Stupid question about bins

Losingmymind85 · 07/09/2023 08:51

We're new to having a dog and as a puppy, he's pooing lots.
We're bagging and putting directly into the garden/food waste wheelie bin.
It stinks to absolute high heaven.
Is there some easy way to reduce the smell? What works?? Bin only gets collected every two weeks.

Take the bags to your nearest dog bin. Faeces should not go in garden waste or food bins.

Losingmymind85 · 07/09/2023 08:55

We don't have any dog bins near us. Only option would be putting them in a street bin 10m walk away.

It definitely shouldn't be in your garden or food waste bin!

It goes in general waste. We have a large tub we keep behind our shed where it's cool and out the sun which we put bagged waste into. Then transferred into the general waste bin on collection day.

Yes, we have an Addis plastic bin with a black bin liner in it, hidden in a corner of the garden. It gets double wrapped and put it with the black bin rubbish.
Its not suitable for food or garden waste, or to put on the compost.

Losingmymind85 · 07/09/2023 08:59

Our council has garden waste and food waste in the same bin. Does it not count as garden waste?

Definitely isn't garden waste. Friend had a letter from the council threatening to stop picking her bin up as she'd been putting it in garden waste

Thanks folks. We'll use the small bin caddy and take it out the the street bin each night.

Glad I asked!

It goes in general waste. Burnt or landfill.

You can bury a bit of it in your garden if you have any plants that like acid soil. You can flush it down your own loo too. You need to be careful of all the extra germs and parasites dogs harbour in their guts so give the loo an anti Bac wiperound afterwards

And, as I mentioned, once your pup is out doing nice, long walks and pooing there rather than at home, the problem will right itself

Don't count on this, it depends on the dog. We have two and the majority of poos still happen in the garden.

BigBundleOfFluff · 07/09/2023 09:41

I use a fox proof small caddy in the garden and transfer it to landfill when needed.
I find that if you leave the poo for 10 mins before picking up, the worst of the smell will have gone before you have bagged it.
The small caddy I use is actually sold as a compost bin - it doesn't smell at all and I'm paranoid about smells.

Mrsjayy · 07/09/2023 09:45

My parents were given a "naughty sticker" for putting poo in the garden /food bin so had to stop

I put mine in general waste it really stinks but we have no other option when he goes in the garden we don't have any red poopbins in our area.

dementedpixie · 07/09/2023 09:46

It's certainly not garden or food waste. Garden waste is plant matter like grass or tree cuttings. And you wouldn't eat it so its not food waste.

Losingmymind85 · 07/09/2023 09:56

@dementedpixie yep. Learned that upthread. It's an honest mistake that I'm fixing.

I've a galvanised bin that shuts tightly to keep smells in and flies out in garden, but previously used the glass wheelie bin as didn't need it. Put inside one of the big dog food sacks as sturdy to lift out when full to chuck lot in or tip into binliner in the household waste night before collection, as putting individual poobags in risks them bursting when other stuff gets added. You can also shovel multiple poos in big bag that will tie up.

Here you can stick poobags in any council bin it doesn't have to be specific dog one so use those on a walks, but I'd not use to dump home poops in them as if we all did that they'd be full well before councils scheduled pick up and then would have to carry poobags all the way home on walks which is worse.

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 07/09/2023 10:55

FGS it's not garden waste!

Faeces from carnivores should never be used in the garden or as a source of compost. Would you put your own shit in the garden waste bin?

andrainwillmaketheflowersgrow · 07/09/2023 11:14

Ours gets double bagged in scented poo bags and goes into the black bin. I've never noticed a smell.

IngGenius · 07/09/2023 11:21

Do Not put it down the loo as suggested above! UK water treatment does not kill some parasites that are present in dog poo which can harm humans

Floralnomad · 07/09/2023 11:25

I keep a separate small bin in the garden which has a bin bag in it . Anything I bag goes in there and then that gets put in the general waste bin when it goes out ( fortnightly) . We don’t have an issue with smells and our dog only poos in the garden once a day normally . What are you feeding @Losingmymind85 as my dogs poo barely smells at all .

That’s revolting.

BarrelOfOtters · 07/09/2023 11:33

It is a short term problem. Ours hardly ever poos in the garden now only in extremis. She holds on till her first walk of the day. We just pop in general waste bin and it is collected fortnightly and cleaned by a cleaning company the same day. So a bit stinky in high summer but not too bad.
