What food do you feed your gun dog breed

I know this has been done to death but would appreciate suggestions.
Preferably not raw food cos don't have the freezer space.
Have a seven month old Weimaraner who's currently on tails.com.
Not really happy with it and price has shot up so time to change.

Not really worried by the cost just that they seemed to 'tailor' his food each month which realistically just meant feeding him more of the same.

He's an active dog in good health.

So what do you feed similar breeds?

Two working Labs here. They have a tray of Forthglade each morning and a bowl of Skinners working kibble with half a tin of sardines or a raw egg at night. Plus as many apple cores, toast crusts, dropped custard creams they can convince the kids to chuck their way, and any cat food they can get to. Sometimes a roast/ bbq on Sundays ( with crumble for dessert). They are very active and slim, full of energy.

In terms of ‘tailoring’ food. I know people will disagree, but I think it’s a marketing gimmick. Dogs evolved to sit around with the family and eat whatever got thrown their way. Dog food generally is probably like baby food- convenient but wholly unnecessary.

Hellohah · 22/08/2023 15:20

I'm on a Labrador group. I feed raw but so many people have recommended Millie's Wolfheart.

There is a website called All About Dog Food which breaks down the quality of pretty much every dog food.

Newpeep · 22/08/2023 15:22

Most working gundogs I know are fed Millie's wolfheart or Skinners.

I feed MWH 70:30. I have been very pleased with it so far (12 month old very active terrier)

PinkFootstool · 22/08/2023 15:29

Mines a Heinz 57, but she's on dry Harringtons - I flip between the lamb salmon and turkey for a bit of variety for herShe's 28kg of pure muscle so would bankrupt me to feed her raw which would be my preference.

She also has a small amount of wet food dolloped on top and she's on a turmeric mix plus a daily Metacam dose for arthritis. All mixed in for ease!

This is basically what my vet told me.

My lab came raw food as a puppy and he had terrible gut issues - very bloated and gassy, silvery poos.
We put him on normal kibble (we use Dr Johns) and just normal tin food and he instantly improved.

The vet said that there can be advantages of tailed feeding and raw feeding when a dog is high agility and always on the go, but for household pets who spend their days lounging around and going on a daily walk - supermarket stuff is as much as is needed.

Consequently, we have since put ours on Aldi dry and tinned food how he's an adult and he's always getting compliments on his shiny coat and white teeth.

Working Cocker on Forthglade trays from Costco and a few drops of Salmon Oil

YouveCatToBeKittenMe · 22/08/2023 15:34

I have a springer. She was on Arden Grange like my previous springer but i changed her onto James Wellbeloved as she kept having ear issues and i thought it was worth a try to see if it solved it. The ear issues cleared up but it may be just coincidence.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 22/08/2023 16:09

Spaniels here

Wainwrights grain free kibble and either forthglade or wainwrights wet

Absolutely - just feed what suits your dog.

Tulipvase · 22/08/2023 16:12

My lab is also on forthglade. She used to have a very sensitive stomach but we have had no issues since she has been on this. Vet said to keep her on whatever we are feeding her as it obviously suits her.

needtonamechangeforthis1 · 22/08/2023 16:15

Raw or fresh food.
Would never contemplate using kibble. We don't eat the same crap food every day so I don't expect my dogs to.

tizwozliz · 22/08/2023 16:32

We feed essentials dry food (superior living) with something on top for interest, e.g. forthglade 90%, fish4dogs tins, scrambled egg, a bit of what we're having for dinner if suitable.

I often get asked what they eat as they're shiny but tbh I think that's genetics as much as anything. Older one is a fussy bum and we tried a few different things with her and she looked equally as good on all of them.

Neither of them seem to have sensitive digestions, older one stole and ate 100g of butter as a pup with no after effects whatsoever!

Millie's Wolfheart here. The 70:30 range - I vary it. Plus a bit of a forthglade tray or can of tuna, egg, sardines etc.
Toast crusts, bits of apple and anything else she can scran off us.
Golden Retriever. Gun dog yes but was built for comfort, not speed.

EffortlessDesmond · 22/08/2023 16:49

Another Forthglade-fed Lab here! Plus Joint Aid and Metacam for arthritis, and a small toyful of Hill Science Diet for play.

IsletsOfLangerhans · 22/08/2023 17:02

English Pointer - we feed her Millie’s wolfheart riverside mix plus 1/3 can of butcher’s tripe loaf or sardines. Tried others, but always come back to Millie’s.

Alwaystheplusone · 22/08/2023 17:48

My lab has Forthglade cold pressed food

EdithStourton · 22/08/2023 18:18

Two working line gundogs here. Older one has always done very well on Skinner's, gets a higher protein version in winter. Younger one is on a pricier dry food for various reasons. They both get either cheap wet dog food on top, or cheap sardines, or whatever (last night's leftover rice with bacon fat from breakfast etc).

How much they get is adjusted according to activity level and waistline.

Most people I know with working gundogs feed Skinner's, partly because it's local to us and sponsors every gundog scurry, working test and field trial in the area. The dogs look good on it.

wellthatwasunexpected · 22/08/2023 18:22

I have a weim who has just turned 11. He was on Autarky adult for years until he became prone to pancreatitis and is now on Burns chicken & rice.

MillWood85 · 22/08/2023 18:23

Working spaniels in our house. They get Forthglade cold pressed dry kibble, and a wet topper of Natures Menu Country Hunter.

Both have got endless energy, good poop and shiny soft coats. Eldest was very prone to colitis and this is the best food they've been on.

DD has got a working cocker pup and she's on Millie's Wolfheart.

Wolfcub · 22/08/2023 18:27

Spaniel - Acana Regionals. Like someone else up thread he came on raw and just would not eat it.

MimsyBorogroves · 22/08/2023 18:53

My lab was previously on Millie's and did very well on it - however unfortunately it is now beyond our affordability.

We moved to Skinner's, and he couldn't seem to keep his weight on. He is now on Dr Johns, and whilst his coat isn't quite as shiny as it was on Millie', he is doing well.

He also gets sardines/an egg/chicken feet as a topper and we supplement with green lipped mussel.

Newpeep · 22/08/2023 19:11

The beauty of a 6 Kg dog if you can feed anything 😂

We mix some wet in with the Millie’s along with fruit, veg, bits and bobs that are dog safe. She stopped eating Forthglade when she was about 8 months which is a shame as it’s a good food. Currently the wet favourite is Barking Heads. She only has a dessert spoon or so each meal so not too expensive.

Dabralor · 22/08/2023 19:46

Our working labradors all have Skinner's but will always enjoy a good salmon skin once a week.

On their birthdays and on Christmas day they have a goose egg, because they are wonderful little dogs.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 22/08/2023 19:50

Our working lab has Aldi’s version of Forthglade trays and as much human food as he can get his paws on! He doesn’t like dry food and it made his poos massive and gave him the runs.
