How long for frontline plus to kill fleas??

AreYouLeadyForThis · 18/11/2023 10:52

I've not seen any fleas but 3 dogs going mad scratching.

I have seen some flea dirt in their fur.

Used frontline plus Thursday night. Washed all bedding on hot wash etc.

They're still trying to scratch their backsides and bite themselves :(

Frontline is often ineffective nowadays as many fleas have become resistant. You're best off speaking to your vet and getting flea treatment on prescription as some of them work completely differently and thus, are significantly more effective.

qwerty222 · 18/11/2023 11:12

Agree with @Ankerdam. We had no luck with frontline but the vet prescribed stuff was brilliant. No fleas in about a year now.

AreYouLeadyForThis · 18/11/2023 11:15

For fucks sake. Why do they still sell it then?

You need vet prescribed stuff for the dogs ( nexguard / bravecto etc) and get some indorex to spray the house or they will keep getting reinfected . A seresto collar might be an option moving forward .

margotrose · 18/11/2023 11:19

Frontline hasn't worked for years now. Bravecto, Advantage and Nexguard are all good options. You can get Advantage OTC without a prescription.

Remember, you'll need to take your dog to the vets for any prescription flea or worm. treatment as they need to check them/weigh them before they can prescribe now. The law changed a few months ago.

Sgtmajormummy · 18/11/2023 11:30

General wisdom says Frontline clears the dog of fleas in 48 hours. You also need to disinfect bedding, wash floors, Hoover carpets and sofas intensively, wash your dogs with anti-itching shampoo… It’s a huge pain and the risk of needing to do it all again if you haven’t eliminated the eggs is high.
To avoid all that work you could ask your vet about anti parasite chews. They effectively poison your dogs’ blood so any fleas or ticks bite once and die. Expensive for three dogs, though.

MarmiteChocolate · 18/11/2023 11:40

Front line is useless, you need the "hardcore" stuff from the vet on prescription. Pricey, yes, but it does get rid of the buggers.

WetBandits · 18/11/2023 11:42

Capstar works wonders on fleas! We were left a gift of fleas by the previous owners of our house and our poor cats and dog were riddled with them, we got Capstar tablets for all of them and the fleas literally fall off them, dead. We had to get pest control out to treat the house, it was that bad. But definitely Capstar!

2jacqi · 18/11/2023 11:49

@AreYouLeadyForThis go to the vets and they will give you ( I think it is tablets i got for mine) it kills the fleas whenever they bite the animal. it definitely works. I would have bathed the pups first before putting on frontline and i would have actually thrown out the dog bedding and replaced it with new. remember if you have carpets in your home then they must also be treated

Hey OP

We have just got rid of fleas on our dog and cat. It took 3 weeks in total. Which is great timing as we move in 2 weeks! We did the following:

-daily comb of both pets
-isolating any clothes that had been on the floor into bin bags and wash bag by bag on high heat and tumble dry (which killed me as I try not to use the tumbler)
-washing and drying clothes more regularly on highest heat they could tolerate
-washing and drying all bedding
-spot ons for both pets
-flea spraying the house and pet bedding

-daily hoovering of all floors and skirting boards, soft furnishings, mattresses, dining chairs, pet bedding and cat tree etc. Make sure you empty the hoover into the outside bin.

We tried this for 2 weeks and then I found a flea in my baby's cot and lost my shit. We got the vet to provide stronger spot ons for the cat and tablets for the dog. I shipped my husband and baby out for the day and hoovered, steamed and Indorex sprayed the shit out of the house and re washed everything.

It's only the last 5ish days we haven't seen anything or found anything on the pets (dirt or actual fleas).

It was intense and tiring and upsetting but we got there! You do have to be consistent though. Apparently they're quite bad this year.

AreYouLeadyForThis · 18/11/2023 14:42

The vets just said they can't Have anything for 4 WEEKS now.

So what am I supposed to do. Just let the little shits breed into a frenzy for a month?! 😭

OP posts:
margotrose · 18/11/2023 14:44

The vet is right in that giving them another dose now could cause problems.

AreYouLeadyForThis · 18/11/2023 14:45

But how do I stop the infestation if I've treated them with something absolutely useless and can't give them anything else for a month?

OP posts:
margotrose · 18/11/2023 14:46

I'm afraid I haven't got a clue - maybe flea combs, natural remedies and lots of Indorex? I don't know if the collars can be used alongside the treatment, I imagine so?

Floralnomad · 18/11/2023 14:47

All you can do is spray the house , hoover daily and flea comb the dogs daily .

Bringonthesunforthewashing · 18/11/2023 14:53

@AreYouLeadyForThis
we had this problem in august. Treated with Frontline and got some spray (can’t remember what it was called, but the more expensive one as that had most effective treatment in it).

Everything boil washed etc. nothing worked and I was freaking out!!

Rang vet, was told Frontline complete waste of money these days. I went down and got tablet from vets. Fleas dead in less than 24 hours 😁

Superbroom · 18/11/2023 15:02

You can use the capstar tablets with frontline.
Do the capstar, treat the environment - indorex, hoovering, washing fabrics and daily combing with flea comb.

Nooneelsewilldoit · 18/11/2023 15:06

Frontline (fipronil) is so old now that most fleas are resistant to it. You’re probably better to get a newer style treatment from your vet. If it’s a heavy infestation you’ll need to treat your house with something like Indorex.

I don't think it is. I've not seen a single flea. But I can see flea dirt and they're itching like mad.

It's been a really bad year for them.

You can buy effective flea treatment tablets over the counter. Anything containing Nitenpyram as the active ingredient will kill live fleas within a few hours. You should be able to get it from most pet shops and places like The Range. Brands such as Capstar, Johnson's 4Fleas or Bob Martin Clear. Should cost in the region of £5-12.

A full bath should also help shift them.

Try using Advantage as your next spot on, as it's a different drug to Frontline which is becoming less effective. Vet UK had an offer on for it recently. Full price from them it's around £12 for 4 pipettes.

You can spray your home with an insecticide, but the best thing you can do is keep hoovering twice a day for a month. Also clean all bedding on a hot wash.

Annoyingly it is a 4 week wait after applying Fipronil.

I did the above and it shifted them with no further sign.

KissyMissy · 18/11/2023 16:09

I used frontline plus on my two dogs and worked within a couple of days

It's very area dependent, tbh.

Swaffield · 18/11/2023 17:00

Found out the hard way that Frontline was ineffective on a cat. Used Advantage (did cheat a little in the wait between one and the other because it was so awful for him and us). Literally within an hour the surface the cat was on was littered with bodies and you could see others spinning around and falling off. All gone. It is the most effective cure I have seen for anything.

AreYouLeadyForThis · 18/11/2023 17:02

I usually get advantage but was persuaded by PAH to use frontline 😭

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 18/11/2023 17:56

I’d buy some Johnson 4fleas tablets for the dogs and some indorex for the house and completely nuke the house
