New puppy nightmare

Is anyone else having a nightmare trying to crate train? I’m on day 3 and feeling like a zombie as I’m running on no sleep 😵‍💫
It’s tough work but I’m trying to remain positive that it will get easier

We tried a crate for a few weeks. Pup cried every night! In the end we were exhausted so gave up! He now sleeps on our beds though 🤦‍♀️ This was not the plan at all. It's like having a baby again though, we did what we could purely to get some sleep.

Crate training is fantastic but takes months of building value in the crate. Our pup slept in one but we literally shut the door on a sleeping puppy then opened it before she realised she was in there. It just prevented her wandering off in the night. She slept with us and we had no sleepless nights. At 9 months she sleeps in it open now (her choice) and sleeps until we get up!

Day time crating is different, takes months and for most owners pretty unnecessary. I do it because we use one camping and also at agility shows and other dog events as I’m a trainer and competitor so it’s worth me training it.

We tried to crate train for a few weeks. He hated every moment and it was soon clear that he was never going to be one of the dogs who saw the crate as their safe place.
We decided to leave the door unlocked one night, see what happened. He was on the bed within two minutes! and a year later he is still there lol!
But we all sleep so much better now, he usually sleeps until 8.30, and after his breakfast he will settle again until 10ish, not bad for a cocker spaniel!

Thank you all for the replies and helpful comments. For example when I do nip to the low he refuses to follow me even though the door is open and I’m saying/actioning him to come with me. He’d rather sit in the living room than poo or wee because he panics. I’ve tried to offer treats to follow but he gets to the hallway then backs out

Does the flooring change? My dog quickly showed as a pup he wasn't keen on certain surfaces especially laminate flooring - they made him quite skittery.
