Dog toileting command words

spidershavetoomanyknees · 02/08/2023 07:51

The short version is we're picking up our rescue dog this weekend, and at the moment he has a very twee cue word for toileting outside. I'd really like an alternative!

He's fully toilet trained in the sense that he knows how it all works, he doesn't go inside, he has a routine (although I'm expecting some regression in the early days and when we start to get used to his signals and he gets used to us) so he doesn't need to learn how to go from scratch, if that makes sense... but I really cannot stand the thought of standing in a park saying "wee wee time" 😬

Does he even need one? I can see there might be a benefit to having a command word if you're short on time and need them to just take a leak already 🤔

I’ve never felt the need to do this tbh. If you are out on a walk, or putting them out in the garden, they go when they need/want to go.

DustyLee123 · 02/08/2023 07:53

I say ‘wee wee’ and ‘poo poo’ , don’t see the problem 🤔 but then I don’t shout it loud for all to hear.

Saucery · 02/08/2023 07:54

We use “Be quick!” which works for wee and poo. In her own sweet time Hmm but she does know what it means and if she’s fannying about looking for the Perfect Spot it does make her concentrate more and hurry up.

Mrsjayy · 02/08/2023 07:56

I just say go pee, dh wanted a twee word I totally refuse to use it I can't even type it 😂 our dog doesn't need a poop word he's quite regular and we know when he needs.

YourNameGoesHere · 02/08/2023 07:56

I don't think he needs one at all so I would be transitioning to not using one to be honest. He's not a newly toilet training puppy so I can't see any reason he needs a command word to go to the toilet.

Mrsjayy · 02/08/2023 07:58

We just use go pee now when he's faffing about in the garden in first/last thing, you might need the cue so your new dog adjusts to you.

IngGenius · 02/08/2023 08:27

For us it is so useful to have a wee and poo cue. Same as with children if we are going somewhere and they need to wee first. eg visit to vet car journey, going to the pub, for our dogs before they start workin etc

We have "be quick." Some people use "be busy", " Go wee" etc choose what you like!

We also teach them to be happy to wee on all surfaces eg gravel, grass and tarmac.

papasmurfdontpreach · 02/08/2023 09:26

I just say 'toilet' for mine when it's the bedtime wee and I want to be sure she'll go through the night. The rest of the time she'll do it on walks or in the garden whenever she needs

Spanielsarepainless · 02/08/2023 10:17

I say 'hurry up ' for wees, 'clean dog' for poo. Very handy when you stop for a break on a journey and don't want to spend half an hour meandering round the verges of a motorway service station.

blobby10 · 02/08/2023 10:19

We used 'get done' for a wee and 'hurry up' for a poo - the latter because our yellow lab would take forever sniffing out food instead of focussing on the job in hand Grin. plus you can yell it across a field without sounding like a loon!

Some great ideas here - thank you! Loving the variety

We used 'do a wee' and 'do a poo'!
Its useful to have a command word, i didn't use them while out in the park as not needed but if we needed to go out it was useful that you could make sure she had done a poo and/or a wee before you went if she was staying in for a bit.

kwetu · 02/08/2023 13:15

We've always just used 'go pee' that covers poops too, it just a cue that now is the time to relieve yourself

Charis1503 · 02/08/2023 13:15

We just use "go toilet" this way if she looks unsettled at home we can ask "go toilet?" And she gets excited. I toyed with "hurry up" ect but didn't feel I could use this as question. X

Floralnomad · 02/08/2023 13:19

Our dog has a cue word , it’s ‘go quick’ but I never use it on walks he goes when he fancies I only ever use it if I need him to go before bed / going out / getting in the car etc .

I’ve never felt the need to do this tbh. If you are out on a walk, or putting them out in the garden, they go when they need/want to go.

It can be useful sometimes - although they won't poo on command. Can you? 😂

We train in an inside venue for agility and I get my dog to 'have a wee' before we go in so she isn't distracted and uncomfortable. I don't use it anywhere else but could do if we were going anywhere for any length of time where she couldn't wee for example.

Random789 · 02/08/2023 13:23

I just say 'Toilet!'
Would love to know what the twee word is - then we can all suggest anti-twee alternatives that sound sufficiently similar that you could introduce them without confusing the dog too much.

Eyeapple · 02/08/2023 13:24

Do you need to say anything? It is just part of our routine to walk for poos or else he barks if the walk is delayed and we just let him out. before we go anywhere we let him out too in case he needs to pee. He gets up himself over to the door for a bedtime pee and then we let him into his bed. I just realised maybe our dog trained us.

Random789 · 02/08/2023 13:26

It can be really handy. Especially if, say, you are staying in a hotel or some such and you need to get them to wee promptly in a setting they aren't used to.

ThrappleApple · 02/08/2023 13:29

We don't have a word, never felt a need for it. When we've been on car journeys or the like she seems to know that if we walk her over to a bit of grass that's what's expected. If we're going on a long trip we'll just send her out to the garden before we get in the car and again she seems to know what is expected. She won't however wee on concrete or most manmade surfaces, gravel is just about acceptable

Billoddiesbeard · 02/08/2023 13:33

We say "go pee" or "go poo" when she's put in the garden before bed.

Other than that she asks to go out at home or just goes as needed when we're out for a walk.

CuntRYMusicStar · 02/08/2023 13:42

My dog knows 'toilet' and it's very useful for motorway stops etc when he just needs to be quick then back in the car. We also use it for last thing at night to make sure he's not asking to go out again 30 minutes later!

ejbaxa · 02/08/2023 13:46

I use wee wee. Seems to work well! I don't think it's too twee. You could try pee pee so it sounds similar for him?

dogsweetdog · 02/08/2023 13:56

Guide dogs use "busy busy" and "BIG BUSY" (💩)
