We have lovely Golden Retriever and she sheds like crazy. Do you have any clever ways of keeping on top of the hair at home?
anyone have one of those robot vacuum cleaners? I don’t think it would cope with the hair, but my friend swears by it.
Lead me to think- does anyone have other awesome hacks on keeping the hair to a minimum?
ta!

I have a cavalier and they shed but I keep on top of it by very very regularly grooming

Random789 · 10/09/2023 09:02

Lol at the typo. I thought the thread was about some sort of self-slicing loaf.

I have a shedding breed! A wire-haired terrier.
I try to brush daily with one of those rubber Zoom brushes. They are brilliant at getting the coat clean, take out an amount of hair and are lovely and gentle. (You have towash them after each use or they stay slightly greasy and lose their effective friction)

Weekly, I use a Furminator, which is good at getting out the undercoat. And every couple of weeks I use a stripping stone to get out a load of the longer hair.

The job I do is nothing like as thorough and neat as a professional would achieve. But it keeps on top of the shedding and (I think) aids the health of the coat.

Thanks, yeah we brush her daily with a ‘furminator’ brush thing, but the hallway still has clumps of hair that look like tumble weed just rolling around 😂 every day…

We have a Shiba Inu, we dealt with it by giving up, in the summer it was taking a good 1.5 hours everyday to keep on top of it, sod that.

Thanks for all that.
oh- should I not use the furminator daily! 😳 do you think that would damage her coat? I’d be mortified if I did!

I can't see there would be any harm in using the furminator daily! I should probs use it more often. I like the gentleness of the Zoom just becaue it helps me to feel confident that the dog is going to enjoy the massage aspect of grooming. I'm a bit oversensitive about that because my previous terrier had a weirdly intense body-sensitivity and could barely tolerate brushing.

Nice! I’ll check out the Zoom too. She seems to enjoy, rolls down and her tail goes. She just loves ANY attention!

Also have a dog that sheds loads - golden retriever/ lab cross. Doggy daycare say they have never known a dog like her for shedding. Hoovering at least once a day and grooming her outside keeps things kind of acceptable. The hair on clothes gets me down but I put work clothes on immediately before I leave the house and change as soon as I am home. The kids drive me mad as they drop their clothes on the floor and they get covered in hair even though the dog doesn't really spend any time in their rooms. I think you mainly have to learn to live with it.

FiveShelties · 10/09/2023 09:36

I have a Shetland Sheepdog (Sheltie) who sheds. I comb her every other day which seems to keep on top of it.

My major tip is - don't wear black trousers😂

Edited for typo.

Goldiedude · 10/09/2023 09:48

@FiveShelties yup! any black clothes…!!!

@ilovesushi I can relate to all of that. And when the kids have their uniform on, all de haired, and I catch them saying a ‘good bye’ to our girl before they go to school which obviously involves lots of strokes and rubs!!! 😳😂

Furminators actually contain a blade which cuts the hair, over use can be damaging. I have German shepherds and daily brushing helps, the main thing is acceptance, a heavy shedder is going to be a hairy life I'm afraid!

ilovesushi · 10/09/2023 10:09

@Goldiedude yes! And when in full clean uniform they thrown themselves down on the dog's blanket on the sofa for a full body hug. 😭

TheFirstStraw · 10/09/2023 10:14

We have two GRs. Get a Robot vacuum. Our Eufy G30 sets off every morning and deals with the hair and the dirt and the random bits of stick that they chew up inside. You will only wish you'd bought one years ago.

princesspeppax · 10/09/2023 10:29

Following with interest. We have a fluffy lab x who I brush 2/3 times a week, he gets regular grooming and de shed and I hoover the full house twice a day but we still have fur everywhere constantly. Although he is very cute so worth it all Grin

Whatnowfgs · 10/09/2023 10:30

Our Golden retriever sheds a huge amount too. He is restricted to the kitchen family room only. I hoover it once sometimes twice a day with a shark anti hair wrap.
Interesting that the Eufy can cope with the hair.

BigBundleOfFluff · 10/09/2023 11:23

I have a goldie and have just accepted the golden tumbleweed. I do brush her everyday. In 2 minds on the furminator so don't really use that anymore. I've also used a mars brush - it took out a Tescos poly bag of undercoat during her last major moult but I'm only using that during a peak moulting times.
I have a cheap robot cleaner - it copes ok. But I love my Miele cat and dog. Even if the house looks clean it's shocking what it pulls up.

Silverdogblue · 10/09/2023 11:29

I’m pretty sure all breed shed. It’s just some (like my Weimaraners) only have short hair, none of that fluffy undercoat which sticks to everything. I’m still finding it from the visit of a German shepherd at Christmas!!

Groom and vacuum. I think they are the only two coping mechanisms. I still have to vacuum every day and always fill the Dyson thingy. It’s a wonder they’re not both bald.

Isheabastard · 10/09/2023 11:37

I had a prolific shedder.

Anytime I was wearing my marigold for house work or gardening I would briskly stroke my dog. The hair would fly off. Better to do it in the garden, free fluff for the birds when nest building.

Rubber gloves are good for picking up hair off carpets and couches.

I think the best tip is to always have a brush or comb to hand and any time you are sitting with your dog just start combing them. That way they are getting numerous mini brushes a day.

Leonberger · 10/09/2023 12:20

Mine shed horrendously all year round. The German shepherd is something else!

The best thing I’ve found that helps is a blaster dryer. I couldn’t live without mine, I use it to try them after walks, blast mud/sticks off and also to remove undercoat and loose hair. I also brush mine occasionally but there’s not much to brush out if they have been blasted recently.

To deal with it I would suggest no carpet and a rubber broom.

Goldiedude · 10/09/2023 15:27

Great, thanks everyone! Loving the shared experiences too- always good to know you’re not the only ones!
on my shopping list:
more brushes, blaster dryer, Eufy G30 vacuum and I’ll look into the Miele cat and dog…

@Isheabastard great tips. I’ve watched the birds fly off with my Golden’s fur in their beaks - Good to know the chicks will have a cosy, warm nest!!

Be careful your remote vacs don’t suck in your dogs tail. It may have auto shut off- just be careful.

I have a lab. I have given up and embraced the hair.

bingohandjob · 10/09/2023 17:12

Black lab owner here. In terms of keeping the house (relatively) clean - we've got a Sebo Felix upright that does a good job with our rugs, landing and stair carpets (that are a kind of oatmeal colour) and it has good long hose and nozzles. A rubber sweeping brush is a game changer - so much so, have given two away to friends who can't believe how much more effective they are then a normal broom. We've got cotton throws over the sofas that go into a horse blanket bag on a 60° wash every week and I also put an old bath sheet under the throw on "his" side of the sofas. Pup is fascinated by the vacuum cleaner and will let me gently put the nozzle on him when it's in its lowest setting. I aim to vacuum every other day to keep on top of it and do a deep RIGHT, THAT'S IT! THESE BLOODY HAIRS ARE EVERYWHERE move everything, deep clean once a fortnight. Having tiles in kitchen and laminate in downstairs area helps a lot.

Pup regularly has a swim on his walks, we Mud Daddy hose him down and my other half gives him a bloody good going over with a rubber brush before a finer comb - honestly, what comes off him looks like Terry Wogan's wig. The shedding is not too bad once his winter and summer coats have blown out.

I've also developed a Zen like acceptance of finding glossy black hairs e.g. once I take my bra off at night and when I slip on a "clean" white t shirt.

averylongtimeago · 10/09/2023 17:26

We've had Goldens for over 40 years. They moult. All the time. A spayed bitch will grow a thick curly coat which constantly sheds. Unspayed girls tend to blow their whole coat several times a year.
We currently have one of each. The unspayed one is nearly bald, but still shedding.

Tips: tiles or laminate or wood floors are easier to clean.
Don't try to wear black.
Train them not to go on the furniture.
