Have 3 dogs. 2 over 5 and one puppy (9 months) who we did not intend to get but was more dumped on us at 10 weeks. But we love her.

We moved house 6 months ago, pup was still having accidents.

Dogs didn't want to poop outside as it was all flags.
So we took up 3mx3m of flags and put grass down.
They were much happier at going outside.

But every night I'm coming down to shit.

The older dogs are doing it and I'm pretty sure the puppy is EATING it.

As last night a chunk had been taken onto my fucking couch and her breath stunk of shit.

They get fed at 5pm. They go out for shits at night but they're still doing it inside.

My husband is on the verge of losing it.

Every morning the first thing we smell as we come downstairs is shit.

I'm sick to fucking death of it and I don't know what to do

Please help me :(

This is why dogs are fucking disgusting, and why people dislike them / don't want them in cafes etc. Take the anthropomorphism out of it and they're fucking repulsive animals.

This is in active before the fur baby crowd arrive.

That's helpful 🙄

I have admittedly gotten lazy with walks and routines lately

A total mystery as to why the dogs shit in the house. No wonder the OP is at her wits' end.

I've been seriously unwell and bereaved also.

Don't be so judgemental. I said lazy with the routines. Not that it hadn't been happening. It's just not been regimented.

Teentaxidriver · 22/12/2023 22:33

Ok so I have had a similar problem. Two dogs (9.5 years and 1.5 years). They have two meals a day. Big breakfast and then a smaller second meal at about 3pm. Never fed after 4pm. They eat a lot of rice to slow transit. They are in the kitchen overnight because it has a stone floor. When I was at the end of my tether, their second meal was at 1pm.

Thankyou for the advice.

I've taken this all in and am going to formulate a plan of attack.

I have admittedly gotten lazy with walks and routines lately

If you don't walk your dogs properly, they get anxious and will make a mess. Imagine not being allowed access to a bathroom when you needed to go - it's not just about pooing in the yard. Dogs needs to sniff and exercise for their mental wellbeing.

Teentaxidriver · 22/12/2023 22:34

Buy a snuggle safe from Amazon (doggie hot water bottle) to keep them warm plus blankets.

Oh go away and be a miserable sh*te elsewhere. Dogs are the purest form of love.

They get walked every single day.

I'm saying I've gotten lazy with the routine of the walks and the routine of meal times because my heads been all over the shop.

I also tried two walks a day but it is hard in the winter to do a late evening walk.

My thoughts exactly. Imagine living in a house like the OP's. It makes me feel sick just thinking about it

Teentaxidriver · 22/12/2023 22:36

I think the younger dog having accidents inside meant the older dog has become less reliable. Now if I come down to a poo, they are both in trouble. I put them outside and tell them what bad dogs they are, no treats and give them the cold shoulder😐

RandomMess · 22/12/2023 22:37

You have been seriously unwell, bereaved, routine out of sorts, added a 3rd dog and moved house.

This is likely all contributing to what is going on with their behaviour Flowers

It’s not difficult though is it? Two walks a day isn’t a lot to ask if you CHOOSE to own a dog. If you have a dog then you care for them. Yes it may be raining, snowing, blowing a gale etc but get your boots on and a coat on and off you go, that’s what you sign up for with dog ownership. You can even buy head torches if you need one. Why do people get dogs then whine about not being able to cater for their needs? If you can’t be arsed to walk a dog then don’t have one, our last walk is at 10pm.

Yes some dogs don’t want to go out in some weather but they get used to routine, you make it fun not a chore.

Teentaxidriver · 22/12/2023 22:39

Don’t give up. You’ll get them into a better routine. Watch what they eat as well. Our younger dog has a very sensitive tummy and anything new causes havoc with her digestion (hence rice).

I’m sorry but this is bollocks , if your dog , whatever the breed is properly housetrained then the only reason it will poo / wee indoors is if you fail to let them out or they have diarrhoea and cannot hold on . They do not poo indoors because they are wilful or because they are terriers and can’t be arsed .

Ah, go on with your bollocks! I've had and trained dogs all my life. Terriers are notorious for being bad about housetraining. And mine will poo and wee in the house at night only. She gets a lot of walking, runs five miles a day with me and gets a late walk at around midnight, during which she inevitably poos, doesn't stop her pooing on the bathmat overnight though. And vets say she's fine - even they concur that terriers can be 'difficult'.

Teentaxidriver · 22/12/2023 22:39

maybe try probiotics too.

Patterdales can be terribly strong willed and some are horrendous to train.

Then you are the issue so it needs sorting. No wonder the dogs don’t know when their toilet breaks are.

My husband is on the verge of losing it

I really hope he’s not shouting or ‘losing it’ at the dogs, this is NOT their fault. Why is he not taking the dogs out at night?

Floralnomad · 22/12/2023 22:51

I have a patterdale , he was very difficult to housetrain but once he was he wouldn’t dream of going indoors and he is a full on terrier . I think lots of people don’t have fully house trained dogs and just live with it , especially people with smaller dogs .

endoflevelbaddy · 22/12/2023 22:55

We've got a shih tzu mix too and she'll use a cat flap to let herself in and out if addressing the routine & evening walk doesn't help.
She's also a swine for shit eating even at 6, had to get rid of the kitten's litter tray pretty sharpish (hence the cat flap) 🤢

uclpp · 22/12/2023 22:55

I think that I would try to feed them as early as they can tolerate in the evening. See if they will shit in the garden shortly afterwards. If they won't, then I would walk them late at night. Walking can stimulate shitting anyway so even if they didn't go in the garden, it's worth a walk.

If you think the pup is eating turd, then can you crate the pup upstairs in your bedroom with you overnight? We have a little dog and crate him in our bedroom. He seems to love it.

He is taking them out! But they still shit inside.

And of course he doesn't shout at them, they're just little dogs. They're daft as brushes and don't have a thought behind their eyes. They're so dopey! He could never be angry at them personally but anyone would be sick of dealing with poop at 7am most mornings.

It's a figure of speech. Not every sentence is literal.

Mine don’t poo in the house but I’ve been through phases where one will want to go out during the night - sometimes several times. This was helped by feeding later so the food didn’t have time to go through his system. It sounds as if you already feed later though.

I’ve recently started feeding both dogs Turkey/sardines and brown rice (because one dog has allergies) and they’re doing fewer poos…they were often doing three a day but now it’s usually one, sometimes two. It’s made life a bit easier.

I would crate them though in separate crates….if they’re downstairs anyway where’s the harm?
