Pup has just eaten the fat I'd just take off a pork joint.
Now panicking.
He's almost eight moths and has stolen all sorts so we know he has a strong stomach but how worried should we be?

Very.. dogs can't eat pork of any kind.. gives them pancreanitis.
Take to vets ASAP.

JSmithIloveyou · 09/09/2023 16:12

Pork fat is hard for dogs to digest and can cause digestive issues, especially when consumed in large amounts. Pork fat, especially in excessive amounts, could also cause inflammation in dogs and irritation in the pancreas.

drivinmecrazy · 09/09/2023 16:16

Thank you. Seems I may have over reacted. He had taken the fat but hasn't eaten it, just chomped it a bit.
I'm waiting for a call from pet insurance as we have free remote access.
Managed to book a call with a vet for half past four so pretty impressed.
Obviously not with the dog!!!!

They can eat pork - plenty of dog treats contain pork - pigs ears, pig snouts and pork rolls are just a few examples that come to mind. Obviously not in huge quantities, but pork itself isn't inherently dangerous.

OP, I really wouldn't worry if he's just chewed it. I'm sure he'll be absolutely fine.

What? Of course dogs can eat pork. They just shouldn't eat it all the time

Redlarge · 09/09/2023 18:43

I wouldnt have worried in the slightest. Ive had dogs for over 40 years and they have done everything from eating a frozen chicken defrosting on the side bones and all and were fine.
Monitor him
Offer lots of fresh water. Maybe give him rice and boiled chicken/scrambled egg for next few days that will be easy on his little tum.

JSmithIloveyou · 09/09/2023 22:26

They have the sodium taken out of them while being dried.

Not the same. Show me a tin of dog food that contains pork?
You need to educate yourself.
My friend gave her dog cooked gammon it got pancreas disease from it and died

Pancreatitis can be caused by lots of different things.

A tiny bit of pork (which the dog didn't even eat) won't be harmful to the vast majority of dogs.

Please don't scaremonger - it's not helpful or kind.

SpamFrittersYouSay · 09/09/2023 22:50

Your dog will be fine. Might have the squits.

Except pancreatitis is linked to fat, not salt.

Your 'friends' dog is not an evidence base.

drivinmecrazy · 10/09/2023 08:14

He's absolutely fine. The vet said that pancreatitis would be highly unlikely IF he'd eaten the whole thing.
And had he scoffed the lot he might have had a danger of a blockage.
As it is he's had no side affects, you live and learn.
At least now I know the service from his insurance works well 😂

What bollocks. Plain cooked pork is absolutely safe for dogs. Are you seriously saying you have never seen dogs being given bits of sausage for training/treats? Every single vet I've been to has recommended I wrap medication in a piece of ham. Butternut box do a variety of fresh pork dog food. My little one wolfs this one down. Awful of you to try and scare the OP when she has come on panicking for advice.

Glad all is well with your pup @drivinmecrazy ☺️ Another one coming on to say pork is ok. My late dog was diagnosed with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (not to be confused with pancreatitis) and, on the vets suggestion, ate raw pigs pancreas everyday (along with digestive enzymes) to manage his condition.

Toooldtoworry · 10/09/2023 08:49

My dogs eat raw. Pork is one of the proteins they eat. None of them (one is 9) have any health conditions, least of all pancreatitis.

Mariposista · 10/09/2023 08:59

Is he a labrador by any chance? They just eat everything don’t they. Mine ate 4 face masks before he reaches his first birthday - all now accounted for 💩💩💩

andrainwillmaketheflowersgrow · 10/09/2023 09:08

I wonder if @JSmithIloveyou will come back and apologise for scare-mongering and telling everyone they were wrong Confused

Four face masks?! Bloody hell
They are such greedy - but wonderful - dogs.

Tell me about it… it was when people were chucking them on the floor in parks etc and he would find one and scoff it before we even saw it.
That said he didn’t ever steal food - he knew he would be in trouble if he did that. But if you offer him any, it’s an ‘eat first, ask questions later’ policy.

drivinmecrazy · 10/09/2023 09:50

He's not a Lab, he's a Weimaraner who's almost 5ft when he stands up so can easily grab any thing off the kitchen counters.
Luckily he only steals food so fortunate in that regard!

The only real risk to dogs in general with raw pork is the same as it is for humans; tapeworms, and the risk is not that much more elevated than in any other raw meat. As long as your dog is wormed regularly, there’s nothing to worry about.
When considering whether something dogs have eaten is going to be a problem, first is the what: anything with xylitol in it can be an immediate problem, but it depends on how much was eaten (one chewing gum isn’t likely going to kill a dog, but a whole pack will) anything meat based isn’t going to be a problem in many cases at all, even grapes and chocolate, the two most famous no-nos for dogs have varying levels of toxicity on a case by case basis. My aunts dog ate grapes all the time, and never showed any signs of it making her unwell, because the level of tartaric acid in the particular grapes she was eating must have been low, you could even argue that’s why she chose those particular grapes. Chocolate toxicity depends on the amount of cocoa in the chocolate, most commercial milk chocolate is made from cocoa butter, which has negligible levels of cocoa, to the point that an entire pack of Cadbury Oreo crunchy melts biscuits is less dangerous to a dog than a single square of dark chocolate.

I have to add that the service we used to call the vet was Agria through their app.
Just checked my emails and seen that they sent a full written report of the call and the advice given.
It's an amazing service (based on our one experience) and is free with our insurance.
Very reassuring, especially on a Saturday afternoon when our vets are shut! 😃

OP posts:
Girlwithapple · 10/09/2023 11:39

That is reassuring @drivinmecrazy we are with Agria too and haven't needed to use that service, yet!

Cheeesus · 10/09/2023 11:43

What sodium is in pork? Are you confusing pork with pork products such as gammon/bacon/ham?
