Would your dog defend you on a walk? If so what breed is it?

I love my Springer to bits but if I was attacked while walking she’d either wet herself or throw herself at them for a fuss. I work and walk in remote locations and could do with a dog that would stand up for me. We have 5 year old DS and 19 month DD so the breed needs to be family friendly.

Boxer -would stand between you and the threat, whilst nudging you backwards.

EggTheParrot · 13/09/2023 23:44

She would and has done it, she bit the guy who was trying to rape me. Actually it was her bite that convicted him because he came to the same hospital I was in and the police noted it.

Border terrier

fabmaccawhackythumbsaloft · 13/09/2023 23:49

As well as my GSD I have a terrier who thinks he's 10 men so I think he would too

I downloaded the latest Jurassic Park movie , and for all he's small in stature when the T rex made its appearance he ran up to the tv and tried to fight it 😂😂😂

I thought 10/10 for effort pint size 😂

Hedgesgalore · 13/09/2023 23:50

I don't think he would, never been tested.
Small terrier breed.

I am training him to look to me to make decisions and to protect him. Easier said than done with independent thinkers like terriers, plus mine is one who is on constant high alert out of the house.

We walk in quiet, remote areas. I wear big walking boots and carry a bigger flexi lead than I really need.

Underminer · 14/09/2023 00:18

Elderly Pekingese with no teeth left, however she farts when she is nervous and that fart stench would act like a secret biological weapon as she can produce a hellish stink 😷

Giggorata · 14/09/2023 00:23

My Beauceron (large European Shepherd/guardian) certainly would. She is extremely wary and watchful at the best of times and quite unfriendly to strangers, though not aggressive. Unless they come near the van or the house.
The two labs would get very upset but they are gentle girls and not equipped for defence, really.

Blanketpolicy · 14/09/2023 00:30

He had a labrador and he was so soft be would probably run away or just sniff around.

My niece has two screwed up rescue collies that are very vocal. She mostly walks them separately and they have both individually warded off men who have approached her acting a bit strange.

foxlover47 · 14/09/2023 00:35

2 patterdale x jack Russell x chi terriers brothers , they absolutely would defend me or if my daughter was walking them, they have always been really protective.
Only thing is being small I'm not sure they would do a lot of damage but they would give it a good go

Flipflopflopflip · 14/09/2023 00:44

I have a cavalier king Charles spaniel, don't think there's a hope in hell he would defend me if attacked. But he does get between my young daughter and dogs that bound up to her.

I have a young Weimaraner and (having had the breed years ago) I’m pretty certain that as an adult, she would defend me. I also have two toy poodles who would hide behind me.

Ditto with the Weimaraner. She is very defensive of us as a family unit and our last Weim was the same.

Years ago the German police did an experiment with Boxers, GSD and Doberman dogs. They staged a break in. The GSD barked and ran off after the man down the road, the Doberman growled first then took chase. The boxer let the burglar in, got between the burglar and the door and snarled keeping the burglar contained. Boxers were shown to have more adaptive intelligence.

Had two Boxers, mad as a box of frogs, quite hard work to train, loved people but yes both would absolutely protect me.

FrigginFrig · 14/09/2023 00:53

Yes without a doubt and has proven himself on a few occasions, he's a Dobermann.

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 14/09/2023 01:00

Currently without a dog, but going on previous dogs -

Black lab would have headbutted to try and make friends.
Gsd would have made himself look threatening so nobody got close.
Weimaraner happily let a stranger in the house, then pinned them in the corner and wouldn't let them move until I said so. It was a workman who she didn't see me let in.

Absolutely.

Totally aware and guided by our reactions.
Despite her friendly nature I have absolutely no doubt that she would protect me.

Maraudingmarauders · 14/09/2023 01:05

I have a large saluki cross lurcher- she stands just short of waist height and weighs 30kg.
She would be gone across the hills before I could say her name 🤣 when we have strangers or workmen in the house she stands at the bedroom door and eyes them down the stairs, if she bothers to leave the bed at all to check.
I once slipped on an icy puddle and she fled in surprise.

I walk her in all kinds of places though - remote, woodland, parks etc. Never once have I wished for her to stand up for me or protect me??

TedMullins · 14/09/2023 04:23

Mine has barked at creepy men before (but also at non-creepy people minding their own business). Trouble is he’s a pug with most of his teeth missing and about as menacing as a sock

Pebblesflintstoneandbambamrubble · 14/09/2023 07:57

I don't own a dog but my adult ds does

Staffie-bark like you wouldn't believe, but the biggest softie ever

Proved one night when ds,girlfriend and the dog where all in bed (they live in a ground floor flat)

Someone tried to break in and the dog went insane

But at the same time-he was stood behind ds as though he thought ds would protect him but it was OK as ddog would provide the noise!

We joke they are the perfect partnership-ds at 6' and a big build and the dog who makes the racket

(Turned out to be a pissed up dickhead who had the wrong flat)

He's very good at the noise but useless at being a guard dog!

(But we luffs him anyway)

RonniePickering · 14/09/2023 07:58

Ugh I know mine would be killed trying, he’s a Shih Tzu who is way braver than his size.

CissOff · 14/09/2023 07:59

Two cockerpoos here - one would definitely go to bat for me. The other would have a go but would be more likely to run off 😂

Setyoufree · 14/09/2023 08:01

Theoretically my Ridgeback would get between me and a threat. Luckily I've never had to experience it yet. Beautiful family dog, I don't understand why more people don't have them

PimpMyFridge · 14/09/2023 08:03

My abandoned in-a-box-with-her-litter-mates random mongrel (lab sized) had cause to defend me 3 times and did.

Wanttobeok · 14/09/2023 08:11

I think appearance would do a lot to make would be attackers think twice!

Why not go for something huge that no one in their right mind would mess with but in reality is a gentle giant? Newfoundland maybe

I have a male Golden Retriever who weighs 40k. He is very attached to me so I like to think he would kick up a fuss if anyone attacked me. Previous golden however would have run a mile!

However my boy is big enough that I think it would give someone pause, even if he didn't follow through

GoodOldEmmaNess · 14/09/2023 08:14

Pretty sure that my PRT would run away if the going got tough (ie if barking whilst wagging your tail inexplicably failed to deter the attacker).

His predecessor of the same breed (who was in fact prone to reactive aggression) did indeed run away when I was attacked by a cowAngry.

He made it all the way home, having crossed a main road. Caring neighbours lifted him over our gate to safety - while I was still a mile away fending for myself with a broken fingerAngry.

They are beautiful, I agree. A friend had one when I was young and she was a bouncy delight. If I meet one these days they are always impeccably well behaved. I think maybe their reputation as a protection dog might have kept them on the rare side as a family pet, but that's no bad thing as it means they haven't been overbred to demand like a lot of other breeds.

GoodOldEmmaNess · 14/09/2023 08:21

There is a Ridgeback walked locally. He is soooo beautiful and a total softie. But even though I know his gorgeous nature I would certainly think twice about attacking his owner!! (The owner is a great big muscle man so I probably wouldn't attack him even if he was walking his guinea pig, but still.)
