure go for something shallow , long length wise and short width wise . Shove under from behind , and yeah do it morning so she is bursting and wont be distracted by shoving container under there .

I found that my girls squat low so the squishy bowl is the only thing that works. it's also very quiet, you can shape it to suit without it making any crackly noises (my girls get shy about it all). I always sterilise it with Milton between uses and ensure I dry it thoroughly and completely after sterilising. If you leave any sterilising fluid in it, it can kill any bacteria in the wee sample and it becomes useless to the Vet. Hope this helps. I've tried all sorts, and a collapsible bowl works best. (Also if your girl is reluctant and needs to go for a walk to wee, it's easy to carry the bowl with the clip and pour it into a sample tube when done)

Whiskybusiness · 24/02/2024 12:48

Small dog person here.

I’ve found that the container her wet food comes in to be the perfect size. Maybe 3/4” deep at most.

I’ve also fashioned a low, narrow trough shaped container from tin foil folded over a few times so it’s a bit more sturdy. You need to pour the sample straight into something else though.

I’ve also used the small rectangular Tupperware from the green lidded Ikea set if you know the one I mean. Desperate times 😂

But honestly, her food container works best for us. Look at options in the supermarket if your dog doesn’t usually eat wet food.

it’s all in the timing. As she starts to squat down, just slide it on under. First wee of the day and she’s so desperate she doesn’t care!

TimeIhadaNightCapwithSanta · 24/02/2024 12:51

Can you get her to go in a specific spot? If so, could you half bury a receptical or somehow raise the sides (paving slabs?).

Sorry if this is a daft idea.

MadamVastra · 24/02/2024 12:51

My pug gets so low I have to use the lid from Tupperware and it catches in the groove

Mum5net · 24/02/2024 12:56

Our Dog is 10kg and we had to do one last week. We used the LID of the box. Scooted it underneath at right moment. Then used syringe to decant into container. 😀

It sounds like you'll be better off with a lid of some sort. I would give her a treat when you are successful and she will hopefully learn to do on command. Or you could cut down a plastic milk bottle and smooth off the edges.

Mum5net · 24/02/2024 13:01

@repopupieres cross posted
pop her on a short lead

Yyfandes · 24/02/2024 13:08

One thing I found helped too, is to tape your container to a garden cane so you don't distract them from weeing by bending down next to them as they wee.

christmascalypso · 24/02/2024 13:16

My vet gave me something designed specially for this. It was very easy - just waited until she squatted and then slid it under her! Then poured into bottle they gave me .

Overthinking22 · 24/02/2024 13:34

You could buy a kidney dish from Amazon?

SnaccidentsHappen · 24/02/2024 14:39

I've heard people use a ladle

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 24/02/2024 15:04

You are a seriously inventive lot! I'm sure one of these ideas will work. Thank you.
