Dog toileting command words

spidershavetoomanyknees · 02/08/2023 07:51

The short version is we're picking up our rescue dog this weekend, and at the moment he has a very twee cue word for toileting outside. I'd really like an alternative!

He's fully toilet trained in the sense that he knows how it all works, he doesn't go inside, he has a routine (although I'm expecting some regression in the early days and when we start to get used to his signals and he gets used to us) so he doesn't need to learn how to go from scratch, if that makes sense... but I really cannot stand the thought of standing in a park saying "wee wee time" 😬

Does he even need one? I can see there might be a benefit to having a command word if you're short on time and need them to just take a leak already 🤔

It can be useful sometimes - although they won't poo on command.

Not strictly true. We raise guide dog puppies and once you get an idea of their regular poo times you can get them to go when it suits you to an extent.

My current one only has to see the green poo bag come out and she's like "righto!" I know she goes twice in the morning, before breakfast, late morning, then again in the evening. We want them to do it at home before we go out so I send her out, wave the bag and if there's anything available, she gets on with it!

If Bella is in the house I ask "Do you need a wee?" she will go to the back door then if she does. If she wants to go out she sits at the back door unprompted. In the garden I tell her "Be quick" if I want her to hurry up instead of sniffing every blade of grass first.

The artist character in the lovely Alexander McCall Smith 'Scotland Street' books used the command 'Turner Prize' to get his dog to perform 😉

You can at their normal times but not outside those. They can always squeeze a wee out - ask any dog sport competitor as eliminating in the ring is an elimination!

Police dogs are taught to go on command. The word is ‘empty’.

NewDogOwner · 02/08/2023 14:35

"Toilet"

ColonelSpondleClagnut · 02/08/2023 14:58

We use Hurry Up and I do find it useful before journeys etc.
Also helps to give her the command if we are out somewhere and she's looking a bit unsure if she's allowed to go or not!

Groutyonehereagain · 02/08/2023 15:00

We say izzy wizzy for both.

wetotter · 02/08/2023 15:02

Guide dogs use the term "spend" (as in 'a penny' I assume?)

We use "busy" because it's the word the breeder had started off with, so we just carried on and it's not that bad a term. But I really do prefer "be quick" or "hurry up" as (unbeknownst the the dog) you vent your impatience too!

ColonelSpondleClagnut · 02/08/2023 15:04

We did however toy with "eliminatum!" or "excretio!" or some vaguely HP nonsense 😬

Mrsjayy · 02/08/2023 15:11

Excretio! 😂

My aunt fostered guide dog puppies she used busy busy for her pups.

Lol at Turner Prize and Excretio.
Because I am quite old, I remember a fellow attender at puppy class years ago using 'Margaret Thatcher!'

I had a momentary surge of pity just now for police dogs hearing the stern word 'Empty!' I imagined them snapping out a wee/poo like a fearful soldier jumping to attention.
But I'm sure it's not like that really. I bet police dogs have a pretty wonderful time on the whole.

I don't think he needs one at all so I would be transitioning to not using one to be honest. He's not a newly toilet training puppy so I can't see any reason he needs a command word to go to the toilet.

It comes in very handy.

at night when I want them to go wee, not think it's playtime.

same when travelling to signal a toilet break, not walking or playtime.

when you're ill, people can come & quickly let them out for wee.

before going inside somewhere (vets/cafe/pub/friends) or even places outside you don't want them to do their business, like the beach.

it so so useful, I don't know why people don't train it.

ACurlyWurlyTail · 02/08/2023 15:32

We used to puppy walk traineed guide dogs and the comand to use the toilet was 'busy'

we would say busy DDog and off he would go to do his business

longtompot · 02/08/2023 15:46

The breeder of our dog used 'do wee's!' as the toilet command and we still use it now.

mondaytosunday · 02/08/2023 16:41

I havent used one, and as your dog is trained probably doesn't need it unless it's like out for one second - no one I know has to use it on an actual walk. I say 'go on' if I've sent them out at midnight for a last wee, my friend says 'do your business'.
Just take him out and let nature do it's thing.

I can assure you my ex-husband’s (and by extension, mine 😂) police dogs had a very lovely life indeed. They loved working but were treated like beloved pets the rest of the time.

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 02/08/2023 18:24

We just say "go toilet" - it seems to work well enough.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 02/08/2023 18:40

We just used “toilet” when he was a puppy but we don’t need it now as he’s regular as clockwork. He’ll always go for a wee after breakfast (he’s a Labrador so food trumps anything else) and when I announce “bedtime” he knows to run to the back door. He will only poo on grass but never in his garden so he goes in the field on his walks.

They don't use the word spend, they just call it a spending pen/area. Busy busy is used from puppy stage til forever 💩
