Does anyone understand why my ddog is being weird?

My dog Melody is a Border Collie. She's 9 and a ball of energy. Very clever and loves any human attention

But she has started being really strange for the last 9 days doing things she hasn’t done before
My DP has been working away since the 21st and that sometimes makes her a bit depressed and she goes off her food but this time her mood is perfect, she is a happy and is finishing a meal once a day

However

She is nosing her bowl around the kitchen floor. Twice she has knocked the food on the floor but kept nosing the bowl around
She is moving her cuddly toys around the house at night. They will start off scattered and she will pile them in one place, then pick a different place and move them all there (there's 6 toys)
She has started howling at 22:30 the past 5 nights
Panting but not through thirst
The pillow she uses in the hall is getting dragged from room to room
She has scraped my hall carpet to shreds in one place. It's threadbare now and each morning I am having to cut more of it away

She isn’t on her break as she was in heat around 8 weeks ago

I just don’t understand does anyone speak dog?

Some sort of phantom pregnancy?
It sounds like she is nesting of sorts but that might not be typical.
This us a very wild guess!

Branster · 05/09/2023 23:36

What a beautiful girl!!!!

smashburger · 05/09/2023 23:40

Yes I did wonder about phantom pregnancy. Do I need to do anything? I'm keeping extra water out, she is still playing is eating better than usual

I'm loving that she's not sad this time dads gone but baffled as to why she leaves all the strange behaviours for me! 😂

She’s 9 and not spayed?
Not always phantom pregnancy. It can be really dangerous
pyometra is awful and deadly v quickly

What a beautiful girl!!!!

Thank you Branster ❤️

She is beautiful inside and out. She knew I was pregnant 2 days before I did. She spent my whole pregnancy by my side and has such a mothering nature. She's been by my ds side since we brought him home from the hosp and the two are best buddies

I didn't have her as a puppy. She came into my life at 5 but DP said when she was about 2 she had a phantom pregnancy and nested in a wardrobe! So she has form....

That's her when dp got her as a puppy
And a photo of her 'baby' that she's going around with. It has the same markings in the same places as her 😂

No @DaughterNo2 is that not usual?

Is it not ok for her to not be spayed?

OP posts:
PinkFootstool · 05/09/2023 23:55

@smashburger I'd say unusual for a dog not to be spayed. All my animals have been female and I don't want to deal with a pyometra infection, they are frequently fatal. Or puppies / kittens - it doesn't take long for that to happen, a quick loss from sight or a missed season etc.

CassiniG · 05/09/2023 23:56

She should have been done as pyometra is a horrible and painful thing for a dog to suffer.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 05/09/2023 23:59

This sounds exactly like my friend’s daschund phantom pregnancy ( and she had been neutered).

smashburger · 06/09/2023 00:00

Oh no @PinkFootstool I don't know about any of these
I inherited her as a dog and she had been my DPs with his ex before. I've never had a dog before, she moved in with me and my cat
DP kept saying he wanted her to have puppies and have a little mini Mel but it never happened. I didn't know it harmed them to not be dressed

OP posts:
DaughterNo2 · 06/09/2023 00:00

Pyometra is shocking and kills quickly, 48 hours approx.

smashburger · 06/09/2023 00:01

How long did your ddog's last @Allthegoodnamesarechosen?
Did she scrape the floor?

OP posts:
smashburger · 06/09/2023 00:02

Is she now too old to get dressed?
I don't want her to get this Pyometra!

OP posts:
smashburger · 06/09/2023 00:04

@CassiniG is it too late to have her dressed? I know people do it usually as puppies

OP posts:
DaughterNo2 · 06/09/2023 00:04

Then u need to get ur dog to a vet within the next few hours to be checked over

smashburger · 06/09/2023 00:22

@DaughterNo2 she doesn't have any of the symptoms for Pyometr but do you mean take her to have be spayed?

OP posts:
greenspaces4peace · 06/09/2023 00:50

i'd also look into dental discomfort.
we thought our dog was going senile (12 yr old airedale), ended up it was dental issues.

andrainwillmaketheflowersgrow · 06/09/2023 07:12

She needs to see a vet today - to make sure this is "just" a phantom pregnancy and nothing more serious.

Then you really must book her in to be spayed. The risk of pyometra increases each time they go into season and you don't always see any symptoms until it's too late. It's a killer and so many people don't seem to know anything about it.

PinkFootstool · 06/09/2023 08:11

Get her to the vets ASAP to be checked up, and discuss spaying while you're there. They can talk you through pyometra risks and spaying risks etc.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 06/09/2023 08:18

It sounds very much like a phantom pregnancy. I don’t know much about this pyrometra as I have a boy dog but I’d take her to the vets to get checked out.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 06/09/2023 08:25

I agree. Get her booked into vets immediately. We nearly lost our beautiful lab to pyometra. Don’t wait until symptoms to get more severe.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 06/09/2023 08:28

‘She has started howling at 22:30 the past 5 nights
Panting but not through thirst’

Looking back at you OP why the hell have you ignored these signs for so long. You know your dog well enough to know this is far from usual. Have you booked her in yet?

CassiniG · 06/09/2023 08:42

There isn't a limit to how old a dog can be to be spayed but your vet would do a health check first.

Dogs are classed as being senior at age 7 so you really should have been taking her at least once a year for a check up and to keep an eye on her teeth.
