What food do you feed your gun dog breed

I know this has been done to death but would appreciate suggestions.
Preferably not raw food cos don't have the freezer space.
Have a seven month old Weimaraner who's currently on tails.com.
Not really happy with it and price has shot up so time to change.

Not really worried by the cost just that they seemed to 'tailor' his food each month which realistically just meant feeding him more of the same.

He's an active dog in good health.

So what do you feed similar breeds?

Our working lab has Aldi’s version of Forthglade trays

Does that not work out really expensive?

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 22/08/2023 20:38

I used to feed my GSP on Millie's Wolfheart or WorkingHPRs, but both have gone up in price. I now feed him Burgess' which I buy on Amazon. He seems to like it just as much and I've seen no decline in his well-being.

SummerSazz · 22/08/2023 20:41

I have a very fussy gun dog - went off raw and then Forthglade.

She's quite sensitive and now on Carnilove and she adores it.

SuperheroBirds · 22/08/2023 21:00

We’re another vote for Millie’s Wolfheart. Mine have been on the obedience flavour for a few years. They’ve also had the Riverside flavour in the past. On the whole, they do best with fish based food and treats, and avoid chicken and pork

Whyohwhyohwhy123 · 22/08/2023 21:09

Supadog chicken and tins of chappy. 13 very fit and active. He does like leftovers and gets them if they’re suitable so there is always something different on his dinner. He also steals from the children and the cat if he can and will raid shopping bags and pack lunches. Last week he ate the sandwiches and the cling film and is absolutely fine.

EffortlessDesmond · 22/08/2023 21:10

I am actually quite astonished by the sheer weight of votes for Forthglade. I always thought it was just a local thing. However, thirty years of dog owning and feeding have always brought me back to it. The local feed merchant sells it by the ton, so we can't all be wrong.

Lightningrain · 22/08/2023 21:12

We used to feed Millie’s Wolfheart but her poos were never great in the afternoons. We tried a few of the top quality kibbles all with the same result (check the all about dog food website as someone else mentioned for ratings for each food).

We ended up switching to raw which I was reluctant to do due to freezer space and what I thought was extra hassle but I wouldn’t go back now. Her poos are solid, small and don’t smell horrific 99% of the time. My DSis’ Labrador fed on kibble is a smaller dog and his poos are three times the size of our dog’s. He also goes 3-4 times a day compared to once or twice so there’s obviously a lot more waste produced with dry food. If we can’t feed raw for any reason (usually when on holiday) we use the Forthglade trays which she seems to do pretty well on.

I think it’s probably worth trying a decent rated food within budget and see how the dog does on it.

Spanielsarepainless · 22/08/2023 21:19

My young Labrador is on a salmon and rice food (kibble) made by Pero but sold under our farm shop's own label.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 22/08/2023 21:21

Do check Allaboutdogfood for nutritional values, but honestly they’re all individuals and so some will like and do well on something others won’t. What I would say is, regardless of the base food, we have given all of ours meat and fish/fish skin and fruit/vegetables on top of their food (only in their bowl and only at meal times) which I think helps with adding interest and nutrition. Foods we’ve used: Orijen, Millie’s, Canagan and Bentleys.

I’ve got a lab who doesn’t work but is from working lines. She has butternut box. She likes the variety of a different food every day. She did well on skinners when a pup but got bored of the same thing and would stop eating it

bingohandjob · 22/08/2023 21:39

Working line black lab - he's in excellent condition (weight, glossy coat, lovely temperament) he has Guru and bloody loves it. We order from here as it's the free delivery (they are a great, reliable shop). You can add some warm water to create a gravy (that he loves) and moisten to put in Kongs etc https://www.pet-shopper.co.uk/static/Guru-Cold-Pressed-Dog-Food

Golden retriever here. He was on Millies Wolfheart but have changed to Wainwright's (a mix of both wet and dry food) and he's doing very well on it.

OrlandointheWilderness · 22/08/2023 22:17

My working spaniels are on skinners field and trial through the shooting season and field and trial maintenance through summer when they aren't doing as much. My DPs lab who is a working dog is on symply as he has a sensitive stomach.

roycroppersshopper · 22/08/2023 22:22

Got a 10kg cockapoo (show cocker/minature poodle) on Millie's Wolf Heart. Most other stuff upsets her stomach or gives her colitis.

Occasionally add a Forthglade tray, Butchers tray or Scrumbles tray.

mintbiscuit · 22/08/2023 22:26

Lab. Raw meat when on offer inc bones, necks. Nutriment raw food with third butchers tinned food mixed in to keep cost down as base food.

Supplemented by human leftovers/food that are dog appropriate eg. Eggs, fish, steamed/raw veges and fruit, roast meat.

Complete raw food can be £££ so we try to economise with the above.

never ever kibble. I cannot stand the farts and poo!

In terms of ‘tailoring’ food. I know people will disagree, but I think it’s a marketing gimmick. Dogs evolved to sit around with the family and eat whatever got thrown their way. Dog food generally is probably like baby food- convenient but wholly unnecessary.

Agree with this.

averythinline · 22/08/2023 22:54

millies wolfheart here as well... Riverside flavour at the moment!
like being able to call them directly and discuss whats suitable..

TheSecretaryBird · 23/08/2023 09:08

Our dogs (who do flyball and agility) are on Millie’s Wolfheart dry food and Natures Menu country hunter tins. I usually manage to find a discount code for the NM order and get free next day delivery. We also use Eden to fill wobble kongs / training as it’s a great food but adds up with 3 dogs. They also have salmon oil, kefir and some homemade frozen toppers on their dinners too.
I did spend a lot of time on the AADF website comparing different foods.

MissRainbowBrite · 23/08/2023 09:23

Our springer is 9 now and has been on Millie's Wolfheart since she was a pup. It suits her well and the price isn't expensive for what you get. We switch between the 60/40 mix flavours and she likes them all.

Sushilover14 · 02/09/2023 00:38

Doberman here. Used to feed Millie’s but can no longer afford it, now feeding skinners salmon and rice.

justasking111 · 02/09/2023 01:06

Our lab puppy came with a brand of food. Her poos were sloppy, she scratched a lot and wasn't keen on it. Changed her over to Arden grange sensitive puppy, fish and potatoes etc. The itching stopped and poop firmed up.

We've always given our dogs leftovers to augment which they enjoy.

Oopsadaisysgranny · 04/09/2023 03:17

Challenge dog food . It’s fish based my dogs always look great on this . I have Gordon and Irish setters that we show . Including crufts winners

Riverlee · 06/10/2023 17:44

Labrador. He has a mixture of Burns Alert food and Butternut food. Went of his kibble (Autarky) hence now do 50:50, which he’s fine with (and too expensive to do 100% Butternut).

Shopper727 · 06/10/2023 17:51

Retriever, has been on burns, didn’t agree then wainwrights also didn’t agree but seems fine with james welbeloved lamb and rice can’t have duck or poultry so limited. The natural hub was good too but he went right off that sadly. He gets forthglade meat too. Our old retriever was on royal canine but he developed an intolerance so moved on to eukanuba - guide dog so not my choice. When we took him on ourselves he ate james welbeloved and pretty much anything else he could get his furry face round - nicknamed the hoover

SpamhappyTootsie · 06/10/2023 17:51

James Wellbeloved for our lab, with a wet pouch in the morning feed. Also loves a carrot and some cucumber during the day.
