What sort of dog do I want can anyone help with breeds?

Wanttogetapuppy · 02/08/2023 22:25

I’m looking for a puppy and would like one with the following characteristics

-hypoallergenic (some kind of poodle ?)
-small breed
-good calm temperament
-doesn’t need lots of exercise
-no shedding/as minimal ‘dog’ smell as possible
-easy to train
-good with children

Can anyone advise ? Also where do I find reputable breeders as I want to avoid anything like gumtree etc obviously and to go to somewhere that isn’t a puppy farm
Thankyou !

I think you’d be best with an actual miniature poodle.

Moanycowbag · 02/08/2023 22:50

Bichon might be better than a poodle as poodle can be very active. Not sure any dog is hypoallergenic though.

MySoCalledWife · 02/08/2023 22:50

Are you sure you actually want a dog?

it sounds like you want the least dog-like dog possible 😁

If you or family are allergic, don’t enjoy the prospect of exercising a dog, and want calm…. I’d say a puppy may not be a good idea

Teribus21 · 02/08/2023 22:55

A soft toy sounds like it would suit you. Some of them are quite realistic.

VinEtFromage · 02/08/2023 22:57

Why do you want a dog?

I just thought for a first dog one that doesn’t have high energy or need lots of exercise is better ? DP has wanted a dog for years and ds has been asking for 3 years and I said we can but we need to research and get a dog that’s right for us and from a reputable breeder

Miniature schnauzer would fit

Wanttogetapuppy · 02/08/2023 23:01

VinEtFromage · 02/08/2023 22:57

Why do you want a dog?

DP and ds do. I just want to find the right breed to fit our family as I do know I’ll have some responsibilities too so would like things to be hopefully a easy as possible as I work from home so I will have to be doing a lot !

But pretty much all young dogs will want loads of exercise. It’s a bit of contradiction - and a red flag - to ask about puppies with low exercise needs.

You need to be prepared to commit to at least 1-2 hours of exercise per day in all weathers for even the least energetic breeds.

Wanttogetapuppy · 02/08/2023 23:03

I said to ds 3 years ago that it would be a passing thing and no because he would probably get fed up and it’s a huge responsibility but he’s saved up pocket money , he’s helped out MIL with her dog, we got him a hamster as a test pet to see if he really was responsible and he was amazing , we didn’t need to do a thing he cleaned the cage regularly etc etc so he has proven himself

There are no guarantees that any dog will fit that list.

They all have individual characteristics and personalities imo.

All dogs need time, training and exercise.

All dogs create mess one way or the other and all dogs smell like dogs.

I think you need to be really realistic about if you want a dog tbh.

Yes that amount is fine I think what I want to avoid is really high energy working breeds that need so much more and also breeds that are for more experienced owners I may have worded it wrong !

Lhasa Apso would be a good breed for you. They do need brushing though. You can keep fur short by taking to a dog groomer every 3 months or so.

Thisismynewusername1 · 02/08/2023 23:09

Yorkshire terrier.

cairn terrier.

both underrated, and unpopular so more likely to find a decent breeder.

I have a yorkie and he’s fab. It’s not that he doesn’t need exercise, but he’s not big on walks, preferring to be out in the garden hunting mice with the cat. He’ll also play hunting games so cat toys like the mouse on a stick, catnip mice etc.

i keep mine clipped short to reduce daily grooming, it’s dh and the teenagers leave hair about, not the dog!

WhoaBettyWhite · 02/08/2023 23:12

You and your ds could try being a volunteer dog walker at a local rescue centre, you can take different breeds out for a walk to see what suits your family, I wish everyone did this before rescuing or purchasing a dog/ puppy, it's a great way to figure out which type of breed would fit into your family, it would also give your DS an understanding of the work that's required to take care of a dog.

He’s very good as he helps MIL with her dog every weekend goes on walks with them etc but her dog is a Labrador and a bit too big a breed for us i think

My Jackapoo is the loveliest little dog ever! Doesnt malt, very kind natured, really good with kids, easy to train has his hyper moments but generally a very good well mannered boy.

Is there a register of breeders ? Where do I look

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 02/08/2023 23:32

Cairn terrier
Bedlington terrier
Bichon Frisé
Toy/mini poodle

They'd all be absolutely fine on an hour a day.

Sgtmajormummy · 02/08/2023 23:43

I have a calm mini Schnauzer and he ticks most of your boxes, especially the low shedding and lack of smell. The medium size was crossed with poodles to get the mini.
Ours is a bit wary of toddlers but he’d never bite or be aggressive. Probably our fault for not socializing him with small children. He sleeps most of the day because he gets three good walks and he was easy to train just by praise and pats with the occasional strong “No”.
He has a strong food drive (what’s in the shopping? Anything for me?) and is fixated with stealing just one sock from a pair!

Try champ dogs.

HappiestSleeping · 03/08/2023 00:30

Maybe a whippet or ex racing greyhound? They don't need much exercise and don't shed much. Depends how interactive you want them really?

I would add that when I had my first dog years ago, I thought that walking him in all weathers would be an endurance test, but it is the thing I actually enjoyed most. My latest dog has been the same. I've lost weight and feel better than I have in years. And on top of this he's a great character. They all are in their own way.

wellstopdoingitthen · 03/08/2023 01:36

When we were looking for our first dog our 'want' list wasn't far off yours.

We met & fell in love with with a Greyhound (ex racer) & adopted her 9 years ago.
She is:
Gentle
Quiet (very rarely barks)
Affectionate
Lazy (short walk & lots of snoozing)
Minimum hair drop
Smells very non doggie
Gets on well with our cats

VinEtFromage · 03/08/2023 03:28

@Wanttogetapuppy

do DH & DS not know which breeds they'd like?

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 03/08/2023 06:51

A bichon would fit that list I’d think. VERY popular with puppy farmers as the crosses are popular, so get yourself on champdogs and research breeders carefully, get a name on a list and be prepared to wait.
