Concerns about neighbour's dog

AuntieMarys · 17/02/2024 09:18

New neighbours who seem pleasant enough. They have concreted the small back garden and 2 days ago a small kennel appeared.
Saw the dog yesterday..it seems to be an American bully with cropped ears. It was in the kennel all day and overnight. No walk. The family was inside all day...no interaction with the dog at all.
The yard is now full of dog shit which isn't being cleared up.
Is it normal for a dog to be outside all the time???

Poor thing , why have a dog and treat it like that , makes me mad 😡

lifebeginsaftercoffee · 17/02/2024 11:36

AuntieMarys · 17/02/2024 11:31

This is a tiny kennel..it can't turn round in it.

Unfortunately there's no size requirements when it comes to things like this - especially as the dog isn't locked in so can technically come outside, move around and go back in IYSWIM.

I know it's upsetting to see but legally speaking it is acceptable, sadly.

Beautyfadesdumbisforever · 17/02/2024 11:49

There is nothing illegal in what they are doing. Despite ear cropping being illegal no one seems bothered about it probably because it’s difficult to prove who did it and it’s not illegal to buy a dog with already cropped ears.
if they have newly bought an adult dog which they don’t seem interested in I wonder if they are intending to use it for breeding.
sorry none of that will make you feel any better all you can do is keep an eye on it.

I'd be more worried for the neighbour on the other side. The fence between them looks scarily flimsy. I mean, that's an XL isn't it?

RicePuddingWithCinnamon · 17/02/2024 12:02

Ugggh his ears aren’t just cropped they are completely sliced off. Disgusting. Owners that do it always mention ‘medical reasons’ but that’s bullshit.

CockSpadget · 17/02/2024 12:04

That yard is not full of shit, there’s none on the pics you posted.
but the poor dog is an abomination. It clearly hasn’t been got as a pet, so they are either looking after it for someone, or going to breed it.

No looks like a pocket bully not covered by the current legislation. There's as height requirement for an xl that this one looks too small and square for based on the photo

The ear cropping is so sad. It drives me mad that it's illegal but that so few people take notice. Not all the dogs I see with cropped wars can come from abroad :( I was a real fan of nicola Adams until her cropped ear dog

There are 14 pieces of it. That's a lot to me!!! Definitely theirs.

From the photos, it doesn't even come close to meeting the height requirements for an XL bully, so it won't need a muzzle.

It looks like one of those awful "exotic bullies" that are so deformed they can barely move.

True but once that type of dog gets their teeth stuck into you, its hard to get them off.

possibly they have a reason to leave the dog out as they work and or have young children and dont have time to look after it

I'd be more concerned about the dog entering our garden

OP - just hope your next door does not read these forums

lifebeginsaftercoffee · 17/02/2024 12:20

That doesn't mean it needs a muzzle or that it should be reported to the police though.

I think people need to remember what the law is as I've seen a lot of posts recently about unmuzzled, legal dogs and people recommending the police - they won't do anything and it's just a total waste of resources.

Fraaahnces · 17/02/2024 12:21

People who do that to a dog’s ears should have the same thing done to them!

No. It's way too small and completely the wrong shape.

Galeforcewindatmywindow · 17/02/2024 12:42

Environmental health will be bothered about the shit.. And so should rspca. Criteria is a clean place to live... Keep a diary and photos op. Def report the cropping to the police..

IsEveryUserNameBloodyTaken · 17/02/2024 13:01

Poor dog, not an XL.
Think it is one of the next breeds loads are going for and as someone else said exotic bully.
Health problems galore look at the state of it.
Shit breeders and as you can see shit owners.
Sadly nothing will be done by authorities about the ears.
Yes it’s illegal but there are so many butchered ears on dogs ….all with the excuse they were brought from abroad or they rescued it like that…all bollocks of course.
What is the fucking point of that so called kennel.
What even is the point of having a dog and leaving it outside all the time.

It's an American Bully by the looks of it.

Unless OP can prove the cropping was done by the current owners the police won't do anything.

It's not illegal to own a dog with cropped ears.

Thank you.

Is the property rented, I'm guessing it is.
If, so contact housing if council, or letting agent if rented privately

If I lived next door to something like what you have seen, I'd be more fearful of the dog coming over and the smells in the warmer weather

No it's a privately owned house.

I agree with this. Document it thoroughly with pictures and video evidence for a week and report the shit to EH.

The smell will be horrendous in the summer.

I’m really glad growing up none of my neighbours had dogs as I loved playing in my garden and that smell would have me staying in. Although obviously not all dog owners are this dirty - I’m sure some clean it up immediately.

bingoringo4 · 17/02/2024 11:05

That's a pocket bully so doesn't need to be muzzled. They also don't need lots of walks.

As for being outside. I have 3 dogs that live outside. Mine are in outhouses tbf not a wooden kennel but there is no law to say dogs cant live outside. If they are fed and watered and have shelter that is enough.

Maybe stop being a busy body.

But why would you get a dog if you aren't going to let it inside?

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 17/02/2024 13:56

My neighbours are otherwise lovely people, but have a very large dog and artificial grass. They also leave the dogshit to build up before going out and picking it up - the smell over the fence in summer is horrific! But they don't go out there much, they're not gardeners, and so they don't realise how bad the smell is.

Hopefully, OP, as the weather starts to warm up, your neighbours might want barbecues or to sit out in their garden, which might draw their attention to how bad the shit problem is. Otherwise, as with my neighbours, there's nothing you can do, apart from grit your teeth and hope that the fly problem they will have will provoke them to clear up, as soon as they want the windows open.

CatSighs · 17/02/2024 14:08

I think having a bully breed living outside in a kennel in all weathers is a welfare concern. They have very short, thin coats, so your neighbour's dog will really suffer when the temperature drops. So I think you do have grounds for reporting it to the RSPCA, because I don't believe the shelter is adequate for this dog (it would be fine for a border collie etc with a thicker coat).

Also, the photos you posted are very identifying, if any of the neighbour's happen to be Mumsnetters. I'd ask for them to be removed if I were you.
