Jeez £400 a month!
I share your feelings.
We had a golden-sized dog who lived to 13 and a half with minimal health issues (basically nothing wrong with him at all apart from injuries until he was 11). His diet was almost entirely Skinner's Field and Trial.

I'm not having a go at anyone who spends more, but you can have a healthy dog without breaking the bank.

Yes, you can feed a dog far more cheaply than I do. It is 100% a choice. And it is all relative according to your budget as well.

But some dog food is better than others - and particular groups of dogs do need a better diet than others (even within a breed).

I have an 18 month old lab.

The kibble and Butternut box food I use together come in around £65 per month for food.

Apologies I've tried to upload a picture of the 'outdoor hot tap' set up for a couple of days but none of my pics would upload. Possibly because I was replying to your comment?!! I seem to have cracked it with a new reply. Here's my setup - cheap as chips for a handyman to make and the showerhead is a game changer!

Thanks, that'll be easy to set up

Make a trip to ikea to get the big golden dog toy! Mine had it since the day she came home and it's the only soft toy she doesn't destroy! It was bigger than her now she's bigger. Plays and sleeps with it every day! Enjoy and goodluck best dogs ever x

Wowee, that is a lot on food.
Mine's is £60 per month and that is a really high-quality, cold-pressed food made almost entirely of fish and no fillers. No mess, and loves it.
In total my dog costs me about £400 a month. My costs come in dog daycare/ holiday care/ insurance/ vet bills, but then I work FT, single, and have no family members to take care of my dog whilst I'm out.

If I didn't need dog daycare it'd be a lot more reasonable, under £200 a month.

I genuinely don't know anyone who spends as much as a PP on food. Even friends who feed the poshest raw stuff wouldn't go above about £90 or £100 per month.

I've come back here today to be disappointed, I wanted to see pics of GRs, all there is is an outside tap.

She looks beautiful!

ApolloandDaphne · 21/01/2024 18:42

I adore retrievers. We currently have an elderly lab. When shoe is no more i would love a retriever but i don't think i have the strength and stamina any more. Can't wait to see more pics.

Use champ dogs.
Be prepared for a challenge in puppyhood: we literally had a ball of energy who mouthed all the time and lunged at people. Our first GR although not our first dog, was a complete shock.
Sensitive stomach with regular bouts of diarrhoea (usually overnight). The owners of the other litter mates had the same experience. Ate everything in site. No chance of recall if he saw another dog or crisp packet or anything. The hair!!!! The mud!!!!
Now he's the most adorable young adult whose recall is much better but it's the love he gives us. He cuddles us like a human and has the most expressive face. He loves everyone and all other dogs.
He's worth it and we wouldn't swap him for the world but the first 15 months were tough.

BirthdayRainbow · 21/01/2024 19:03

Welcome Daisy.

Beautiful.

ApolloandDaphne · 21/01/2024 19:07

Daisy is such a cutie. Is she yours? If she is i would adore a thread detailing her journey (and yours!).

Tilllly · 21/01/2024 19:23
