Sorry, this is a sad one.
My old whippet 14+3 is on max meds for joint pain and has cognitive dysfunction. To stop him barking all night, we’ve been carrying him upstairs to sleep with me in the spare bed. He is no longer able to find the back door when he needs a wee, but I recognise the signs and can guide him out. His back legs give way if he stands still. We took The dreadful decision and have booked our lovely vet to come to the house tomorrow.
Today, he seemed to have a new lease of life, wolfing his food down and practically trotting along on our little walk.
I feel sick with the responsibility of choosing his end. Do we stick with our decision and see him off whilst he seems happy, or grasp for a little more time and put ourselves through this process again.
Thank you for reading.

Honestly if I were you I would stick with plan heartbreaking though it is. You know yourself that he's just had a little surge but that's unlikely to last, I so feel for you, the hardest decision 💔

itsmyp4rty · 24/01/2024 18:02

I think it's time OP. He might have the occasional good day but it sounds like the bad days are really very bad. I think it's the kindest thing.

equinoxprocess · 24/01/2024 18:08

Kindly, I think this is just you grasping for a way to avoid losing him. Enjoying one meal doesn't represent good quality of life in the face of everything else described.

Letting him go before his life descends to 100% suffering is an act of love and kindness. Don't torment yourself. 💐

Noseyoldcow · 24/01/2024 18:12

Could he be rallying just before it gets worse? I'd go ahead with the appointment. And I think you have all our sympathy.

Pashazade · 24/01/2024 18:15

Stick with your decision. He isn't going to get better. A happy last day is a massive bonus, don't prolong things. You know you've made the right decision however awful it feels.

Secondguess · 24/01/2024 18:17

Better a day early than an hour too late.
It's clear that you cherish your lovely boy and you'll have no doubt done everything before you came to make the decision to book the appointment. Keep the appointment, feed him his favourite things, cuddle him and keep him from deteriorating.

I am so sad for you. A dog's only flaw is that they don't live long enough for us.

Windymcwindyson · 24/01/2024 18:17

We chose a day and stuck to it....
You absolutely are doing the best for your ddog.

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 24/01/2024 18:19

I'm sorry but it would be cruel to put it off. As a human equivalent of a 98 year old what would you choose to happen if you were in its position?

HoHoHoliday · 24/01/2024 18:19

You've made the correct choice. This is just nature taking its natural course. You'll often find an old tree will burst out new leaves before it dies. A person will often seem to have a burst of energy before they die. It's the same with animals. Your beautiful boy has reached his end - his legs give way, he can't make his own way to toilet, he's distressed without you at night. It's time to let him go peacefully and comfortably, in his home, with you holding him. You're giving him a good ending, it's the correct choice.
Though I understand it feels like the worst thing in the world. Sending love ❤️

RudolfsLeftToe · 24/01/2024 18:21

I’d follow the saying, it’s better do it a day too early than a day too late.
It is such a heartbreaking decision but you don’t want his pain to carry on or get worse and if you change your mind you could end up in a situation where he’s in horrendous pain while you wait for the vet to become available, it would be so traumatic for all involved.
I’m so so sorry OP, I hope you’re ok.

Justkeepingplatesspinning · 24/01/2024 19:58

I would stick to your plan. It sounds as though he's having a good day but overall he's losing quality of life bit by bit. It's a hard decision and I really feel for you.

Secondguess · 25/01/2024 13:26

Thinking of you today 💐

Motorina · 25/01/2024 14:37

You've made the right decision. Far, far better he have a good last day than a bad one.

I'm sorry. It's horrible.

Rocknrolla21 · 25/01/2024 14:45

What wonderful timing for him to have a good day. Now you can let him go when he’s feeling peaceful and happy, instead of confused and in pain.

Shoutymomma · 25/01/2024 19:23

He has gone for the big sleep.
This morning we took him to the beach for a short walk, then bought him a McDonalds. He was eating pate when the vet arrived. After the first jab, he got in his bed and settled . We are broken, but I can think of worse ways to go.
Thank you for your support. Hold your loved ones extra tight tonight. Peace and love. 🕊️

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 25/01/2024 19:25

Aww bless, what a pain free, loved way to go.

notknowledgeable · 25/01/2024 19:27

I'm sorry for your loss, you have done exactly the right thing, and the most caring and loving thing. We have had to do the same, many animal lovers know exactly how you are feeling right now. Lots of love xx

Helplessandheartbroke · 25/01/2024 19:39

Sorry op. Just gone through this a few weeks ago. I know your pain. Sending hugs!

ZaraBlue · 25/01/2024 19:42

Tears 😭 the hardest thing. So so sorry. What a lucky, loved dog. ❤️

HoHoHoliday · 25/01/2024 19:42

❤️

Tulipvase · 25/01/2024 19:48

I love that your dog was treated with a McDonalds. Ours is a lab, so hard to tell what her actual favourite food is!

You have done entirely the right thing.

Windymcwindyson · 25/01/2024 19:54

So sorry op. I won't lie the guilt will hang over you for a good while. Ddog had a beach walk and fish and chips the day before she went.. On the day it was pancake day and she had 3. With Nutella. Nearly 4 years and I still doubt myself...
Run free pooches...

Justkeepingplatesspinning · 25/01/2024 20:19

That's lovely and heartbreaking in equal measure. What a super last day you gave your boy. Thinking of you and your family x

Floralnomad · 25/01/2024 20:55
