Ticks?!

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 28/05/2023 14:44

I have two dogs who have routine flea annd tick treatment and groomed daily. In the last week EVERY time I’ve groomed one of them I’ve found a tick, not found one on the other ever.
We check them carefully when we get back from walks but I think they may be too small still as don’t find them then when grooming every morning they seem to appear! (the one that’s prone to them has a thick undercoat which isn’t helping!)

Has anyone ever had a dog that seems especially prone to them and is there a spray that works that we could douse him with before/after to get them to leave the poor chap alone?

Ticks are just everywhere. Each year it gets worse

My dogs all walk in the same place but some get ticks more than the others.

Most treatment does not repel ticks just kill them after 24 hours when they fall off.

Seresto collar is meant to be a repellent but ticks will still attach.

Some people use "natural sprays" no idea if they work I doubt it as ticks have super powers to evade everything!

If dogs walk through long grass or roll in the grass have long hair the ticks can cling on easier. My collies with long hair get more ticks than the labs rarely gets any. The wcs closer to the ground can get loads and we check them after every walk and remove them before they have time to attach.

Does indorex kill ticks I though it was just fleas?

You have a lot of ticks in your area, is what you've discovered. So do we.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 28/05/2023 16:18

Thank you. It makes me feel like about a bit less of a shit owner! We live rurally with very little safe street walking available and the grass is so long. I swear this is the worst it’s been!

I have the same, two labs both treated regularly, ones not had a single tick, the other one constantly gets them.

BiteyShark · 28/05/2023 17:15

Lots of ticks here.

Some we see crawling and remove but others that have attached we wait 24 hours when his treatment kills them.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 28/05/2023 17:28

They're everywhere this year. We check after walks and again before bed to get them off - always carry a tick remover too!

Daniki · 28/05/2023 17:51

Ugh so many! My collie is constantly got at least 2 on him I check him every day. I have a
Tic remover and I wipe over with an alcohol wipe after. It's just that time of year unfortunately 😞

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 28/05/2023 17:57

Thanks all. If nothing else it’s made me feel like less of a crap owner! Roll on autumn Wink

Yup, everywhere. Bravecto is the only thing that works for us, and even then it only kills them after they’ve bitten. Horrid things.

Rooses · 28/05/2023 21:47

Does advocate kill off the ticks? My 11 month old lab had 5 on him after a walk in long grass yesterday ☹️

IngGenius · 28/05/2023 21:58

No advocate does not kill ticks.

If you use advocate you will need to add something in to kill the ticks eg a seresto collar or advantix spot on for example. in our experience ticks are getting pretty resistant to advantix.

MissyB1 · 28/05/2023 22:19

We’ve never had a problem before, she’s 7 now and this is the first year I’ve had to keep removing ticks! She has Nexguard on prescription from vet but suddenly I’m finding ticks nearly every day! Bloody hate them 😡

MrsMitford3 · 28/05/2023 22:21

Just wondering where you all are located?

lljkk · 28/05/2023 22:56

I live in Sussex

Klex · 29/05/2023 07:33

Billy No Mates supplement from CSJ worked well for us. Couldn't use Bravecto as a dog had a bad reaction to it

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 29/05/2023 08:12

I’m so glad it’s not just me! And not just me who’s found them AWFUL this year.
Im in West Yorkshire

I'm in Ireland. They're awful and my dog loves the long grass, runs about there in the morning and I'm sure that's where he picks them all up 🤪

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 29/05/2023 08:45

I think this year is really bad. County Durham here. I don't have a dog but I've removed several from the cat (usually 1 or 2 each year) and none of us humans have ever had one yet ds1 has had 2 already plus also had to pull one off one of his mates the same time as his own. My keyring tick remover is seeing a lot of use!

Luckycat1 · 29/05/2023 08:54

My pup loves long grass and rolls around in it. I haven't found any ticks but also haven't been specifically looking. Where do you mostly find them on the dog? Is it more a problem in the countryside where there are sheep and/or deer? Her flea and wormer also kills ticks, but obviously not instantaneously, and she sleeps at the end of my bed 😬

BiteyShark · 29/05/2023 08:59

We are in the south in a high Lyme disease tick area and we walk in the forest with lots of deers so every year is a 'bad' tick year ☹️

I just get used to them crawling on him (and on me) after each walk.
