Anyone in Aberystwyth area?

Hi

We have seen a puppy we are interested in and are trying to work out if it is a puppy farm. Could anyone in the Aberystwyth area with knowledge of local breeders help me out please? We are two hours away and don’t want to do the journey if it is a puppy farm!

Thanks

I'm not in the area, but afaik people are much more likely to know about breeders according to the breed rather than the geographical location so it'd probably help if you say which breed it is.

mnahmnah · 06/11/2023 19:52

It’s a cavapoochon. They also breed cockers. They are licensed breeders.

I don’t want to put anything identifying on here, but if I can PM someone the details who may know, that would be very much appreciated

Is it on pets4homes? The ‘pet courier can be arranged if travel is a problem’ bit rings alarm bells for me. I would expect a breeder to want to meet whomever their puppy is going to

redboxer321 · 06/11/2023 20:03

An argument can be made for breeding pedigree dogs from good lines, eg labs who have excellent hip scores but no argument can be made for breeding mutts. Other than the breeder wants to make money by exploiting animals.
West Wales is well known to be a puppy farm hotspot too. HTH

Hint: Adopt don't shop.

LightDrizzle · 06/11/2023 20:20

The cavapoochon is a red flag, almost particularly with being a licensed breeder. It’s not good people deciding to breed their own pets because they think it’s nice to “let her have a litter” or because Bella is sooo lovely it would be a shame not to. These kind of breeders are unlikely to research bloodlines or do the appropriate health checks, but at least the nicest ones, though clueless, probably socialise the puppies well and care for them and the dam. I still think it’s wrong.

However a licensed breeder breeding cavapoochons is a commercial breeder that is not working towards improving a breed, cavapoochon is not a breed and the outcomes of matings will be very unpredictable, so I think it is highly likely this is a puppy farm. Cavapoochons and their like have been very popular for a few years now and cockers are an incredibly cute but high needs breed. If you want a cocker, I’d start with the local or national society and do your research there on breeders: what health checks they do, how many dogs they have and how often they breed from each dam etc. A good breeder will welcome your questions and ask you a lot in return.

Wolfiefan · 06/11/2023 20:23

Cavapoochon will be a puppy breeder. Licensed means nothing.

mnahmnah · 06/11/2023 20:24

@PaddingtonsHat

Yes it is. Rang alarm bells no or me and that why I wanted to ask on here. Thanks

@redboxer321

We have every intention of adopting. This one is 5 months and classed as an adoption as it is from their family pet supposedly.

Ibravedaflood · 06/11/2023 20:26

Plenty of mongrels in rescues. Why pay top dollar for 1?

mnahmnah · 06/11/2023 20:26

@LightDrizzle

We lost our 15 year old cocker earlier this year. She was adopted by us at 9 months. She was gorgeous, but yes, high energy! We want a calmer breed or mix this time

mnahmnah · 06/11/2023 20:28

@Ibravedaflood

We don’t want to. We want to adopt. This one is supposedly an adoption from their family pet’s litter, the father is a health tested poodle that belongs to a friend. But they are also a licensed breeder.

mnahmnah · 06/11/2023 20:29

@Wolfiefan

Thanks. Looks like my suspicions will be correct. We have a video of him and he looks super happy and healthy, but we don’t know that for sure do we?

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 06/11/2023 20:34

People who have a family pet either get it spayed or keep it away from entire males. Unless they want to breed to make money.
It isn’t just about a healthy pup. It’s a welfare issue. A mother dog churning out litter after litter and no health testing done or care about choice of stud dog.

Floralnomad · 06/11/2023 20:34

If it’s coming from a breeder or family home then that is shopping not adopting . Have you looked at Many Tears rescue as they usually have lots of poo type crossbreeds from puppy farms that need adopting .

LightDrizzle · 06/11/2023 20:34

To give an indication of how low the bar is for licensed breeders, to meet the minimum standards, each member of staff must be responsible for 20 dogs or less! That’s right, you could have two people responsible for 40 dogs and still meet minimum requirements. How much enrichment and socialisation do you think they’d get in that scenario?

The family pet thing is clearly bollocks as why didn’t they part with this puppy at the usual 8 or 9 weeks? Given they didn’t why aren’t they now so attached to it, as experienced dog people, that they keep it? They are dog breeders! What’s stopping them? You don’t go through the ball-ache of record keeping etc and getting vet inspections that comes with being a registered breeder if you and just having a litter from the family dog.

I hope you find a lovely dog or puppy soon.

LightDrizzle · 06/11/2023 20:37

Ah! Sorry to hear you lost your lovely girl. It’s always too soon but it sounds like she had a long and happy life with you.

LightDrizzle · 06/11/2023 20:40

Are they giving the puppy away gratis as it is an adoption rather than a sale?

mnahmnah · 06/11/2023 20:55

@LightDrizzle They are asking £450. Most adoptions ask around this from what I can see. Thanks for all your points though. Confirms my suspicions! Glad I asked on here.

@Floralnomad super helpful thanks! I will take a look. We were wanting a poodle mix or poodle for the hypoallergenic factor.

Thanks everyone - just to confirm that we plan to adopt. We have two children which means a lot of rescues won’t consider us. We want something smaller and hypoallergenic. The perfect pooch will turn up!

OP posts:
PaddingtonsHat · 06/11/2023 20:57

A poodle cross isn’t guaranteed to be hypoallergenic- sounds like you need a pedigree poodle

mnahmnah · 06/11/2023 20:58

@PaddingtonsHat

Yes, I understand that. It’s not vital. But more hypoallergenic than not would be best. Thanks.

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 06/11/2023 21:24

@mnahmnah no dog is hypoallergenic.

Ibravedaflood · 06/11/2023 21:26

A 5 month old deliberately bred puppy they couldn't sell 3 months ago for half whack then?

mnahmnah · 06/11/2023 21:41

@Ibravedaflood

It seems that way. Sad. He looks gorgeous too.

OP posts:
Toddlerteaplease · 06/11/2023 21:53

What the hell is a cabapoochon? It's a mongrel.
