Anyone awake? I'm up with our epileptic dog.

He had quite a bad seizure at around 5pm and he's recovered fine but is now so so restless. This is normal I know but it's exhausting and I can't do anything to help him.

Anyone around for a chat? Doggy or otherwise!

How is he now OP? Hand hold for you. It's so horrible when you feel powerless to help them

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 22/04/2023 04:08

Thank you, he's actually OK, just super restless. Keeps wanting to go outside but doesn't do anything. He also just stares at me, I wish I knew what he wanted. He must be so tired, I know I am!

He's currently laying on his bed so hoping he'll go to sleep soon.

powershowerforanhour · 22/04/2023 04:14

Tough night. Would a diazepam help knock him off to sleep if you have any?

Gofaster2023 · 22/04/2023 04:15

Try to get some rest. He'll no doubt be fine tomorrow and won't understand why you're tired and not wanting to go for a super long walk! I'm glad he's feeling better.

Fraaahnces · 22/04/2023 04:31

How old is your doggie @GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat? Does he have many seizures? Does he have them often?

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 22/04/2023 04:44

So we give him rectal diazapam to stop the seizures but whilst it made him sleepy when he was a pup, these days it doesn't have the same effect. We just think he constantly feels like he needs a poo afterwards. He wants company and reassurance but moves away if I touch him.

OP posts:
GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 22/04/2023 04:45

He's 2 and a half and had epilepsy since 4 months.

OP posts:
GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 22/04/2023 04:47

He has roughly 1 or 2 per month. He has good periods and less good. He seems to be worse in spring and autumn for some reason.

Poor boyo… he’s so lucky to have you. Or rather you’re lucky to have each other

Toddlerteaplease · 22/04/2023 06:04

I took diazepam a couple of times and I felt very restless and spaced out. Relaxing, it was not. I felt awful. So maybe your dog feels the same!

villainousbroodmare · 22/04/2023 16:44

You can give the diazepam intranasally instead of rectally. Just cover his eyes and squirt it up his nose. Better absorption too.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 22/04/2023 17:01

Sadly there's no way we'd get near his face, he chomps and thrashes too much.

OP posts:
villainousbroodmare · 22/04/2023 17:29

Understood. Ask your vet about midazolam instead. Diazepam makes younger animals nicely dozy but not so much older animals, especially when agitated.

Thank you, how is this administered, do you know?

Sending you and your dog lots of good wishes.
I have an epileptic dog - he developed epilepsy about 2 yrs ago when he was 4 and a half (ish). He typically has 3-4 seizures a day for 3 days and then nothing for 7-8 weeks (fingers crossed). Whilst the seizures are very distressing for me, I find the post-seizure phase most difficult when he is wandering around confused and very clumsy, bumping into things etc. I agree it is exhausting. He also then wees or messes in the house and doesn’t seem to know he’s doing it.
I was given diazepam to administer rectally if needed but fortunately the seizures are fairly short (1-2 mins max) so not needed to use it.
Agree with not getting anywhere need the teeth end!

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 22/04/2023 19:56

Thank you, it is extremely difficult, they just don't deserve it do they?

We are fortunate in some ways that his often happen outside so we have a routine of getting his lead on, giving the diazapam and then letting him gather himself before bringing him in. Any mess is then usually outside. He's often still blind and deaf but running around so crashes in to things often at full pelt and if we're on a walk it's even more dangerous.

PugInTheHouse · 22/04/2023 20:08

Aw sorry to hear things are tough. I remember you messaging when he was diagnosed as we were on the puppy thread together, so upsetting. My pup lost his eye due to a detached retina in Jan (can't remember if we've spoken since that happened) and it's so tough feeling helpless isn't it.

Sending lots of love your way.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 22/04/2023 21:11

Thank you @PugInTheHouse . We're certainly in a much better place than we were back then, last night was tough though.

So sorry about your doggo too Sad They really are part of the family and dog ownership is so much more emotional than I predicted. I find it very hard to look back at photos and videos of him before we knew, our innocence hurts to see.

Yes they really are, I don't think I have ever cried as much as I did. I still struggle to see pictures before, and now and then I catch sight of him and it really upsets me. I am in constant worry of him hurting the other one.

They do bring so much joy also though. I'm not sure I could have another dog to be honest. I have my 2 and I have ages 10 years in this last 2 years I think 🙈

I’m afraid I don’t have any advice but you sound like such a lovely and attentive family, he is lucky to have you all.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 22/04/2023 21:43

No sadly I think he will be our only dog. I don't wish we didn't have him as he brings so so much love and happiness to our family but the worry and stress is unbelievable. Not to mention the cost!

I remember being in awe of you when I heard you'd got a second dog! Was that always your plan?

Thank you that's very kind. He's truly the sweetest dog and I feel so sad for him that he's been dealt such a cruel hand.

Yes would never be without them now if course and I miss them loads if we're away.

Noooooo, definitely not the plan. Just never ever go and visit 3 week old puppies if you don't want another dog 🙈

He's a huge smiley goofball, he's about 45kg at 13 months, he has to be put in with the small dogs at daycare as he's scared of the big ones 😂 The pug is 10kg (chunky boy!)
