Warm & waterproof dog walking coat

I’m on the hunt for a super warm and waterproof coat. Probably long puffer style. I have one by joules but it’s water resistant and not waterproof so I got soaked last year when out with my DS! We’ve now got a dog so more reason to be dry this winter.

Struggling to find something that isn’t £££

The North Face arctic parka is expensive but they last years so worth the investment. Completely waterproof and warm. I love mine, I’ve just replaced a 7 year old one with a new one

Lands End Squall. Various lengths available. During an appallingly wet winter I was the only person on our shoot to stay dry during a day beating.

@BHRK yes love the north face ones but oh so ££

Can someone who has this coat advise on sizing please? What would a UK 12-14 be?

SummerSazz · 31/10/2023 08:27

@fatsatsuma I'm a 12 and have a 40. It's so warm that you don't need much on underneath so that's not baggy. I'd probably go 42 for a 12-14

North face Suzanne triclimate. Works for spring, summer and winter. So warm with the quilted liner. It’s shaped so looks ok. And waterproof.

BeansOnToast32 · 31/10/2023 08:37

I've got a Didrikson Leya Long it's £££ but it's the warmest/longest coat I've had and totally waterproof. I'm 5ft 5 so it comes just over halfway down my calves, when I wear my short boots no part of my leg is exposed to the cold/rain.

Also has massive pockets which is another plus, the hood is also really big but adjustable so you don't get rain in your face.

The paradox with a dog walking coat is that except for the very coldest days in winter you warm up as you walk. So a properly warm coat when you leave the house becomes too warm within 10-15 mins. If i wear layers then I end up carrying a layer or tying it round my waist. I now just accept I'm going to be a bit too cold at the start of the walk but walk briskly enough to warm up as fast as I can. (I suppose it's also dependent on how fast your dog walks, by the end with our old girl I wasn't doing much walking at all, more a gentle stroll so I never warmed up).

Waterproof to me is more important so I have a Barbour raincoat with a great hood with an elastic cinch so it doesn't blow off and huge pockets for treats. And for the really cold winter days I have the Seasalt Janelle which won't win any style points but does the job - DH calls it my football manager coat!

I have thick and thinner Barbours and a Musto, after a 40 minute walk they’re wetter inside than outside. One Barbour is waxed and over the years it’s had Nikwax spray-on waterproofer, the others get washed with Tech Wash and proofed with a wash in TX Direct. I’d love to know which waterproof hooded coats are effectively breathable as whichever coat I’m wearing for the morning walk is still damp inside at 4pm (as are my neoprene lined wellies).

Another vote for Didrikson. I have summer and winter versions. Had them so long I can't remember what the style names were but I can recommend them for warmth and waterproofing!

Lorelaigilless · 31/10/2023 09:05

Agree with PP that you swiftly become overheated so don’t go too warm!

I've had mine for 10 years - considering replacing only because I don't like the colour it but it is fabulous. I hate wet, cold days and this coat is the only thing that convinces me to walk out the front door, I rarely feel overheated in it - and no worries about it getting muddy - just chuck it in the wash and my dog loves to lie on it in the pub - because no way will he lie on the floor.

I can recommend the Barbour Beaumont which is the best 100% waterproof raincoat I've ever had - slightly longer length so it fully covers my bum, massive hood with an elastic pull to keep it on your head while walking in the wind or cycling, roomy enough to have a gilet or chunky jumper under if needed or just a t-shirt in summer. The best part is the cape bit at the back with mesh underneath, so it's completely ventilated.

Outer face: 100% Polyester  Outer membrane: 100% Polyurethane  Inner: 100% Polyester Yoke Lining/Sleeve Lining/Dripstrip: 100% Polyester Branding at the back and pocket Machine wash at 30°C

PS it is not at all a warm coat though! It's just a breathable waterproof shell, but that means you can have whatever you want underneath depending on the weather.
