Thin skinned lurcher lost a bit of weight

She’s seen the vet, who is happy with her - she’s eating fine, and behaving normally, nothing concerning.

I suspect she’s a bit cold, but would this cause her to lose weight?

She hasn’t lost much, but as she’s greyhound shaped even a little bit is noticeable.

The heating is on in the house but it’s still on the chilly side (I’m comfortable with a fleecy jumper on).

I’m upping her food a bit, but I think she needs a jumper, but ds says I’m being ridiculous as she’s a dog. Might it help her? My instinct is that if I need a jumper to be comfortable, she might too.

Mine wear jumpers at night (heating is off then) or if I'm cold! I tend to feel their ears. It's not ridiculous for thin coated dogs to need jumpers - mine always wear them on walks as they live in a centrally heated house so don't grow a thicker coat to compensate for colder weather. Ignore the husband and get the poor dog a jumper

SoddingWeddings · 03/12/2023 10:12

Put a jumper or coat on the bloody dog. Greyhounds definitely feel the cold when they aren't sprinting. That's why there's a market for them - not the tat that's "oh so cute" but actual greyhound shaped clothing.

My "husky" is crossed with a greyhound and other breeds - even she gets a coat at times because she has a mixed bag of fur - thick thick scarf and knickerbockers like a husky, but thin fur on her belly and lower legs with visible skin

SethSaysNowt · 03/12/2023 10:15

I’m going to see if I can adapt a jumper of mine.
Thanks for this.

You absolutely 100% should treat a Greyhound/Greyhound type Lurcher as if they are the same as you temperature wise.
If you need a fleece on, they need a fleece on. If you need a heavier coat outside, they need a heavier coat outside. If you need pyjamas they need pyjamas. Rule of thumb for the pointy nosed ones.
Besides, one of the great joys of owning a death screamer is the clothes shopping opportunities they bring with them.

Death screamer 😂

How gorgeous!

I’ve just tried to put a fleece of mine on her - she was not impressed!
She’s currently under a blanket.

There are fleece greyhound jumpers on etsy for about £15. You’ll find she’s happier in that than one of yours.

SethSaysNowt · 03/12/2023 10:33

I’ve seen several styles. I’m not sure she’d tolerate me putting her legs through holes, but will the horse blanket styles be warm enough so you think?

How old is she? Some breeds have a late growth spurt at around two years and are very slim, before filling out. Her bed looks great. Is it somewhere warm? Can she eat a bit more/supplement with some fish oil or fresh meat?

SethSaysNowt · 03/12/2023 10:42

She’s 4.
Her bed is the sofa 😂
I’m adding sardines, eggs, and/or fresh meat, so hopefully will see a difference soon.
The whole house is chilly, even with the heating on, so there are lots of blankets around.
When I’m at work though she can’t put a blanket on by herself.

Yes a blanket style coat will help if you don’t think she will tolerate putting her tippy toes in a fleece. Anything that traps a layer of warm air in. You might find she doesn’t mind a purpose made fleece though as it will be tighter fitting rather than baggy and flapping around as an adapted human one might be.

ImNunTheWiser · 03/12/2023 11:01

Love her pointy nose and that she can put her own blanket on 🥰

SethSaysNowt · 03/12/2023 11:02

I’ll start with an over the head blanket style one I think.

Other lurcher has taken over the sofa. Skinny lurcher is seething in the background!

She can’t do the blanket herself, she has a servant (me) who does it all for her!

You might be surprised what they tolerate when they realise the benefits 😂😂

Warm not hot goats milk is nourishing if you want to help put on or maintain weight.

One of mine, wrapped up and eager to chase squirrels! The bear bell warns the squirrels of him approaching at a speed of 90mph so they are able to escape his jaws of doom.

He’s beautiful!
Think mine needs a bell! Squirrels are her nemesis!

Our family have whippets and they wear jumpers and coats a lot in winter. They tolerate it for the warmth.

CMOTDibbler · 03/12/2023 11:29

My salukish lurcher absolutely needs fleece pyjamas in the house at this time of year. He loves them and runs over to get them on and cooperates with the legs. Today to go out, he wore HoundTees long johns and a Hurtta extreme parka over the top

Evilcold · 03/12/2023 11:29

They are gorgeous. Is there a large enough cave bed available? Work well for cold terriers.

mine have also taken over the sofa.

Pedestriancrossing · 03/12/2023 11:37

My greyhound has fleece pyjamas for nighttime and anorak-like hound coats for walks. We found he sleeps much better in pyjamas plus looks adorable obviously!
