New puppy!

She is utterly adorable. (Golden Retriever)

9 weeks old (breeder won’t home till 9 weeks), hasn’t had one accident in the house (yet!!) and has taken herself off for naps into her crate.

after my last pup (Labrador) who screamed the house down for the first day and seemed to believe the crate was some type of puppy torture device I’m totally bewildered!

Oh dear god. What a night. I’ve had 45 minutes sleep. The puppy is a demon. A nocturnal demon.

Our adult lab has taken himself upstairs in horror.

its 6am and I have two loads of washing on the line and my house has an odour that I genuinely can’t quite put words too.

she’s also destroyed a house plant, peed on basically everything, I’ve ran out of blankets for her crate.

she’s currently sound asleep in her crate happy as you like. I actually feel like roadkill.

How? how did I forget this? It’s all coming back to me now in a sleep deprived haze.

the second night is always better though yeah? 🙏

This happened to me.a month ago ,I totally forgot the puppy stage he was a monster. He's settled in now but its exhausting god speed op 😄

Woeismeitappears · 27/05/2023 11:38

We just had the most epic 2 hour nap on the sofa together after she had a bath.

it would appear that bathing her wipes her out…. She’s still all sleepy now.

maybe I can bathe her like 8 times a day 😂

pigsDOfly · 27/05/2023 12:41

Aaw bless you. Sounds horrifying. Just keep bathing her. Eight times a day will be fine, although she might get a bit wrinkly. Your sense of humour will pull you through all the terror.

Just keep telling yourself that this too will pass, until she becomes a teenager of course, and then you've got a whole new set of woes.

She is gorgeous though.

Mrsjayy · 27/05/2023 12:45

Mine has been as good as gold the last few days I was beginning to wonder if he was ill 😄 (he isn't)

Mrsjayy · 27/05/2023 12:54

How is your adult dog with him today,?

Woeismeitappears · 27/05/2023 14:10

Absolutley brilliant. They have been playing in the garden in the shade! No accidents in the house again today god knows what tonight will bring 😂

She’s completely adorable……good luck 🐾

CatkinToadflax · 27/05/2023 14:13

We have a 5 month old GR living with us. Can’t say he’s ours because we’re puppy raising him - he actually belongs to Guide Dogs. I showed DH this thread, with your properly funny updates and squishy photos, when we had DPup at the park this morning in the sunshine. We recalled when DPup had been here for two days and we found our adult Labrador and our cat sitting together on a sofa (this <never> happens usually) in a different room, both looking absolutely appalled.

Mrsjayy · 27/05/2023 15:03

Oh my Aunt did the GDP fostering for 10 years they were adorable

clipclop5 · 27/05/2023 15:13

Our girl is now 14 weeks old - she is my 4th golden retriever puppy but first in around 15 years and I definitely forgot how hard it is! It’s been an exhausting 6 weeks if I’m honest but things do seem to be improving. She sleeps right through the night from 11pm - 6am, toilet training almost complete with maybe one accident per day and is picking up basic commands very quickly. Teething/biting also thankfully improving. Some days are better than others! Yesterday she was absolutely wild, so hyper she nearly had me in tears yet today she’s an angel and we’re currently having hugs on the sofa. Being able to take her out for walks has been a game changer and we’re definitely enjoying our time with her a lot more now she’s not just stuck in the house

We had never crate trained before but honestly have found it a godsend, definitely persevere with it. We were very lucky that she took to it with very little bother, cried for about 10/15 mins the first few nights and that’s it. One of the things I think helped were that she had a blanket on her bed with mum + her siblings scent on it and her ‘heartbeat’ toy - a little lamb made specifically for young puppies with a little ticker inside to simulate mums heartbeat, she loved it. You can find them on Amazon x

Woeismeitappears · 27/05/2023 15:19

We had a blanket with mums scent on it. She weed on it so it had to go in the wash so I’ve texted the breeder and I’ve dropped it round today and swapped for a mum scented one.

mm the poor breeder must think I’m utterly bonkers!

We always had a rota for sleeping on the sofa with the puppy. Strangely exH never put himself on it 🤷🏼‍♀️ the dc and I shared the rota until pup & older dog bonded and they began sleeping together- apart from the nightmare first DPup we always had an older dog who could take over parenting duties.

You'll be fine soon 😂

FavouriteDogMug · 27/05/2023 15:30

Haha the update 🤣. Good thing she is so adorable! Hang in there OP she will settle down.

SummerCyclist98 · 27/05/2023 15:40

Arhh bless her they have to look SO cute to get away with the naughtiness. Honestly crate training was The best thing we did she would happily go in and just have naps on schedule like a toddler. My friend didn’t use a crate and had a flipping nightmare first year with their dog. We only kept it until she was nearly two and it naturally fizzled out its use she now ignores her bed mostly in favour of a sofa. The crate was covered by a blanket on 3 sides and the kids weren’t allowed near that room when she was “napping” we had a webcam we could sit n watch her on 😂
I do remember my low point about 20weeks when I had to use the dog pen fence in the kitchen so I could cook - I was in the pen not her- as the only way to stop her jumping on me for attention & food! She’s very food driven.

Anewuser · 27/05/2023 15:48

You’ve committed a crime @Woeismeitappears - we still haven’t been given her name.

She is absolutely gorgeous. I’ve only had two goldens, who both loved running after other people/into their picnics/through the mud. Since then, we’ve always had labs, but I love the look of Golden Retriever puppies.

It will get easier, it’s just you forget those first few weeks of no sleep.

Woeismeitappears · 27/05/2023 15:59

Oops sorry! Her name is Eevee 😃

Mrsjayy · 27/05/2023 16:26

I just left the wee blanket from mum for a bit I know it seems a bit manky but it settled him it was just a little bit of wee. I've washed it now though and there is no lingering smells .

Mrsjayy · 27/05/2023 16:31

@clipclop5 you are doing a great thing. I was speaking to my uncle recently their last pup has just retired and lives with their person and new guide dog.

Woeismeitappears · 28/05/2023 00:28

Night 2.

we have had 15 minutes of screaming like a banshee but all is now suspiciously quiet.

I don’t trust the quiet. She’s Absolutley digging a hole out of the crate to shit on my sofa.

OP posts:
PuppyMonkey · 28/05/2023 06:59

Hang in there OP.

pookiedoodlepuppy · 28/05/2023 07:16

Ha ha we have the digging in the crate before she falls asleep .

Sunny06 · 28/05/2023 07:30

I feel your pain OP. I have just had two nights of hell trying to crate train my 8 week old cocker spaniel

UnnamedPoster · 28/05/2023 07:32

Congratulations OP, she's beautiful!
Our Golden is 18 months now, and I have to say, he's been pretty damn perfect that whole time - so it does happen!
DH slept on the floor downstairs with him for the first 10 days, gradually moving his bed back a few metres each night. This kept pup really settled and meant the trip to his crate to wake him up for the nighttime wee was easy!

It also meant I got a full night's sleep every night (thank you DH!!!) and could then take the daytime shift while he napped if needed.

Goldies are the best ❤️
Good luck and feel free to keep posting updates of your gorgeous fur ball!

(P.S we found bull's pizzle to be a brilliant chew for anytime he needed to be calm)
