Crates on hot nights

22 degrees here - doesn't feel too warm to be honest but what do you do about crated dogs when it's warm? I'd rather not leave her out of it because she'll think that's the norm but it's got her comfy bed and cover over it to keep it dark

Any advice?

Personally, no I don’t crate if it’s too warm. I’d hate to think she couldn’t find herself somewhere cooler if needed

Fiddlerdragon · 10/06/2023 23:42

Nah. Totally cool to stick your dog in a cage overnight where it can’t move if it needs to. Crack on if it’s your preference 👍

Don't be a twat. I asked for advice on what people do. Maybe take bedding out or use a cooking mat.

Why are you caging your dog for hours at a time? Animals should be free to move around.

Whyohwhyohwhy123 · 10/06/2023 23:53

I think it depends on how long they are in the crate for and what is the temperature in the room they are in. If they are usually in from 8-7, change to 11-5. Is the room cool enough?is moving the crate to a different room better. Are the windows open to allow a through draught?

HoldingTheDoor · 10/06/2023 23:54

Seriously WTF is it with people caging dogs for hours at a time like they're a 1970s budgie?

tillyandmilly · 10/06/2023 23:54

cages are for puppies - not for adult dogs - I presume you have a puppy?

OMG what is wrong with people tonight. Are you seriously telling me that you've never heard of dogs being crated overnight??

She's 11 months and loves her crate

Thank you -advice - just like I asked. Yes she's in a room with open windows and I might get a cooling mat. She's snuggled up in there now so I've left the door open so she can go and lay on the tiles if he wants

No way. Why does anyone stick their dog in a crate anyway? Makes me so sad that people treat a family pet this way. Sad

LittlePickleHead · 11/06/2023 00:09

Loons out tonight. Many dogs are crate trained and actually feel secure and safe in their crate overnight. My dog actively runs to her crate and sits there waiting for us to close the door when we start to turn the lights out.

To Op, if you are worried the room isn't cool enough, can you close the crate but not lock it so she can come out and have a drink if needed? Our dog won't leave the crate even if it's not locked, but I'd rather know she could get out if she needed to in certain circumstances

EbonyRaven · 11/06/2023 00:09

If she is LOCKED in the crate/shut in it/cannot get out, then you are being very unreasonable. Why is she in a crate overnight? Why? Confused

Excitedannie · 11/06/2023 00:10

Oh FFS. Typical Mumsnet. You come on for advice and people keep commenting on something that I didn't ask for.

Lots of people crate, lots don't. You do you. Crating has always suited my puppy at night - she doesn't use it during the day and prefers to roam when left alone.

Don't tell me. Your dog sleeps in your bed doesn't it. Next to you. With its head on the pillow. Absolutely nothing wrong if that's what suits you but like I say, your opinion that I didn't ask for.

Seriously - have you never heard of dogs being carted overnight??? What on earth is wrong with you? If it suits the dog then why wouldn't you?

Loons indeed!!

Thanks. Mines the same - loves her space. Door is open, access to water etc and she can choose where she lays. Smile

And where does it say that crates aren't for adult dogs?

OP posts:
RushieRoo · 11/06/2023 00:21

I think so long as the door is not bolted so they can move elsewhere or get some water if needed it’s fine.

HoldingTheDoor · 11/06/2023 00:29

OMG what is wrong with people tonight. Are you seriously telling me that you've never heard of dogs being crated overnight??

I have yes, I've heard of a lot of bad animal "care" practices and cages with closed doors are utterly shit for animal welfare. I despise crates generally though. I do not understand the obsession with caging dogs. Their use should be reserved for exceptional circumstances, not longterm use and certainly not overnight. I've had numerous dogs and other pets and haven't once had to use a crate.

As for"loons" the real loons are the people who can't deal with the reality of having a dog so feel the need to lock it into a cage overnight. Anyone who locks their dog in a crate overnight, unless it's temporary for medical reasons is a shit owner. If you can't deal with the reality of what having a dog entails then don't get one. They aren't toys to be put away for our convenience at will when they get in the way. Stick with Puppy In My Pocket if you want a caged animal.

FreyaBentos · 11/06/2023 00:33

My GSD has always had a crate, but we took the door off when we bought it. It was just her “own space” as we had other older dogs when she was a baby puppy. I tried to get rid of it about 4 years ago, (it has taken lumps of skin off me😡) but she cried for it, so had to bring it back! Often if you can’t find her in the daytime, then you’ll find her in the crate!
OP, our Ddog is in the kitchen over night, with free access to the concrete floor, the crate or her puffy dog bed, plenty of water and I usually leave a cold carrot for her (good for moisture in warm weather) Never had any issues at all 🐾

Batalax · 11/06/2023 00:35

Ours has water and when it’s really hot we put a fan on nearby for him.

He loves going into his crate at night when we go to bed, although he has the run of the house when we are out in the day. We’ve thought about dropping it but it’s useful when we are on holiday and more importantly it wouldn’t be so stressful at the vets if he ever needed to stay, because he’s used to a crate.

Yes that's what I've done. She can get to the tiled floor if she wants to but I've just check the CCTV and she's snuggled up in her crate. She's oblivious to all my worrying!!!!!

To all the haters on here tonight, some of you clearly have no idea what a dog wants or needs. crates are not a bad thing for dogs assuming they're used to them, they see it as their den/safe place and love having their own space.
