Concerns about neighbour's dog

New neighbours who seem pleasant enough. They have concreted the small back garden and 2 days ago a small kennel appeared.
Saw the dog yesterday..it seems to be an American bully with cropped ears. It was in the kennel all day and overnight. No walk. The family was inside all day...no interaction with the dog at all.
The yard is now full of dog shit which isn't being cleared up.
Is it normal for a dog to be outside all the time???

OP posts:

@abeautifulmess1234 because they are animals and animals belong outside.

CatSighs · 17/02/2024 16:58

@bingoringo4 but dogs are pack animals and should not be kept in solitary confinement, without their humans or other dogs for company. If somebody chooses to keep an animal as a pet, they have an obligation to meet its needs (social as well as physical), wouldn't you agree?

If they wanted an outside pet, rabbits or guinea pigs would have been a better choice.

Yeah I said I have 3 and they all live outside. Maybe read my comments before jumping to conclusions?

Also I know loads of people who have one dog and keep it outside. Maybe ops neighbours going to get another to keep it company. Personally o couldn't care less what others do.

But why would you get a dog if you aren't going to let it inside?

In lots of cultures, dogs are outdoor animals. They only come inside at night or during really bad weather - otherwise they live outside year-round.

While I don't think the dog in the OP is being very well cared for, I don't think some of the judgements on "outdoor dogs" on here are very fair. Lots of dogs absolutely thrive outside.

Lots of dogs are quite happy living alone and aren't particularly interested in the company of other dogs. I also know of dogs who live indoors with others who actively choose to take themselves off outside away from the others.

bingoringo4 · 17/02/2024 17:36

@lifebeginsaftercoffee totally agree with this. One of mine is a cocker spaniel. She has no desire to spend anytime what so ever with the others. She prefers to be an only dog 🤦🏻‍♀️ where the other two like to cuddle up and play she will be found in her bed enjoying her own company.

I walk a border collie who's exactly the same. There's three dogs in the home and every time I go to collect them, the other two are indoors and he's outside by himself - normally in the pouring rain Grin

He's actually very tolerant of other dogs on walks but just prefers not to be around them if possible, lol.

That may be true, but at least these dogs are choosing to take themselves off. Whereas the poor dog in OP's now-deleted photos was sitting by the patio doors and appeared to be looking for company.

Dogs that thrive alone outside are usually guardian breeds with thick coats, bred over many generations to guard the flock (eg Pyrenees mountain dogs). I'm not a bully fan by any means, but I do know that they are usually very attached to their humans so don't do well being left alone day and night. Also, as stated previously, they simply don't have thick enough coats to be outside all the time.

lifebeginsaftercoffee · 17/02/2024 17:55

@CatSighs yep, and I have said (multiple times now) that I don't agree with how the dog in the OP is being kept.

But the thread was descending into general criticism of outdoor dogs and I really don't think that's fair. Keeping dogs the way we do in the UK is very much a cultural thing.

I think it might be you who needs to read my comments before jumping to conclusions! Clearly, I was talking about OP's neighbours ("they"), not you...

bingoringo4 · 17/02/2024 11:05

That's a pocket bully so doesn't need to be muzzled. They also don't need lots of walks.

As for being outside. I have 3 dogs that live outside. Mine are in outhouses tbf not a wooden kennel but there is no law to say dogs cant live outside. If they are fed and watered and have shelter that is enough.

Maybe stop being a busy body.

There’s a difference between a working dog
who lives outside and gets stimulation from work and a dog who’s cooped up in a kennel with no exercise, stimulation or human interaction.
It’s precisely these conditions which cause frustration and dog attacks. It’s down to bad owners.
To get a dog to neglect and ignore indicates the owners are shit human beings or just plain stupid. Too lazy to even clean up the dog shit or take the dog for a short walk. People like that shouldn’t have animals.

Definately report to RSPCA and environmental health.

Poor dog.Their innocent lives are such a lottery. How horrific to end up with an owner like that !

Absolutely this.

I can understand working dogs being kept outside (some even prefer it if they're hardy breeds), but purely pet dogs should be in the home with their family, many of them live limited enough lives as it is so shoving them outside is extremely unfair, especially when they're surrounded by their shit.

Eskarinaogg · 03/12/2024 21:04

I have a similar situation. My neighbour has a small dog. He's got no shelter. Outside all weathers. They walk him and feed him. But, hearing it wimper all night is heartbreaking.
