Little update on the rescue corgi

He's doing very well overall, but has definitely a) entered his second puppyhood or b) is now completing his first one, as we are not entirely sure how old he is. He might not be 2 yet. He's getting more dark fur, and sometimes their coats change colour when they're not completely mature yet. Anything left accessible to him he will chew (this is on us, of course: just have to treat him like a puppy in this regard, that if we leave something down, its getting chewed to pieces). His recall is improving, but actually, he's pretty happy on the long lead. We had some advice from a trainer that a collar is better than a harness because the harness can give confusing signals, and this has proved to be correct. He is happier in a collar.

He's still incredibly long and l a n k y. I call him the Long Ness Monster. I've been looking at pictures of Cardigans online, and whilst some are pretty long, I haven't seen any quite as lanky as this boy. Unlike our Pembroke, who gets fat if she inhales 1 gram of excess food, its quite a challenge to keep any weight on him. He needs a lot of food just to maintain, and he's not that interested in food. But he's young, and I think its better for such a long boy to be on the leaner side for the sake of his back.

He looks like a Fox! Especially with his bushy little tail Wink

iloveeverykindofcat · 17/04/2023 09:48

His first nickname was The Scraggly Fox. When he was thinner with less fur right out of the shelter he really looked like one

He's gorgeous. I think cardigans are know as "yard dogs" because they are meant to be a yard from nose to tail. Like you I keep mine on the lean side because of his back. My cardigan lies flat out just like yours.
They are the best dogs.

Luckycat1 · 17/04/2023 12:40

He really does look like a fox in that lying down picture 😍

Pixiedust1234 · 17/04/2023 12:56

I never saw your previous thread but what a lovely update. Your second picture of him flat out, surrounded by lots of toys is just chefs kiss 😍

MrsCarson · 17/04/2023 13:09

He's so cute, what's his name. Change it to Fox Mulder

iloveeverykindofcat · 17/04/2023 13:59

His name is Mab. He's a very good boy. A bit, um, wild. But there's absolutely no aggression or malice in him, despite the fact he was abused. Its a bit like living with a large, strong, enthusiastic toddler.

Oh love him! What's the back story?

You must do this! Grin

Well, he was picked up by the RSPCA and sent to Dog's Trust, where we got him. They're not entirely sure but he is mostly likely a failed stud dog that was dumped or escaped (he wasn't neutered and was found with a female). He was very malnourished and lacked muscle in his legs suggesting he'd been kept in a shed or chained up. He was afraid of boots and hands and showed clear signs he'd been hit. But he's almost forgotten that now. He's very game and has a happy personality. His absolute favourite thing is mad playing, preferably with other dogs but toys will do. In person he's a surprisingly big dog, much much bigger than the Pembroke.

Cardigan corgis have never had docked tails. Pembroke's (which the queen had) I believe can be born with a naturally occurring short stumpy tail or before docking was made illegal were docked.

ilovesushi · 17/04/2023 22:17

He is beautiful! I love foxy dogs.

iloveeverykindofcat · 18/04/2023 04:57

Our Pembroke has a tail too! But the Pems my parents had when I was a child used to come with their tails docked. Shame as their tails are so expressive.

He's looking bonnier and happier every time you update! Very happy for you both. DaffodilDaffodilDaffodilSmile

He's a good lad. We went to the vet to pick up wormer and he went full charm offensive, wagging and play-bowing and weaving around. Last time he was at the vets he showed fear aggression. They loved him! People still say he's skinny but the vet said he's spot on, lean and muscular, people are just used to seeing fat corgis.

He sounds like a complete charmer! 😍

lljkk · 27/04/2023 07:38

Such a pretty boy.

iloveeverykindofcat · 27/04/2023 07:43

I think his fundamental personality is happy and clownish. He's still got a little edge of fear aggression from being abused, but we're learning together. With a dog with good dog manners, he's great. If another dog startles him though, he's reactive. Which I suppose is perfectly understandable.

He is beautiful

I have a basset hound and we often get told he is skinny but vet like you says he is spot on. I think people with some breeds like Corgi and Basset Hounds have become used to them being overweight.

I do love a good update.

YnyshirGal · 27/04/2023 08:08

He is gorgeous! 😍

We also have a long bodied rescue corgi and often joke she looks like a fox that has wandered in from the garden 😂

She’s just turned one - pics below

She is lovely. Is that a Pem with a tail?

OP posts:
YnyshirGal · 28/04/2023 00:01

Yep, she’s purebred Pem (allegedly) and was dumped with 3 siblings at a rescue at 5 weeks old as they had Giardia and the “breeder” didn’t want to pay for the vet treatment in case they didn’t survive and it would be wasted money!!

Skinny long body and fox tail:

I have fallen in love with corgis following this thread! 😍

iloveeverykindofcat · 28/04/2023 05:28

Poor girl! We also have an ex-breeding Pem, she wasn't dumped, but her life with the breeder wasn't good. It wasn't the sort of operation you could report to the RSPCA - he fed and walked his dogs, gave them appropriate housing, and took them to the vet as needed - but it was very much a business operation and he didn't care about the dogs. He had two popular breeds on the go and bred the females as often as he could get away with. I think she spent a lot of time crated. She'd had 3 pregnancies by the time she was 4, which is frankly pushing the limit, and once he realized she was a bad investment (2 c-sections) he sold her off. We've been delaying her spay because she'd been through so much surgery and the vet wanted us to slim her a bit first, but she's booked in for early May now.

@ilovesushi They're great dogs. As you can see by my username, I'm a big cat lover, but I do love a corgi. A lot of dog in a compact package. Unfortunately their recent popularity has led to overbreeding and the mistaken impression they're just soft cute coach potatoes. Not at all! They're smart, athletic herding dogs, just on short legs.
