Any fellow greyhound owners here?

I'm gazing at my lovely boy as I type. He's passed out after a day on the beach. Farting quietly and slowly gassing me to death (we're on holiday so he's had a few more cheeky morsels than he normally would).

I was just thinking how lucky we were to find him. Such a gentle affectionate soul. Lovely with other dogs. Happy to go anywhere with us, as long as he has something soft to lie on.

Also turns into a different dog on the beach. I think the sand must remind him of racing. And all the smells. He's never more playful and zoomy than at the seaside.

Would love to hear about the Mumsnet pack of greyhounds and sighthounds. 😊

I am not a dog owner or fan really but if I had to get a dog I’d get a greyhound. I love their shy but bonkers nature. Enjoy him op. He sounds lovely. I wish I could recapture that joy of zooming I had in my youth.

VeridicalVagabond · 28/08/2023 19:23

We have an elderly greyhound (as well as a couple of othe sighthounds) and they really are the most wonderful dogs.

He's the sweetest, most affectionate, silliest creature I've ever met. Dumb as a rock of course but that adds to his charm I think.

I've never met a dog less suited to being a lapdog than him, but he definitely thinks he is one. I can't sit on a sofa without him crawling on me for a cuddle. It's like cuddling a bag of elbows but how can you say no?

I'm a sighthound convert for life, any future dogs will also be lanky weirdos.

I'm not an expert by any means (he's my first and I had to wait over 15 years for him due to life circumstances being unsuitable for a dog) but they do seem to be a very unique and quirky breed. Far too quick on their feed for their tiny brains.

Thanks for a lovely post. :)

@VeridicalVagabond

Lanky weirdos! 😂

Yes, dumb as a rock is my boy to a T. But agree it adds to the charm.

Also never knew dogs could be fussy eaters until I got him (I grew up with greedy Labradors so that was my frame of reference).

I'm jealous yours is a lap dog. Mine will come on the sofa occasionally and I am always thrilled when he does. He does give good cuddles though. Likes to put his head onto my chest and bury his face into me. 😍

My sister has a retired racer. She is getting on now but in her day won her previous owners lots of money. She got rewarded by being burnt with cigarettes before being dumped.

She is not my kind of dog - I am a bit more into the bonkers ones (terriers and lively hounds) but she is gorgeous. She is gentle, laid back, funny and just happy to 'be'. She is an old soul and despite her treatment at the hands of people, so wonderfully trusting and affectionate with their two children (who are not allowed to bother her).

Over the time she has learnt the chickens aren't lunch and that being alone is ok (they struggled for a long time with SA with her) and is a lovely companion.

Mmhmmn · 28/08/2023 19:36

Aw bless him. Lovely, lovely dogs.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 28/08/2023 19:54

Here’s our last pointy nose. She loved dressing up 😂. Lost her over a year ago and haven’t had it in us to get another as yet. But we will. We always thought we were Labrador people. And we had lots of those, but this little one worked her way in to our hearts ❤️. Such a drama Queen, would fling herself to the floor and do the greyhound death scream should so much as a leaf blow past her when our on a walk. Aww, miss her.

I’ve got a lurcher (whippet/terrier) so I think I’ve got the best of both worlds - the loving, adoring, gentle & loyal nature of the whippet with the slightly nuttier and more trainable nature of the terrier - I like my dogs to have a bit more about them in the brains department than most greyhounds I’ve ever met. Dumb as a rock is about right, but you’re right - they are lovely dogs ❤️

Oh yes, the food. In the end, thanks to the legacy of a racing diet, her pancreatitis (and having only four teeth left) meant I had to make her fresh beef mince and rice every single morning (boak). We used to buy about 5kg of beef mince from our local farm shop every week (money off for the bulk buy). They never once asked DH why he bought so much mince. They have thought we REALLY liked Spag Bol. We’re vegetarians.

eatingpopcorn · 28/08/2023 20:03

They are the best! Barely make a peep, walk so gently on the lead sometimes I have to check we are still attached to one another, patient and so gentle with our toddler (and very gracious at being pipped off the top spot once he came along). I used to love all dogs but since getting our grey shout 6/7 years back to be honest I can't imagine ever wanting to own anything else. We look after friends greyhounds sometimes, as well as other friends dogs and the long snooted speed noodles are always my favourite by a country mile. Also they have the best zoomies

theluckiest · 28/08/2023 20:10

We adopted an ex-racer a couple of years ago. I was reluctant at first when I met him as he is MASSIVE!!!!

He is the love of my life. He loves nothing more than a belly rub and an ear tickle of his super-silky ears. He is a gentle giant and lets you know when he wants attention by leaning on you.

The only downsides are that he eats a lot of disgustingly stinky fish and takes up most of the bed (I know, I know...but he's so warm and cuddly). Laziest boy in the world but just adorable.

RuthW · 28/08/2023 20:11

I have three. I'm not a dog lover but greyhounds just aren't dogs!

BitOutOfPractice · 28/08/2023 21:10

@theluckiest oh yes the lean. It’s just adorable isn’t it?

Letsnotargue · 28/08/2023 21:16

I’m on my third greyhound - all different personalities but also so similar.

Our current boy can be a bit reserved unless it’s food or walk time, but I’ve been away for a couple of days and he was so pleased to see me when I came home. He’s spent the day sitting right next to me, requesting fuss. I think all my future dogs will be greyhounds.

We lost our elderly greyhound two years ago at the age of 15. They are the best dogs

DivaDroid · 28/08/2023 21:29

We lost our noodle horse in Jan this year 😭
Not quite ready for another. They are the best, most stupid bag of elbows you can have tho 🥰

Greyhounds are just wonderful! We've shared our home and sofa with three huge ex racers and each has been fantastic in their own quirky way. Our current hound is getting on a bit now, but he's still absolutely gorgeous and so gentle. They truly are the best!

This is James. Apart from DS he is the best thing in my life. His farts are grim and he sleeps 22 hours a day. I adore him. Especially when he folds himself up into a mass of legs and paws.

I'm staying with my DS who has a lovely rescue greyhound. Doesn't fart - apparently because on raw diet. So affectionate with the softest head and just leans against you. Calm and restful.

CloakOfNope · 28/08/2023 21:42

Here's ours, we only collected her today!

She's coped incredibly well with all the new home newness considering she only retired in June. I think she had a good first day - she seems to like her new humans, the toys are lots of fun, and my 3yo giggles when she licks his ears which apparently is fun for both of them.

And now I'm sat on the kitchen floor with her while she settles for the night

Bless them all, we have had lots of sighthounds and now borrow our daughter's hairy boy for cuddles.

StEtienne93 · 28/08/2023 21:55

I have a 9 year old girl. She's so very beautiful, yet goofy! Adopted her when she was 3 and she was so timid. She's not timid anymore, loves people and all other dogs. On Wednesday, she has to go and some teeth removed at the vet. I'm so worried about her going under anaesthetic. She's been my rock since i separated from my husband. I'm trying to stay positive but I can't help but feel so panicked that something will go wrong. Paws crossed all will be fine for my lovely girl.

EachandEveryone · 28/08/2023 22:02

I love them and often think when i live in a proper house I will rescue one. I have cats though and Im not sure if thats a good combo?

Strawberrypicnic · 29/08/2023 17:00

Ooh I will join this thread, we have a huge gangly black boy and we love him more every day! He is the perfect pet - laid back, funny, quirky, affectionate, adaptable. Being so big, he gets a lot of attention from little kids out and about and he is always super gentle with them (we always supervise of course and never allow them to make him feel uncomfortable). I recommend a greyhound to everyone I meet - yes, it took a while for him to settle in and gain his confidence but he has done an incredible job given that he had only known life inside the racing kennels until 4 years of age! Sighthound owners are a lovely community, too.

Love seeing everyone's pics!!
