Is my house just destined to stink?

Got a Patterdale and he's lush. But makes my house smell
He rolls in fox poo at every opportunity and is bathed each time he does this.
I smell him and still get that biscuit puppy head smell but the house stinks. I notice it if we go away then come back or if I go into say the kitchen and then back to lounge. We have carpet in the lounge which we wash regularly and fabric sofas I scrub with biological wash liquid but it still honks to me.
Is this it forever ? Friends with curly/ poo dogs don't have smelly houses to me.
Windows opened regularly and all blankets/ cushions washed weekly.
Any tips? Other than get him a perm and hope it changes his pong?! 🤣

Is he on good quality food?

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 08/05/2023 20:02

Some breeds just smell more doggy than others! Has he got Labrador type fur? They tend to smell a bit more - I thinks it’s just their natural oils and waterproofing etc. Ddog hair isn’t like that. It’s more fluff than hair. He can smell a bit doggie if he’s gone a few months without a bath. He only gets one when he needs one. However, that’s usually pretty frequent as he too is a lover of stinky fox poo! He does where an anorak in the cooler months and so we avoid the worst of it though. Usually manages to slather it on his neck and ears though. Don’t you just love em 🙂🐾

Food could be another thread. He's on butchers grainfree wet and was on Iams and now trying Tails - I may now need another threads on his tummy as Dh just got back from walk said he's had slimy poo with blood and sat down and wouldn't walk when they went out 😩. He has been on butternut but went off it, raw but only ate one flavour, butchers has lasted the longest.
Tried Wolfworthy and he loved the sample but wouldn't touch the full bag !

One of mine smells doggy, the other doesn’t. Same breed and good quality feed.

It sounds like the food is too rich for him I had this with my pug and end up having to put her on royal canine it's the only food she will eat and no runny tummy with blood have u tried bathing him and then blow drying with it on low heat I find it works best so u don't get the damp dog smell x

PoorlyDS · 08/05/2023 20:17

@kirsty2023 yes ! I find it better if he lets me dry him but he's a beggar for running off. I have a dressing gown thing that helps dry him faster but maybe it's the carpet? Rug?

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 08/05/2023 20:35

Have you checked him at the vet for allergies?

Blood in his poo could be colitis which can be caused by foods being too rich, or an intolerance. Changing food a lot won't help with his digestion either.

PoorlyDS · 08/05/2023 20:39

@coffeecupsandwaxmelts he had a check up not so long since but not allergy related. I'll dial food back to bland for a few days and see if that helps
He's had scrambled egg with charcoal liquid in it in case he's eaten anything gross i haven't seen
He's on my lap now snoozing

My pug is the same she runs off and always ends up coming back lol I have to bath my pug at least 2 a month as she likes to get muddy and dirty what shampoo do u use? X

JamSandle · 08/05/2023 20:39

It's the only thing that puts me off getting my own. The smell (and drool!)

Bless him, definitely get him checked over - I know a few dogs who've smelt bad and a change in diet has worked wonders.

Chicken is a common allergen unfortunately and it seems to be in everything which doesn't help!

Fenellapitstop · 08/05/2023 20:40

Do you put ketchup on the poop before you bath him. It neutralises the smell. Bicarb on the rugs and carpets for an hour before hoovering helps too

kirsty2023 · 08/05/2023 20:42

@PoorlyDS try this shampoo I find it works well and double shampoo him x

Someone in the dog park just recommended that Bugalugs to me, my lab is a smelly poo-roller too. She is hardly ever bathed, as she swims all the time I don’t want to wash the natural oils out of her coat. I don’t think our house smells but it’s quite airy, hard floors and we hoover daily. She’s not allowed on the sofas. She’s been on Wellbeloved kibble since the day she came to us, and she’s in great condition, perfect energy and behaviour, never a bad poo unless she has stolen a sausage or eaten a sheep poo or whatever and never, ever seen blood. Are you feeding your dog too many different rich things?

DogDream · 08/05/2023 20:51

raw but only ate one flavour

He’s had an awful lot of food changes, that won’t be helping his digestion. It’s absolutely fine for him to only eat one flavour of raw; if he had a big bag of kibble it would only be one flavour.

I’d stick with something with incredibly simple ingredients (like raw or cold pressed) so that you can try an elimination diet for allergies. Start with fish (Fish4Dogs are a good brand) as chicken is a common allergen for dogs and in almost everything.

Newpeep · 08/05/2023 21:54

I have found what you feed makes a huge difference to how they smell. James wellbeloved has always made mine really greasy for example. Both dogs I’ve had.

This is over about a year and a half He was on butternut for first 18 months without issue bless him.
Apparently he was given loads of bacon and sausages at camping yesterday when I wasn't there. Could be that ?

We have a patterdale x and he used to love rolling and is now trained not to . Back in the day I always bathed him in tea tree foaming wash and found that was the only stuff that got rid of the smell of fox poo .

How did you train not to roll? His eyes seem to glaze over in ecstasy when he finds a patch ?!!

Yes, I suspect you have your reason - they're not good for dogs as they're so high in fat and salt, and a dogs' tolerance for stuff like that is much lower than ours.

I'd honestly avoid giving him stuff like that in the future - it's not just an upset stomach you need to worry about, it's things like pancreatitis too.

Azealeasinbloom · 09/05/2023 07:44

Blood in stool is a worry. Does he pass mucous with the stool ? If so it could be an intolerance.

You could try Royal Canin Hypoallergenic hydrolysed for 3 months and nothing else ( and I really do mean nothing). If that settles him, then you could gradually add other things , one at a time, to see how he goes. Or just leave him on it.
I have one of my dogs on it for diagnosed intolerance and she is fine unless she eats something outside a narrow range, or if random strangers feed her crap on a walk 🤬 But that’s a different thread.

BanditsOnTheHorizon · 09/05/2023 07:54

We've got 4 dogs, terriers and a hound. Get wooden or tiled floors downstairs, much easier to wash, also get a good air purifier, I spent nearly £200 and it's worth it's weight in gold, covers for the sofas, blankets will do, and wash a couple of times a week. It's the dander that smells, the fine hair you can't really see. I Hoover most days, wash the floors a couple of times a week and wash the blankets twice a week. That with the air purifier seems to keep the smell at bay. At least until one rolls in poo or it's a wet day. We wash ours with baby shampoo which we've found is much better (and cheaper) than dog shampoo.

Might also be worth a trip to the vets, I saw a program where a dog stunk and it turned out it had an ear infection. No outward signs to point at it. Do a sniff test to see if he smells in a specific area. Also anal glands honk so smell his back at the base of his tail.
